InactiveSet Protocol Review 2026: Deprecated Tokenized Portfolios
Set Protocol packaged baskets of crypto assets into single ERC-20 tokens on Ethereum. Its developer has announced that V2 and the TokenSets interface are no longer under development, so treat it as a legacy system.

Our verdict on Set Protocol
4.5/10Set Protocol is a well-known early example of on-chain index tokens, turning baskets of WBTC, WETH, DAI and other assets into single ERC-20s. It suits readers studying how tokenized portfolios work or those who already hold Set tokens. The main caveat is that Set Labs has ended development of V2 and the TokenSets interface, so there is no active team support, and newcomers should look at maintained alternatives instead.

What is Set Protocol?
Set Protocol is a set of smart contracts on Ethereum, built by Set Labs, that lets a portfolio be represented by a single ERC-20 token. Its best-known interface, TokenSets, let users hold baskets of crypto assets in a way often compared to ETFs. Set Labs raised $14 million in May 2021 to expand the product.
The key fact for 2026 is that Set Labs announced neither Set Protocol V2 nor the TokenSets interface will continue under development. The contracts remain on Ethereum, and DefiLlama still shows about $12.2 million in total value locked, but active support from the original team has ended.
That makes this a legacy system. It remains useful for understanding how on-chain index tokens work and how later index projects built on Set V2, but it is not a product to adopt without checking who maintains the specific Set you would use.
How Set Protocol works
Set Protocol uses smart contracts on Ethereum to hold a basket of tokens and issue one ERC-20 token that represents a share of that basket. If you own the Set token, you own a proportional claim on the assets inside it. The assets can include Bitcoin as WBTC, Ethereum as WETH and fiat-pegged coins such as DAI.
Strategies are encoded in the contracts. A thematic Set tracks a single theme, while leveraged and yield-bearing Sets apply borrowing or yield sources. ETH is converted to WETH on deposit because plain ETH does not conform to the ERC-20 standard.
Set V2 extended this with multi-asset support and a modular design that turns asset management strategies into ERC-20 tokens. Set Labs has since announced that V2 and the TokenSets interface are no longer under development, so the contracts exist without active upkeep from the original team.

Key features
01
Tokenized portfolios
A Set is an ERC-20 token that represents a basket of underlying assets such as WBTC, WETH and DAI, so one token gives exposure to a whole portfolio.
02
Full collateralization
Each Set is described as fully collateralized, with the underlying assets held in its contracts rather than promised by an issuer.
03
Multi-asset strategies
Set V2 supports multiple assets in one Set and lets strategies be translated into ERC-20 tokens, according to third-party write-ups.
04
Several Set categories
Sets were grouped into thematic, leveraged, yield-bearing and uncategorized types, covering simple baskets and more complex strategies.
05
Automated management
The protocol was designed so that rebalancing and strategy logic run through smart contracts instead of a manual fund manager.
06
ERC-20 composability
Because Sets are standard ERC-20 tokens, they can in principle be held in common Ethereum wallets and used with other contracts.
Pros and cons
What we like
- Clear idea: one ERC-20 token represents a fully collateralized basket of assets
- Supports thematic, leveraged and yield-bearing strategies
- Runs on Ethereum with standard tokens, so it fits common wallets
- Two audits are listed in the DefiLlama data
- Still holds roughly $12.2 million in TVL, so the contracts are not empty
Watch out for
- Set Labs has said neither Set Protocol V2 nor the TokenSets interface will continue to be developed
- No active front end from the original team means users must interact with contracts through third parties
- Strategies rely on smart contracts, so bugs or oracle and liquidity problems can cause losses
- Leveraged and yield-bearing Sets add extra risk beyond simple price movement
- Fees, team details and current governance are not published
- Deposits of ETH are wrapped into WETH, which adds a step that newcomers may not expect
Set Protocol fees
Fees are not published. Fee settings on Set-based products were defined per Set, so any management or streaming fee would appear in the details of that specific Set.
Users would also pay Ethereum network gas when minting, redeeming or trading Set tokens. Because the original TokenSets interface is no longer being developed, anyone using the contracts should check fee parameters directly on-chain.
Is Set Protocol safe?
Two audits are listed for the protocol, but the audit firms and dates are not given. Audits reduce but do not remove smart-contract risk, and the code is no longer being developed by Set Labs, so newly found issues may not receive an official fix.
Sets are non-custodial in the sense that assets sit in smart contracts, but users still face contract, oracle and market risk, and leveraged or yield-bearing Sets can lose value faster. The project does not publish regulatory status, and no insurance or investor protection applies. Check the current status of any specific Set before depositing.
6 steps
How to get started with Set Protocol
- 1
Confirm whether the Set you are considering is still maintained, since the original developer has ended work on V2 and TokenSets.
- 2
Read the Set's composition, strategy type and fee settings before depositing anything.
- 3
Use a self-custody Ethereum wallet and keep ETH for gas.
- 4
Check whether the Set accepts ETH directly or requires wrapped WETH.
- 5
Start with a small amount and note how to redeem the token back into underlying assets.
- 6
Review contract addresses and audit reports from official documentation before approving any token spend.
Who Set Protocol is for
Set Protocol suits people researching the history of on-chain index products and existing holders of Set tokens who need to understand what they own. It is a poor fit for newcomers who want a supported, actively maintained interface for portfolio exposure.
Set Protocol FAQs
What is Set Protocol?
Set Protocol is a system of smart contracts on Ethereum, built by Set Labs, that turns a portfolio or trading strategy into a single ERC-20 token. Holders own a share of the underlying assets held by that token.
Is Set Protocol still active?
Set Labs announced that neither Set Protocol V2 nor the TokenSets user interface will continue under development by the company. Existing contracts remain on Ethereum, but active upkeep from the original team should not be expected.
What kinds of Sets existed?
Public reporting describes thematic Sets built around a single theme, plus leveraged, yield-bearing and uncategorized groups. Examples of underlying assets include WBTC, WETH and DAI.
Is a Set token backed by real assets?
Set tokens are described as fully collateralized, meaning the underlying assets sit in the Set's contracts. They are still exposed to market moves, smart-contract bugs and the risks of any strategy the Set follows.
Does Set Protocol have a token?
The project lists no token of its own. Governance and token incentives were handled elsewhere, for example by projects that built on Set V2.
How is it different from an ETF?
Set Protocol was often compared to ETFs because it bundles several tokens into one tradable token. Unlike an ETF, it runs on public smart contracts, has no regulated custodian and offers no investor protections.
