MultiversX, formerly known as Elrond, is a layer 1 blockchain that relies on adaptive state sharding. The network, transaction processing and state are all split into shards that work in parallel, rather than every node handling everything. Consensus is Secure Proof of Stake, where validators are chosen to propose and validate blocks. The project describes a network of more than 3,200 nodes. It is not EVM-based and uses its own virtual machine for smart contracts, so apps are built with MultiversX tooling rather than copied over from Ethereum.
The native token is EGLD. It pays transaction fees, is staked to help secure the network and earn rewards, and is the base asset in most of the chain's DeFi apps. Fees are paid in EGLD and are generally low. Exact costs can change with network conditions and the EGLD price, so check the current figure in your wallet before sending a transaction. DeFi TVL on the chain was about $12.1M at the time of writing, a modest figure.
The ecosystem is small but focused on DeFi basics. Hatom Lending, Hatom Liquid Staking and Hatom TAO Liquid Staking form a lending and staking suite. xExchange, AshSwap, OneDex and DX25 cover trading, with AshPerp offering perpetual futures. XOXNO Liquid Staking provides another liquid staking token for EGLD. Outside DeFi, Xportal is the main wallet and super app, PeerMe supports DAOs, and Equistar and Cyberpunk City represent gaming. Centralized exchanges such as Bitget and Gate also appear here because they support EGLD, though they do not run on the chain.

Frequently asked questions
What is MultiversX?
MultiversX is a public smart contract blockchain, formerly called Elrond, built around sharding so that transactions are spread across parallel groups of validators. Its native token is EGLD. Developers use it for DeFi, tokens, NFTs, games and payment apps.
Is MultiversX EVM compatible?
No. MultiversX runs its own virtual machine rather than the Ethereum Virtual Machine, so Solidity contracts do not deploy there without changes. Ethereum-style wallets and apps also need MultiversX-specific tools, such as the xPortal wallet.
What is EGLD used for?
EGLD is the native token. It is used to pay network fees, to stake with validators and to take part in the chain's DeFi apps. Holders can also stake it through liquid staking protocols such as Hatom Liquid Staking and XOXNO Liquid Staking, which issue receipt tokens like sEGLD and xEGLD.
Which are the main DeFi apps on MultiversX?
Popular choices include xExchange, the DEX from the chain's own team, as well as AshSwap and OneDex. Hatom Lending covers borrowing and lending. Liquidity is thin on the smaller venues, so check pool depth before trading and expect more price slippage on large orders.
How big is the MultiversX DeFi ecosystem?
The total was about $12.1M at the time of writing, which is small next to the large smart contract chains. Hatom Lending, xExchange and Hatom Liquid Staking hold most of it. Small TVL generally means less liquidity and higher risk on lesser-used protocols.
Why are exchanges like Bitget and Gate listed on this page?
Bitget and Gate are centralized exchanges that support many networks, and EGLD can be traded or moved through them. They do not run on MultiversX smart contracts. Their large TVL figures come from reserves across many chains and say little about MultiversX activity.
What is the largest dApp on MultiversX by TVL?
Bitget is the largest dApp on MultiversX by total value locked, with $5.93B across all the chains it supports. It is followed by Gate ($5.91B) and Hatom Lending ($6.80M). TVL figures come from DefiLlama and change daily.
Which dApp on MultiversX has the highest DappsAtlas score?
Gate has the highest score at 7.7/10, ahead of Bitget (7.6) and Hatom Lending (7.0). Scores weigh security, ease of use, fees and features, and are based only on facts we could verify.
How many dApps are on MultiversX?
DappsAtlas tracks 29 dApps on MultiversX. Of these, 29 have a full review and 17 report value locked, $11.9B in total, counting value on every chain they support.
What are the most common types of dApps on MultiversX?
DEXes (6), Staking (4) and Centralized Exchanges (3) are the largest categories on MultiversX, by number of projects.
Which dApps on MultiversX grew the most this week?
Among dApps with at least $1M locked, Bitget had the biggest 7-day TVL gain (+1.6%) and Hatom Liquid Staking the biggest drop (−3.9%). Combined TVL moved −0.5% over the same seven days.
What is the average score for dApps on MultiversX?
The 25 rated dApps on MultiversX average 5.8 out of 10. Of these, 0 score 8 or higher and 5 score below 5.
