What 0x Protocol and ZRX are

0x Protocol is open infrastructure for trading tokens on blockchains. It began on Ethereum in 2017, built by ZeroEx Labs, and was designed so that two parties could swap assets directly, without a central exchange holding their funds. Instead of running one exchange, 0x provided shared smart contracts and tools that other developers could build on.

In practice, that means 0x is less a destination app and more a plumbing layer. Wallets, trading apps and other products can plug into it to source liquidity and settle trades. The project's current materials describe it as exchange infrastructure and as APIs for building financial apps, and they say it now covers trading across multiple blockchains, not just Ethereum.

ZRX is the token tied to the protocol. It is an Ethereum-based token, not the native coin of its own blockchain. At the time of writing, the project was ranked around 307th by market capitalization, which places it among mid-sized to smaller crypto assets rather than the largest ones. Its categories include DeFi, DEX, exchange-related and governance tokens. This page explains what is publicly known about the token and its risks. It is not investment advice.

What ZRX is used for

Public descriptions of ZRX point to two main purposes: governance and rewarding participants. On the governance side, token holders were meant to have a say in how the protocol evolves, such as voting on proposed changes to its contracts and rules.

On the incentive side, the original design had a fee element. Some sources describe liquidity takers paying a fee in ZRX, which was intended to reward relayers, the businesses that hosted order books and matched traders. The idea was to give those relayers a reason to keep markets liquid.

The protocol has gone through several versions since launch, and the exact role of ZRX in fees and staking has changed over time. Current project materials focus on APIs and on letting builders set their own fee percentage and fee recipient on trades, which is a separate monetization route from the token. Because of that shift, anyone trying to understand today's utility should read the project's own documentation and governance posts rather than rely on older summaries. the public information available here do not give a complete, current picture of every use, so it is safest to treat governance as the clearest ongoing function.

Supply and tokenomics

ZRX has a fixed maximum supply of 1 billion tokens, and the total supply equals that maximum. Of this, roughly 848.4 million tokens were circulating as of 2026-11-05, which is about 85% of the cap. The remainder is not yet in circulation, and this affects the gap between market capitalization and fully diluted value.

As of 2026-11-05, the approximate figures were:

  • Price: about $0.097
  • Market capitalization: about $82.4 million
  • Fully diluted valuation: about $97.1 million
  • 24-hour trading volume: about $4.1 million

These numbers move constantly and should be treated as a snapshot only.

The data available here does not detail the original allocation between the team, early investors, a developer fund and the public sale, nor any current unlock schedule. Readers who care about how tokens were distributed should check the project's official documentation. What can be said is that with a hard cap in place and most tokens already circulating, future dilution from new issuance is limited by design, though how remaining tokens are released still matters.

Chains, holding and trading

ZRX is issued on Ethereum as a standard token, so it works with the large ecosystem of Ethereum wallets, decentralized exchanges and lending apps. It is not the native token of any chain, which means it is not used to pay network gas fees. Transactions involving ZRX on Ethereum require ETH for gas.

People generally hold ZRX in one of two ways. Some keep it on a centralized exchange account, which is convenient but means the exchange controls the keys. Others hold it in a self-custody wallet, where they control the private keys and interact directly with onchain applications.

Trading happens in both places too. ZRX has been listed on a range of centralized exchanges, and it can also be swapped on decentralized exchanges, including ones that route trades through 0x's own infrastructure. Liquidity can be thin compared with the largest tokens. As of 2026-11-05, daily volume was in the low millions of dollars, so larger orders can move the price noticeably. Bridged or wrapped versions of ZRX on other networks may exist, but their contracts differ from the original, so check contract addresses carefully before interacting.

History and notable events

ZRX launched on 2017-08-11, during the first wave of Ethereum token sales, and the protocol came from ZeroEx Labs. It was among the early projects aiming to make peer-to-peer token exchange a reusable building block instead of a single product. That positioning helped it gain attention as decentralized exchange ideas spread.

The token reached its all-time high of about $2.50 on 2018-01-12, at the peak of that earlier market cycle. It has traded far below that level since. More recently, the token set an all-time low of about $0.0731 on 2026-08-18, and as of 2026-11-05 it was roughly 3% lower over seven days and about 47% lower over one year.

The protocol itself has been through multiple versions and a broadening of focus, from an order-book relayer model toward APIs and liquidity access across several chains. Backers listed in market data categories include well-known crypto investment firms. Beyond these points, public sources provided here do not include a detailed timeline, so readers should consult the project's official announcements for specifics on upgrades, governance votes or any token changes.

Risks to understand

ZRX carries the usual risks of a small-cap crypto token, plus some specific to its situation.

  • Price risk: The token is far below its 2018 peak and fell sharply over the last year, with its all-time low set in August 2026. Past declines do not indicate what comes next in either direction.
  • Utility risk: The clearest role for ZRX is governance and incentives. If the project's business model relies more on APIs and builder fees than on the token, demand for ZRX may not track the usage of the protocol.
  • Competition: Many aggregators and decentralized exchanges offer overlapping services, and the sector changes quickly.
  • Liquidity risk: With modest daily volume, selling or buying a large amount can affect the price.
  • Smart contract risk: Any protocol built on smart contracts can have bugs or exploits, and interacting with trading contracts can expose your wallet to approvals you may forget about.
  • Regulatory risk: Rules affecting tokens and decentralized trading services differ by country and can change.

Nothing here is advice to buy or sell. Only use money you can afford to lose, and do your own research.

How to store ZRX safely

Because ZRX is an Ethereum token, any wallet that supports Ethereum can hold it. For small amounts, a reputable software wallet may be enough. For larger holdings, many people prefer a hardware wallet, which keeps private keys offline and requires physical confirmation of transactions.

A few habits help regardless of the wallet type:

  • Write down your recovery phrase on paper, store it offline, and never type it into a website, chat or app that asks for it.
  • Confirm the official ZRX contract address from the project's own documentation before adding the token or swapping, since lookalike tokens exist.
  • Send a small test transaction first when moving a token to a new address.
  • Review and revoke old token approvals you granted to trading contracts, using a trusted approvals tool.
  • Keep some ETH in the wallet to cover gas fees.
  • Be wary of unsolicited messages, airdrops and support requests, which are common scam methods.

If you keep tokens on an exchange instead, use a strong unique password and two-factor authentication, and remember that you rely on the exchange's security and solvency. Self-custody gives more control but also puts full responsibility on you.
