What Linea and the LINEA token are
Linea is a Layer 2 network for Ethereum. It runs Ethereum-compatible transactions off the main chain, bundles them, and posts zero-knowledge proofs back to Ethereum Mainnet so the results can be checked there. Its developers describe the technology as Ethereum-equivalent, meaning apps written for Ethereum should generally work with little or no change.
The LINEA token is the native token tied to this network. Linea was built by Consensys, the company behind MetaMask and Infura. The project is now presented through the Linea Association, which publishes a whitepaper covering the token's classification, functions, market risks and compliance details.
The project's own description frames Linea as a chain meant to strengthen Ethereum rather than compete with it. It highlights ETH burn mechanics, native yield on bridged ETH, deep DeFi integration and a large ecosystem fund. At the time of writing, the token ranks around 405 by market capitalisation, so it is a small-to-mid-sized asset by market value.
In short, Linea is the network and LINEA is the token connected to its incentives and ecosystem. They are related but not the same thing, and the network can be used without holding the token.
What the token is used for
The public material is clearer on intent than on mechanics. Backers describe LINEA as an incentive tool meant to draw capital and activity toward Linea and, through it, toward Ethereum. The data describes it as designed to support both the Linea network and Ethereum.
A point that often causes confusion: Linea did not launch with its own token. For its first period the network used ETH for transaction fees, and commentary at the time argued the chain did not need a separate token. LINEA arrived later and is not the gas token. Users still pay network fees in ETH.
The project's own messaging points to a few roles for the token and ecosystem. These include ETH burn mechanics tied to network activity, funding for builders and apps through a large ecosystem fund, and reward programmes surfaced through the Linea Hub. Exact rules for how burns, rewards and any governance rights work are set out in the whitepaper and project documentation, and they can change, so read the current versions rather than relying on a summary.
This page does not claim any further utility beyond what the project states publicly.
Supply and tokenomics
Figures below are approximate and as of 2026-11-05. They move constantly.
- Circulating supply: about 24.5 billion LINEA
- Total supply: about 71.6 billion LINEA
- Maximum supply: about 72.0 billion LINEA
- Market cap: about $57.0 million
- Fully diluted valuation: about $166.5 million
- Price: about $0.0023
The gap between circulating and total supply matters. Only roughly a third of existing tokens were circulating at the time of writing, so a large portion remains held in allocations such as the ecosystem fund, team and early contributors, or is subject to scheduled releases. When those tokens enter circulation, supply rises, which can weigh on price if demand does not keep pace. That is a structural feature to be aware of, not a forecast.
The fully diluted valuation, about three times the market cap, is a rough indicator of how much of the supply is still to come to market. The precise allocation percentages and vesting schedules are in the Linea Association whitepaper, and they are worth checking directly rather than trusting secondhand tables.
Chains, holding and trading
LINEA is issued on two networks: Linea itself and Ethereum. Because both are EVM-compatible, any Ethereum-style wallet can hold the token once it is pointed at the right network. Moving it between the two chains uses a bridge, and each bridge adds its own fees, wait times and smart-contract risk.
In general terms, people hold LINEA in a self-custody wallet such as MetaMask or a hardware wallet, or leave it on a centralised exchange account. It is traded on centralised exchanges and on decentralised exchanges that operate on Linea or Ethereum. Liquidity varies by venue. At the time of writing, 24-hour trading volume was about $7.1 million, which is modest compared with the market cap and means large orders can move the price.
Before sending any tokens, confirm three things: the network you are sending on, the contract address of the token on that network, and that the receiving wallet or exchange supports that network. Sending to the wrong network is a common and often unrecoverable error. Imitation tokens with the same name or symbol also exist on EVM chains, so the contract address from the project's official documentation is the reliable identifier.
History and notable events
Linea's mainnet went live in 2023 under Consensys, and for its early life it operated without a native token. The LINEA token followed, with its main market debut around 10 September 2025, which is also the date of the recorded all-time high of about $0.0467.
