What Frax USD is
Frax USD (FRXUSD) is a US dollar stablecoin issued by the Frax Finance protocol. It is meant to trade at about one dollar and is described as fiat-redeemable and fully collateralized. It was introduced in early 2025 as a rebrand of the earlier FRAX stablecoin, which had used a different, partly algorithmic design in its history.
According to the project description, the model is hybrid. Governance-approved custodians, which the project calls enshrined custodians, mint and redeem frxUSD against reserves of cash-equivalent assets. Onchain mechanisms built by the protocol then handle stability and usability across decentralized finance. Public coverage of the January 2025 launch linked the reserves to tokenized US Treasury funds, including a product tied to BlackRock and Securitize.
The Frax DAO governs the protocol. Reporting on the issuer profile says it delegated issuer compliance and collateral management for frxUSD to Frax Inc under a governance proposal numbered FIP-432. In practice this means the token combines onchain governance with a regulated-style off-chain redemption path, so it is not a purely decentralized asset.
What the token is used for
The main purpose of frxUSD is to hold and move dollar value onchain. People use it as a trading pair, a store of value that tracks the dollar, and a building block in lending, liquidity pools and payments across many networks.
Within the Frax ecosystem, frxUSD can be deployed to earn yield. The best-known route is staked Frax USD (sfrxUSD), a yield-bearing version built as an ERC-4626 vault token. It can be redeemed for frxUSD at a rate that rises over time. Frax describes sfrxUSD as having an onchain balance sheet and a yield floor tied to Treasury rates, though yields can change and are not guaranteed.
The project also promotes white-label stablecoins, where businesses and platforms launch their own branded stablecoin using frxUSD as the underlying backing asset. That is a product offering rather than something every holder uses directly.
For ordinary holders, frxUSD is mostly a dollar-denominated balance that can be sent between wallets, swapped on decentralized exchanges or used as collateral where it is supported.
Supply and tokenomics
Frax USD has no fixed maximum supply, because stablecoin supply expands and contracts with demand. New tokens are minted when users deposit eligible assets with approved custodians and are removed when users redeem for dollars.
As of 2026-11-05, the circulating supply was about 97.8 million tokens, with a similar total supply, giving a market capitalization of roughly $97.8 million. The fully diluted value matched that figure, as expected for a token with no separate vesting schedule. Its market cap rank was around 277, with about $3.3 million in 24-hour trading volume.
The price was about $1.00. Over its recorded history the data shows a low of about $0.976 in February 2025 and a high of about $1.088 in April 2026. Brief deviations like these are normal for stablecoins on thinner markets, and they do not by themselves indicate a lasting break from the peg.
Unlike many crypto assets, frxUSD has no inflationary emission schedule or team allocation. Its value depends on the quality and accessibility of reserves, not on token scarcity.
Chains and how it is held or traded
frxUSD is issued on a very large number of networks. The list includes Ethereum, Solana, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, BNB Chain, Avalanche, Aptos, Linea, Scroll, zkSync Era, Sonic, Berachain, Blast, Sei, Fraxtal and many others. It is not the native gas token of any chain.
Most holders keep it in a self-custody wallet that supports the network they use, and then trade it on decentralized exchanges or move it through bridges and cross-chain messaging tools. It may also be listed on some centralized exchanges, though availability varies by region and platform.
Because the same token exists on many chains, check which network you are on before sending funds. Sending to the wrong network, or to an address that does not support it, can result in permanent loss. Always confirm the contract address from an official source before swapping, since fake tokens with similar names are common.
Direct minting and redemption through custodians generally involves onboarding and identity checks, so most people acquire frxUSD on the secondary market instead.
History and notable events
Frax began as a stablecoin with an algorithmic component, in which part of the supply was backed by collateral and part by a governance token. Over time the protocol moved toward fuller collateralization and a broader set of products, including its own Ethereum layer 2, Fraxtal, which appears in the list of chains above.
In January 2025, the protocol launched frxUSD as the renamed successor to FRAX, with direct fiat redemption and stronger compliance features. Coverage at the time highlighted reserves backed by a tokenized Treasury fund product. Later in 2025, Frax promoted white-label stablecoins built on frxUSD.
The data shows the price touched about $0.976 in February 2025, around the transition period, and reached its highest recorded level of about $1.088 in April 2026. The launch date of the token itself is not given in the data beyond the early 2025 coverage, so treat exact dates as something to verify with official announcements.
Risks to understand
The key risk for any stablecoin is whether it holds its peg. frxUSD depends on the reserves held by its custodians and on the ability to redeem. If reserve assets lose value, become hard to access, or a custodian fails, the token could trade below one dollar.
Counterparty and regulatory risk is higher than for fully decentralized tokens. Redemption relies on approved custodians and compliance processes, and issuer responsibilities sit with a company under a DAO decision. Rule changes or enforcement could affect who can mint or redeem.
Smart contract risk applies to the token on every chain, to bridges that move it, and especially to yield products such as sfrxUSD. Yield is not a guaranteed return, and it depends on underlying rates and protocol design. Liquidity can also be thin on smaller chains, which makes larger trades more costly.
Finally, a market capitalization near $98 million is modest next to the largest stablecoins, so liquidity and adoption are smaller. None of this is advice to buy or sell, and readers should do their own research.
How to store it safely
Use a reputable self-custody wallet, ideally a hardware wallet for larger amounts, and keep the recovery phrase offline on paper or metal, never in photos, cloud notes or messages. Anyone who has the phrase controls the funds.
Before sending, double-check the network and the token contract address, and send a small test amount first. Be careful with approvals: when you use a decentralized app, you often grant it permission to spend your tokens, so review and revoke approvals you no longer need.
If you move frxUSD across chains, use well-known bridges and understand that bridged versions add smart contract risk. Avoid links in unsolicited messages, because phishing sites imitating stablecoin and yield products are common.
Keep a little of each chain's native gas token in the wallet so you can move or sell your frxUSD when needed. If you hold sfrxUSD for yield, remember it is a separate token with its own risks, not the same as plain frxUSD.
By the numbers
Frax USD in numbers
Frax USD (FRXUSD) is ranked #281 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $95.0M and a price of $1.00 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($95.0M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.
The price was down 0.0% over 7 days, up 0.0% over 30 days, up 0.0% over the past year. It trades about 8% below its all-time high of $1.09, set on Apr 12, 2026.
About 94.96M FRXUSD are in circulation. No hard maximum supply is listed, so new tokens can still be issued.
24-hour trading volume was about $11.4M, or 12% of its market cap: high turnover.
FRXUSD has token contracts on 28 chains we track, including Ethereum, Mode, Unichain, Blast. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.
CoinGecko groups FRXUSD under Stablecoins.
