What Aerodrome Finance is
Aerodrome Finance is a decentralized exchange on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network. It is an automated market maker (AMM): instead of matching buyers and sellers in an order book, it lets people swap tokens against pools of assets that other users have deposited. Those depositors are called liquidity providers.
The project describes itself as a central liquidity hub for Base. It combines three parts: an incentive engine that pays rewards to liquidity providers, a vote-lock governance system, and a swap interface for ordinary traders. Its design is inherited from Velodrome V2, a similar protocol on the Optimism network, so the mechanics will look familiar to anyone who has used that system.
AERO is the protocol's token. It is issued on Base and is not the native gas token of any chain. On Base, fees are paid in ETH, not AERO. As of 2026-11-05, AERO ranked around 150th by market capitalization on public data aggregators, which places it in the mid-sized range of crypto assets. Some recent sources shorten the project name to Aero, but the token and its symbol are the same.
What the AERO token is used for
AERO has two roles that are closely linked. The first is as a reward. The protocol distributes newly issued AERO, called emissions, to liquidity providers who deposit assets into approved pools. The aim is to attract enough liquidity that trades on Base get good prices with little slippage.
The second role is governance. Holders can lock AERO for a chosen period to receive veAERO, a vote-escrowed position held as an NFT. The longer the lock, the more voting power it carries. veAERO holders vote each week on which pools receive that week's emissions. In return, voters have a claim on the trading fees from the pools they vote for, along with any extra incentives that projects add to attract votes.
In practice, this creates a market for votes. Teams that want deep liquidity for their own token can offer incentives to veAERO voters, who then direct emissions toward those pools. The liquid AERO token can still be bought, sold, and used in pools, while veAERO is the locked, voting form. Locked positions are not freely tradable as ordinary tokens in the same way.
Supply and tokenomics
Figures here are approximate and change often. As of 2026-11-05, about 358.8 million AERO were circulating, while the total supply was about 2.01 billion. The data lists no fixed maximum supply, so the total should not be treated as a hard cap.
The gap between circulating and total supply matters for valuation. At a price of about $0.65, the circulating market capitalization was roughly $231.7 million, while the fully diluted valuation, which counts the whole total supply, was about $1.30 billion. Daily trading volume was about $29.1 million at the time of writing.
Because emissions are the main way new AERO reaches the market, the token supply grows over time. Emissions follow a schedule set in the protocol's design, and the rate can be adjusted through its rules. Holders who lock AERO as veAERO generally receive extra tokens intended to offset some of that dilution, but I could not confirm the exact current schedule from the public information available, so check the project's documentation for current emission rates and any team or investor allocations before drawing conclusions.
Chains, holding and trading
AERO is issued on Base, and that is where the protocol and its liquidity pools operate. It follows the ERC-20 token standard, so any wallet that supports Base can hold it. Base is built on the Ethereum technology stack, which means addresses look the same as Ethereum addresses.
The main place to trade AERO is Aerodrome itself, where you can swap it against other Base tokens such as ETH or stablecoins. It is also listed on centralized exchanges, and public reporting shows it can be bought through Coinbase in the United States. Availability varies by country and by platform, so check what your exchange supports.
To use the protocol directly, you connect a self-custody wallet to the Aerodrome app, keep a little ETH on Base for network fees, and approve token spending when asked. Providing liquidity means depositing two tokens into a pool and receiving a position that earns trading fees or AERO rewards depending on the pool type. Locking AERO creates a veAERO NFT in your wallet. Because the token exists on several venues, always confirm the contract address you are trading.
History and notable events
Aerodrome went live on Base in 2023, as I understand it from public reports, built by the team behind Velodrome. The exact launch date is not in the data I was given, so treat that as general background. The protocol grew quickly alongside Base itself, and it became one of the most active venues on that network.
Price history shows how volatile the token has been. The recorded all-time high was about $2.32 on 2024-12-07. The recorded all-time low of about $0.00001861 on 2023-10-16 reflects the very early trading period around launch and should be read as a data artifact of thin early markets more than a meaningful price level. As of 2026-11-05, the price was about 4.7% lower than a week earlier and about 19% lower than a year earlier.
Data aggregators tag AERO with labels such as Base Ecosystem and Decentralized Exchange, and one lists it under a Binance Alpha program. A tag is not an endorsement. I have not listed specific audits, partnerships, or governance events here, because they are not public I was given.
Main risks
Price volatility. AERO has swung widely and sits well below its late-2024 high. Nothing here is a forecast, and this page is not buy or sell advice.
Dilution. Because new tokens are issued as emissions, the supply grows. If demand does not keep pace, the price can come under pressure. The large gap between market cap and fully diluted value shows how much supply is still to come or is not yet circulating.
Smart contract risk. Aerodrome is code that holds user funds. Even well-reviewed code can contain bugs, and exploits across DeFi have caused real losses.
Liquidity provider risks. Providing liquidity can lead to impermanent loss, where your pool position ends up worth less than simply holding the two tokens. Reward tokens may also drop in value.
Lock-up risk. A veAERO lock can run for years, and you cannot sell the locked tokens during that time.
Governance concentration. Voting power and incentives can be influenced by large holders and by projects paying for votes.
Network dependence. The protocol's fortunes are tied to activity on Base.
Scams. Fake tokens and copycat sites are common, so verify addresses and the site you are using.
How to store AERO safely
For long-term holding, a self-custody wallet that supports Base is generally safer than leaving tokens on an exchange. A hardware wallet paired with a standard wallet app is a common setup. Write your recovery phrase on paper or metal, keep it offline, and never type it into a website or share it with anyone claiming to offer support.
Before interacting with the protocol, confirm the AERO contract address from the project's official documentation, since lookalike tokens exist. Bookmark the real Aerodrome app instead of using search ads or links from social media messages.
When the app asks for token approvals, review them and avoid granting unlimited spending where you can. Revoke approvals you no longer need. If you lock AERO, your veAERO position is an NFT in your wallet, so protect that wallet as you would any valuable asset, and consider using a separate wallet for experiments with small amounts. Test a small transaction first, keep a little ETH on Base for fees, and keep records of your transactions for tax purposes, since rewards and swaps may be taxable depending on where you live.