Since then the price has fallen sharply. As of 2026-11-05 it was about $0.0023, roughly 80 percent below where it stood a year earlier and down about 5 percent over the past seven days. The all-time low of about $0.00207 was recorded on 19 August 2026, so the price was not far above that low at the time of writing. This pattern of a high at launch followed by a long decline is common for newly listed tokens with a small share of supply in circulation, though the reasons differ by project.
Other public context includes the project's classification under Layer 2 and zero-knowledge categories, its association with the Consensys portfolio, and its Ethereum-aligned positioning. The Linea Hub is the project's directory for reward programmes, events and apps. For specific dates of upgrades, burns or governance changes, check the project's official announcements, as this page does not list events it cannot confirm.
Risks to understand
LINEA carries risks that apply to most small-cap tokens and some that are specific to Layer 2 networks.
Market risk. The price fell about 80 percent over the year to 2026-11-05. Volume is modest and the market cap is small, so prices can swing quickly and exits may be costly.
Supply risk. Most of the total supply was not yet circulating at the time of writing. Future releases can add selling pressure.
Technology risk. Zero-knowledge rollups rely on complex code, provers and bridges. Bugs, outages or sequencer issues could disrupt the network or user funds. Layer 2 designs also vary in how decentralised their operators and upgrade controls are, so read what the project says about its current stage.
Competition. Many Ethereum Layer 2 networks compete for the same users, developers and liquidity. Token value depends partly on whether Linea keeps attracting activity.
Scam risk. Fake airdrops, copycat tokens and phishing sites target users of popular chains. Unlimited token approvals given to unknown apps are a frequent cause of losses.
Regulatory risk. Token rules differ by country and can change. Nothing here is investment advice, and this page makes no price predictions.
How to store LINEA safely
For anything beyond a small amount, self-custody is the usual approach. A hardware wallet paired with an Ethereum-compatible interface lets you hold LINEA on either Linea or Ethereum while keeping private keys offline. Write the recovery phrase on paper or metal, store it in more than one secure place, and never type it into a website, chat or app. No legitimate support team will ask for it.
Good habits for LINEA specifically:
- Add the token using the contract address from the official project documentation, not from a search result or a message.
- Send a small test transfer first, especially when bridging between Linea and Ethereum.
- Keep some ETH on Linea, since fees are paid in ETH rather than LINEA.
- Review and revoke token approvals you no longer need.
- Use a separate wallet for experimenting with new apps, and a different one for long-term holdings.
If you keep tokens on an exchange, you rely on that company's security and solvency, and you do not control the keys. Enable two-factor authentication using an authenticator app rather than SMS, and use withdrawal allowlists where offered.
By the numbers
Linea in numbers
Linea (LINEA) is ranked #411 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $54.9M and a price of $0.002238 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation is $160M, so roughly 34% of the eventual supply is in circulation today; tokens still to be released could add selling pressure.
The price was down 2.6% over 7 days, down 19.0% over 30 days, down 81.7% over the past year. It trades about 95% below its all-time high of $0.0467, set on Sep 10, 2025.
About 24.53B LINEA are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 72.01B (34% issued).
24-hour trading volume was about $7.51M, or 14% of its market cap: high turnover.
LINEA is the native token of Linea; it also has token contracts on Ethereum. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

LINEA FAQs
Is LINEA used to pay gas fees on Linea?
No. Users pay network fees on Linea in ETH. LINEA is a separate token tied to the network's incentives, ecosystem programmes and burn mechanics, as described by the project.
Which blockchains is LINEA on?
LINEA is issued on Linea and on Ethereum. You can hold it in any EVM-compatible wallet set to the correct network, and bridge it between the two chains when needed.
How many LINEA tokens are there?
As of 2026-11-05, about 24.5 billion LINEA were circulating out of roughly 71.6 billion total, with a maximum supply of about 72.0 billion. These numbers change as tokens are released.
Why is the LINEA price so far below its all-time high?
The token began trading around 10 September 2025 at a peak near $0.047, and as of 2026-11-05 it traded near $0.0023. Large unreleased supply, small market size and broader weakness in smaller tokens can all contribute, though no single cause is confirmed here.
