What dYdX (DYDX) is

dYdX is a decentralized exchange focused on perpetual futures, which are derivatives contracts that let traders take leveraged long or short positions on an asset without an expiry date. The project began on Ethereum in 2017 and is known for early work on decentralized margin trading and derivatives. The current version, dYdX V4, runs on its own blockchain built with the Cosmos SDK, rather than as a set of contracts on Ethereum.

DYDX is the native token of that chain, called the dYdX Chain. Public project materials describe it as the base-layer token that the community agreed on through governance. In 2026 it sits in a few overlapping categories: a governance token, a Layer 1 token, and a token tied to a DEX. Its fortunes are linked to how much trading the exchange attracts.

What the token is used for

According to the project's own announcements, DYDX has a few core jobs on the dYdX Chain. The first is staking: holders can stake the token with validators, which helps secure the network. The second is governance: token holders can create and vote on proposals, or delegate their voting power to others. Third, DYDX is used for fees on the chain, in line with how Layer 1 tokens usually work.

The original DYDX token was introduced in 2021 as an Ethereum-based governance token. In late 2023 its utility was expanded so that it could be used for staking and chain security as well. Trading fees on the exchange are generally paid in stablecoins such as USDC, so the link between exchange activity and token demand depends on how the community directs fees and rewards through governance. Treat any such mechanics as subject to change, since they are set by votes.

Supply and tokenomics

The maximum supply is 1 billion DYDX. The data at the time of writing shows a total supply of about 958 million and a circulating supply of about 846 million, so most tokens are already in circulation. As of 2026-11-05, the market cap is about $87.0 million and the fully diluted valuation about $98.5 million, which are close together because few tokens remain to be unlocked.

The original distribution, set in 2021, allocated tokens to early investors, the team and employees, the community through trading rewards, and a treasury. Those allocations were subject to vesting schedules. Exact current emission and reward rules are set by governance and can change, so check the latest governance proposals rather than relying on older summaries. Inflation or reward programs, where they exist, add to supply over time.

Chains and how it is held or traded

DYDX exists in more than one form. The native token on the dYdX Chain is the main version. Versions issued on Ethereum, commonly labelled ethDYDX, and bridged forms on Osmosis in the Cosmos ecosystem also exist, which is why the data lists Cosmos and Osmosis as issuing chains. Holders on Ethereum have been able to move tokens to the dYdX Chain through a bridge.

In general terms, DYDX trades on centralized exchanges and on some decentralized venues. At the time of writing, 24-hour trading volume was about $1.8 million, which is modest relative to its market cap, so large orders may move the price. Native DYDX can be held in Cosmos-compatible wallets, and staking is done by delegating to a validator. Always confirm which version of the token you are sending and which network a wallet or exchange supports before transferring.

History and notable events

dYdX was launched on Ethereum in 2017 and became one of the better-known derivatives exchanges in DeFi. The DYDX token arrived in 2021. In 2023 the community moved toward its own Cosmos-based chain, which became dYdX V4, and the token's role expanded to staking and security. The project is backed by well-known venture investors, including Andreessen Horowitz, DragonFly Capital and DeFiance Capital, based on portfolio listings.

The project description refers to a launch called dYdX Unlimited, which it says brings instant market listings, a liquidity engine called MegaVault, revised trading rewards and affiliate commissions. Check the project's current documentation for what has shipped and when.

Price history has been rough. The all-time high was about $4.52 on 2024-03-07. The all-time low was about $0.079 on 2026-03-07. As of 2026-11-05 the price was about $0.103, down roughly 62% over one year and about 5% over seven days.

Risks to know about

DYDX is a small-cap, volatile asset, and its price has fallen sharply from its peak. Specific risks to understand include:

  • Competition. Perpetuals trading is crowded, and rival exchanges, both decentralized and centralized, compete for the same traders.
  • Governance risk. Rules on fees, rewards and token emissions can change by vote, and voting power may be concentrated.
  • Chain and validator risk. A custom chain depends on a limited validator set. Bugs, outages or poor validator behavior could affect users.
  • Bridge and version confusion. Several token versions exist, and sending to the wrong network can lose funds.
  • Regulatory risk. Derivatives platforms attract scrutiny, and access to the front end may be limited in some countries. Users are responsible for following local laws.
  • Liquidity. Low trading volume can mean wide spreads.

Leveraged trading on the exchange itself can lead to rapid losses. None of this is advice to buy or sell.

How to store DYDX safely

For long-term holding, a self-custody wallet that supports Cosmos-based chains gives you control of your keys. Write the recovery phrase on paper or metal, store it offline, and never share it or type it into a website. A hardware wallet that supports the Cosmos ecosystem adds protection against malware.

If you stake, delegate to a reputable validator, and be aware that unstaking on Cosmos-based chains usually involves an unbonding period during which tokens cannot be moved or sold. Check the current period in the staking interface. Before moving a large amount, send a small test transaction to confirm the address and network are right. Be careful of fake airdrops, lookalike websites and unsolicited messages offering support, as these are common ways holders lose funds. Keeping tokens on an exchange is simpler but means trusting that company with custody.
