Zama Review 2026: FHE Confidential Finance on Ethereum

Zama is an FHE-based confidentiality protocol that keeps token amounts and balances encrypted on public blockchains such as Ethereum. It targets institutions, with live confidential tokens, vaults and swaps, but audit details and fees are not public.

Our verdict on Zama

7.0/10

Zama suits institutions, developers and DeFi users who want encrypted balances and transfer amounts on Ethereum without leaving public infrastructure. Its main strength is a working product set, with confidential tokens, vaults and swaps, plus named integrations. The main caveat is limited transparency: no listed audits, no published fees, a short DefiLlama history and newer FHE technology. Read the security status page and start small.

What is Zama?

Zama is an open source cryptography company building Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE) tools for blockchains. Its homepage calls it the confidentiality protocol for onchain finance, aimed at institutions that need to issue, trade and manage assets on public chains without exposing amounts and balances.

The protocol has live products: confidential tokens such as cUSDC, confidential vaults for yield, and confidential swaps. It also provides the ERC-7984 token standard and an SDK for developers. DefiLlama tracks it in the Privacy category on Ethereum, with about $119.8 million in TVL, a 12.4% drop over seven days, and a listing date of May 2026.

The homepage cites real deployments: Morpho and Steakhouse for confidential yield, T-REX Ledger for RWA, Bron for payroll, Raycash for banking, Blockscout for explorer support, and GSR for a confidential OTC trade. These are the project's own claims. The ZAMA token exists, with staking and bridging links on the site, and a search result reports a Series B raise of $57M in June 2025.

How Zama works

Zama uses Fully Homomorphic Encryption, a form of cryptography that lets software compute on data while it stays encrypted. On a public blockchain, balances and transfer amounts are normally visible to everyone. Zama keeps those values encrypted, including while smart contracts process them.

For users, the entry point is shielding. A user deposits USDC into the official cUSDC contract and receives cUSDC 1:1, and the balance is encrypted from that point. Confidential tokens follow the ERC-7984 standard and can be sent, placed in confidential vaults or traded in confidential swaps. Unshielding converts them back to the regular token.

The homepage says the protocol runs natively on any L1 or L2 without a new chain or trusted intermediary, and stays publicly verifiable. It also describes programmable compliance, meaning confidentiality can coexist with regulatory requirements. How decryption rights and compliance controls are implemented is not detailed publicly.

7 features

Key features

01

Confidential tokens

Deposit USDC into the official cUSDC contract and receive cUSDC 1:1, with the balance encrypted afterward.

02

Confidential vaults

Earn onchain yield while keeping the position confidential. The homepage cites Steakhouse USDC Prime on Morpho, with deposit size, direction and timing encrypted.

03

Confidential swaps

Trade with amount, direction and price limit encrypted, which the homepage says addresses information leakage and front-running.

04

ERC-7984 token standard

A confidential token standard with OpenZeppelin-based contracts, so developers can add encrypted balances in a few lines of Solidity.

05

SDK and developer docs

Developer hub, documentation, GitHub and an SDK let teams build confidential apps or integrate confidential tokens.

06

Explorer support

Blockscout indexes ERC-7984 activity, showing senders and recipients while amounts stay encrypted.

07

Institutional use cases

The homepage names confidential RWA tokenization, payments, payroll, DeFi and token distribution as target uses.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Live products on Ethereum mainnet: confidential tokens, vaults and swaps.
  • Open source approach with documentation, GitHub and an SDK.
  • Named integrations including Morpho, T-REX Ledger, Blockscout and GSR, per the homepage.
  • Designed to pair confidentiality with verifiability and compliance, which suits regulated institutions.
  • Does not require a new chain, according to the project.
  • A published Series B raise of $57M in June 2025, per public reporting.

Watch out for

  • DefiLlama lists no audits for the protocol, and public sources include no audit reports.
  • Confidentiality relies on FHE tooling that is newer and less battle-tested than standard smart contracts.
  • Public deployments are on Ethereum only according to public sources, even though the homepage says it can run on any L1 or L2.
  • TVL fell 12.4% over seven days, and the DefiLlama listing only dates from May 2026, so the track record is short.
  • Fees for shielding, swapping and vault use are not published publicly.
  • Compliance and KYC features are aimed at institutions, which may not suit users who want fully anonymous tools.

Zama fees

Fees are not published. There is no stated charge for shielding, unshielding, swapping or vault deposits.

Users would see network gas costs and any product-level fees inside the Zama App and the documentation before confirming a transaction. Encrypted computation may carry costs beyond ordinary transfers, but the project does not say.

Is Zama safe?

DefiLlama lists no audits for Zama, and the project does not include audit reports. The homepage links to a Security Status page, which readers should review. FHE-based smart contracts are a newer approach, so cryptographic and implementation risk is higher than for simple token contracts.

Shielding means depositing tokens into a contract, so smart-contract risk applies. Compliance-oriented design also means confidentiality is not the same as anonymity. No hacks or incidents appear. Check local regulations on privacy tools and never deposit more than you can afford to lose.

6 steps

How to get started with Zama

  1. 1

Read the documentation and the Introduction to FHE on the official site to understand what is and is not hidden.

  2. 2

Check the Security Status page linked from the homepage before depositing funds.

  3. 3

Open the Zama App and connect an Ethereum wallet.

  4. 4

Start with a small amount: shield USDC to receive cUSDC at 1:1.

  5. 5

Try sending, earning or swapping confidentially once comfortable, and confirm network gas costs first.

  6. 6

Developers can use the SDK and ERC-7984 docs to build confidential apps.

Who Zama is for

Zama is for institutions exploring RWA tokenization, payroll and OTC trading on public chains, and for developers who want to add encrypted balances through ERC-7984. DeFi users who value transaction privacy may also find it useful, provided they accept the compliance-focused design.

Zama FAQs

What is Zama?

Zama is a cryptography company and protocol that uses Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE) to keep amounts and balances encrypted on public blockchains. It lets assets be issued, traded and managed confidentially while staying verifiable.

What is Fully Homomorphic Encryption in Zama?

FHE allows computation on encrypted data without decrypting it first. Zama uses it so balances and transfer amounts stay encrypted even while smart contracts process them.

Does Zama have a token?

Zama's own token is ZAMA. The homepage links to buying, staking and bridging it, and public reporting mentions that more than 30% of circulating supply was staked at one point. Check current figures on a market data site before acting.

How do I make USDC confidential with Zama?

The homepage says users deposit USDC into the official cUSDC contract and receive cUSDC 1:1, with the balance encrypted from then on. A cUSDT product is also listed in the footer.

Is Zama fully anonymous?

Zama is not described as an anonymous mixer. It emphasises programmable compliance and verifiability. The GSR example involved two KYC'd counterparties, and Bron's payroll amounts were visible only to sender and recipient.

Which blockchains does Zama support?

Public sources show deployments on Ethereum mainnet. The homepage says the protocol can run natively on any L1 or L2, but only Ethereum is listed in the DefiLlama data.
