What Mina Protocol is

Mina Protocol is a layer 1 blockchain built around zero-knowledge cryptography. Its best-known design choice is size: using recursive zk-SNARKs, the chain is meant to stay at a roughly constant, very small size (publicly described as about 22kb) no matter how much activity it processes. That is why it is often called the world's lightest blockchain.

The idea is that a person can verify the current state of the chain with a small proof instead of downloading the full transaction history. In principle, this lowers the hardware needed to check the network for yourself, which supports decentralization.

More recently the project has described itself as a ZK blockchain for proving anything, and it frames its goal as a privacy-preserving gateway between real-world data and crypto. Applications on Mina are called zkApps, and they run computation off-chain and submit a proof to the network. MINA is the network's native token. In our categories it sits under Layer 1 tokens and Zero-knowledge (ZK) tokens.

What the MINA token is used for

Public descriptions say MINA is used for three main things: paying transaction fees, staking to help secure the network, and taking part in on-chain governance. Mina uses proof of stake, so holders can delegate their tokens to block producers and earn a share of rewards without moving the coins out of their own wallet.

MINA is also the fuel for zkApps. Developers writing in TypeScript with the project's tooling can create apps whose proofs are verified by the chain, and the token pays for the transactions that carry those proofs.

Beyond these roles, the public information available to us do not point to other uses, so it is best to treat MINA as a network utility and staking token rather than assume extra functions.

Supply and tokenomics

MINA has no fixed maximum supply listed in the data we have. At the time of writing, about 1.29 billion tokens were circulating, and the total supply figure is the same, so the fully diluted valuation matches the market cap at roughly $73.5M as of 2026-11-05.

Because there is no stated hard cap, new tokens can enter circulation through block rewards that go to block producers and stakers. That means holders who do not stake can see their share of the supply shrink over time. Details such as the exact reward schedule, the original allocation to early backers and the genesis lockups are not in our data, so check the project's own documentation for the current emission rules.

The project is backed in coin-listing data by several well-known investment firms, including Paradigm, Polychain Capital, Multicoin Capital, Pantera Capital and Coinbase Ventures. Backers do not guarantee any outcome for the token.

Chains and how it is held and traded

MINA is the native coin of its own chain, the Mina network, rather than a token issued on another chain. Our data lists no wrapped or bridged versions, though third-party bridges may exist, and any of them carries extra risk.

Most holders keep MINA in a wallet that supports the Mina network, such as Auro Wallet, or in a hardware wallet where supported. Staking is done by delegating to a block producer from your wallet.

MINA is also traded on centralized exchanges. Coinbase announced a listing in April 2022. At the time of writing, 24-hour trading volume was about $4.9M, which is modest compared with the market cap. Thinner liquidity can mean larger price swings and wider spreads for bigger orders.

History and notable events

Mina's mainnet launched in 2021, and the token reached its all-time high of about $9.09 on 2021-05-31. Coinbase added it in 2022. In 2025 the project published a post about a new chapter for the ecosystem, and it now describes itself as a ZK blockchain for proving anything. A maintenance release for networks called Mesa was also mentioned in recent public posts.

The price path has been harsh. As of 2026-11-05 MINA traded around $0.057, down about 54% over one year and about 9% over seven days. Its all-time low of about $0.0367 was set on 2026-06-30. The token ranked around 336 by market cap at the time of writing. Those figures describe the past and are not a forecast.

Risks to understand

The main risks are as follows.

  • Price risk: the token has fallen far from its peak and remains volatile.
  • Adoption risk: zkApps need real users and developers. A light chain with strong technology still has to compete with many other layer 1 and ZK projects.
  • Liquidity risk: daily volume is small relative to many larger tokens.
  • Inflation risk: with no stated maximum supply, unstaked holders can be diluted.
  • Technical risk: zero-knowledge systems are complex, and bugs in circuits, tooling or upgrades can cause problems.
  • Counterparty and scam risk: fake wallets, phishing links and impersonation of support staff are common around any popular token.

How to store MINA safely

For anything beyond a small amount, self-custody is generally safer than leaving coins on an exchange. Use a wallet that supports Mina, download it only from the official source, and write down the recovery phrase offline. Never type it into a website or share it with anyone, including people claiming to be support.

If you stake, delegation does not hand your coins to the block producer, but check how the wallet handles it and whether any unlocking period applies. Send a small test transaction before moving a large balance and double-check the address you are sending to.

A hardware wallet adds protection against malware on your computer, where it supports the network. Keep your device software updated, and keep separate backups of the recovery phrase in more than one secure place.

By the numbers

Mina Protocol in numbers

Mina Protocol (MINA) is ranked #338 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $71.4M and a price of $0.0552 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($71.4M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.

The price was down 6.9% over 7 days, down 47.7% over 30 days, down 68.6% over the past year. It trades about 99% below its all-time high of $9.09, set on May 31, 2021.

About 1.29B MINA are in circulation. No hard maximum supply is listed, so new tokens can still be issued.

24-hour trading volume was about $5.19M, or 7.3% of its market cap: moderate turnover.

CoinGecko groups MINA under Layer 1 tokens, Zero-knowledge (ZK) tokens.

MINA FAQs

What is MINA used for?

MINA is the native token of the Mina network. It is used to pay transaction fees, stake to help secure the chain, and take part in on-chain governance.

Why is Mina called the lightest blockchain?

Mina uses recursive zk-SNARKs so the chain's state can be verified with a small proof, publicly described as about 22kb. Its size stays roughly constant as usage grows, which lets users verify the network without storing the full history.

Does MINA have a maximum supply?

No maximum supply is listed in our data. At the time of writing about 1.29 billion MINA were in circulation, and the total supply figure was the same.

Can I stake MINA?

Yes. Mina is a proof-of-stake chain, and holders can delegate tokens to a block producer from a compatible wallet to earn rewards. Rewards and terms can change, so check the current rules before delegating.

What are MINA's all-time high and low?

MINA set its all-time high of about $9.09 on 2021-05-31 and an all-time low of about $0.0367 on 2026-06-30. As of 2026-11-05 it traded around $0.057. This is historical data, not a prediction.

What is the market cap of Mina Protocol?

As of Nov 6, 2026, Mina Protocol had a market cap of about $71.4M, ranking #338 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.

What is the all-time high of MINA?

Mina Protocol's all-time high is $9.09, reached on May 31, 2021. Its all-time low is $0.0367 (Jun 30, 2026). Past prices say nothing about future returns.

What is the circulating supply of MINA?

As of Nov 6, 2026, about 1.29B MINA were in circulation; no fixed maximum supply is listed.
