What Wormhole and the W token are
Wormhole is a cross-chain messaging protocol. It lets applications send data and tokens between blockchains that cannot talk to each other directly. A user might move USDC, ETH or SOL from one network to another, and a developer might trigger an action on one chain based on an event on another. On our site the project is listed as a cross-chain bridge linking more than 40 blockchains.
The W token is the project's governance asset. It is separate from the bridged assets that move through the protocol. You do not need W to send tokens across Wormhole, and holding W does not give you a claim on bridge funds. Its role is tied to the Wormhole DAO, the decentralized organization that makes decisions about how the protocol is run.
Wormhole describes its security as relying on multiple verification methods rather than a single check, which is how it tries to keep transmitted data valid. W was designed to spread control of the protocol across a wider community of holders instead of leaving it with the original developers.
What W is used for
The main documented purpose of W is governance. Holders can take part in the Wormhole DAO by creating, voting on and executing proposals. Recent project material describes this working for holders on Solana, Ethereum and EVM-compatible layer-2 networks, so a holder does not have to move tokens to one specific chain to take part. The project's launch roadmap described this as the first multichain governance system of its kind.
Staking is the other publicly described feature. In December 2024 the project announced a staking rewards program in which staked W on Solana would become eligible for rewards, claimable through a dashboard. Staking is also how holders gain voting weight in the DAO, according to public descriptions. Reward terms can change through governance, so check the current rules rather than relying on older announcements.
There is no public indication that W is needed to pay transfer fees on the bridge. Treat it as a governance and participation token. Beyond what the project has published, there is little else to say with confidence about further uses.
Supply and tokenomics
W has a fixed maximum supply of 10 billion tokens, and the total supply matches that figure. As of 2026-11-05, roughly 6.73 billion W were circulating, about two-thirds of the total. The remainder is still locked or scheduled for later release.
That gap matters because of the difference between market capitalization and fully diluted value. At the time of writing, market capitalization was about $74.3 million, while fully diluted value, which assumes all 10 billion tokens exist at today's price, was about $110.4 million. The difference reflects the tokens not yet circulating.
The price was about $0.011 on that date. That is far below the all-time high of about $1.66 recorded on 2024-04-03, and close to the all-time low of about $0.0078 recorded on 2026-07-31. Over the previous year, the price had fallen by roughly 80 percent. These figures are a snapshot, not a forecast.
The exact allocation across community, ecosystem, investors and the core team, and the release schedule, are set out in the project's own tokenomics documents. Read those directly if you want details, because remaining releases can add to selling pressure over time.
Chains, holding and trading
W is issued on several networks. Our data lists Solana, Ethereum, Arbitrum and Base. The project describes W as a native multichain token rather than a token on one chain that is wrapped elsewhere, so the same asset can be used across these networks and is moved between them through Wormhole itself.
To hold W, you need a wallet that supports the network you are using. Solana holders need a Solana wallet, and holders on Ethereum, Arbitrum or Base can use any EVM-compatible wallet. The tokens use standard formats on each chain, so ordinary wallets can display and send them.
W trades on centralized exchanges and on decentralized exchanges on the chains above. As of 2026-11-05, 24-hour trading volume was about $11.0 million and the token ranked around 331 by market capitalization. That is a mid-sized market with real but limited depth, so large orders can move the price more than they would for a major asset.
Before buying, check that the token address matches the one the project publishes. Lookalike tokens with the same name or symbol exist on most chains.
History and notable events
Wormhole launched as a bridge between Solana and Ethereum before the W token existed. In February 2022, an attacker exploited the Solana side of the token bridge and minted about 120,000 wrapped ETH without backing. Jump Crypto, a backer of the project, replaced the missing funds so that the wrapped tokens remained backed. The incident became one of the best-known bridge exploits and is a reminder of how much value cross-chain bridges concentrate.
The W token followed in 2024. The project published a launch roadmap in early April of that year, describing the move to a native multichain token and a DAO-based governance model. An airdrop to early users took place around the launch, and the token's all-time high price was recorded on 2024-04-03, near the start of trading.
In December 2024 the project announced its staking rewards program. More recent news from the project focuses on governance tools that let holders on Solana, Ethereum and EVM layer-2 networks create, vote on and execute proposals. The price has trended down since the launch period, as the figures above show.
Risks to understand
The main risks fall into several groups.
Bridge and smart-contract risk is the first. Wormhole moves value between many chains, which makes it an attractive target. The 2022 exploit shows that even well-known protocols can fail, and a new incident could harm confidence in the protocol and its token.
Market risk is the second. W has fallen sharply from its launch-period high and was near its all-time low in mid-2026. About a third of the total supply was not yet circulating as of the date above, and future releases could add selling pressure. Moderate trading volume means prices can swing quickly.
Governance risk is the third. Voting power follows token holdings, so large holders can have outsized influence. Proposals can change staking rules, treasury spending or protocol settings, and the outcomes are not guaranteed to benefit smaller holders.
Finally, there are scam risks. Fake airdrop sites, lookalike tokens and phishing messages often target projects with a prior airdrop. None of this is investment advice, and you should only put in what you can afford to lose.
How to store W safely
How you store W depends on how much you hold and how you plan to use it. For small amounts you plan to vote or stake with, a software wallet on the relevant chain is enough, such as a Solana wallet for Solana-based W or an EVM wallet for Ethereum, Arbitrum and Base. Write down the recovery phrase on paper, keep it offline, and never type it into a website or share it with anyone, including people claiming to be support staff.
For larger holdings, a hardware wallet keeps the private keys on a separate device. You can still connect it to governance and staking interfaces and approve each action on the device itself.
A few habits help. Verify the token address from the project's official documentation before adding or swapping. Be cautious of unexpected airdrop claims, and do not sign transactions you do not understand. Review and revoke old token approvals from time to time. Leaving tokens on an exchange is convenient for trading, but you do not control the keys, and you also cannot vote in the DAO from there unless the exchange offers that.
By the numbers
Wormhole in numbers
Wormhole (W) is ranked #325 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $74.3M and a price of $0.0110 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation is $110M, so roughly 67% of the eventual supply is in circulation today; tokens still to be released could add selling pressure.
The price was down 2.7% over 7 days, down 23.3% over 30 days, down 81.0% over the past year. It trades about 99% below its all-time high of $1.66, set on Apr 3, 2024.
About 6.74B W are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 10B (67% issued).
24-hour trading volume was about $15.2M, or 20% of its market cap: high turnover.
W has token contracts on 4 chains we track, including Solana, Arbitrum, Ethereum, Base. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

W FAQs
What is the Wormhole (W) token used for?
W is the governance token of the Wormhole protocol. Holders can take part in the Wormhole DAO by voting on proposals, and staking is available through the project's rewards program. It is not required to send assets across the bridge.
What is the total supply of W?
The maximum and total supply is 10 billion W. As of 2026-11-05, about 6.73 billion were circulating, so roughly a third was still locked or scheduled for later release.
Which blockchains is W available on?
Our data lists Solana, Ethereum, Arbitrum and Base. The project describes it as a native multichain token, so the same asset can be used across these networks and moved between them via Wormhole.
Is W the same thing as the Wormhole bridge?
Wormhole is the protocol that sends messages and tokens between blockchains, while W is its governance token. You can use the bridge without owning W, and owning W does not give you ownership of assets moving through the bridge.
Why is the W price so far below its all-time high?
As of 2026-11-05, W traded at about $0.011, down around 80 percent over the previous year and well below its 2024 high of about $1.66. Such figures change constantly, and this page does not predict future prices or offer buy or sell advice.
Was Wormhole ever hacked?
The bridge was exploited in February 2022, when an attacker minted about 120,000 wrapped ETH on Solana without backing. Jump Crypto, a project backer, covered the shortfall. The W token launched later, in 2024.
