What is Sablier Lockup?

Sablier Lockup is part of Sablier, a protocol for onchain token distribution. DAOs, businesses and AI agents use it for vesting, payroll, grants and airdrops. The homepage says it is live on 24+ EVM chains, and DefiLlama lists a wider set of chains including Solana.

The homepage names Ethena, Uniswap, Fluid, Maple, Fjord and Immutable as users and reports 912,000+ transactions and 437,000+ users. These are self-reported figures. It also says Sablier was established in 2019 and lists Fenbushi, Evan Van Ness, Lito Coen and Daniel Bar among its backers.

DefiLlama files it under Payments, with about $1.87 million in TVL, down 3.1% over seven days, and shows it listed since July 2023. It has no token. The protocol is built by Sablier Labs.

How Sablier Lockup works

A sender deposits tokens into a Sablier smart contract and defines a schedule: start, end, optional cliff and the unlock shape. The contract releases tokens over time, and the recipient can withdraw whatever has vested so far. The sender does not need to take action after setup.

Streams have defined statuses, such as pending and others described in the documentation. Bulk creation lets a team set up many streams in one transaction, which saves gas.

For airdrops, the sender uploads a recipient list and the protocol uses a Merkle-based system so recipients claim their allocation. Airdrops can be instant or streamed over time, which keeps recipients engaged instead of dumping at once.

Key features

01

Per-second streaming

Tokens vest by the second rather than in quarterly unlocks, with support for cliffs.

02

Flexible vesting schedules

Supports linear, cliff, monthly, discrete unlock and timelock schedules, plus custom curves.

03

Bulk stream creation

Teams can create many streams at once, which suits large contributor or employee lists.

Upload a recipient CSV and launch Merkle-based airdrops, either instant or vested, with automatic claiming.

05

Recipient self-service withdrawals

Recipients track their streams and withdraw vested funds without the sender's continued involvement.

06

Multi-chain deployment

Live on 24+ EVM chains per the homepage, with a request route for new deployments.

07

AI agent skills

Sablier publishes agent skills so AI workflows can plan vesting streams and Merkle airdrops.

08

Wallet and Safe access

The app can be used directly from a wallet or opened in Safe for multisig teams.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Clear, narrow purpose: vesting, payroll, grants and airdrops
  • Supports cliffs, monthly unlocks, timelocks and custom curves
  • Broad multi-chain availability, including many EVM networks
  • Permissionless and usable directly from a wallet or Safe
  • Audited by multiple parties, with a public audit contest
  • Recipients can withdraw vested funds without sender involvement

Watch out for

  • No native token, so there is no governance or fee-sharing token for users to hold
  • Pricing and fee splits are not detailed and must be checked on the pricing page
  • Lockup streams are built to be unchangeable, so setup mistakes may be hard to reverse
  • Smart-contract risk remains on every supported chain despite audits, and more chains means a larger surface
  • TVL of about $1.9 million is modest, so it is not a measure of the value of vesting flows it can secure

Sablier Lockup fees

Sablier says it offers plan options and fee splits, shown on its pricing page before you start. Specific percentages or amounts are not public used for this review, so they are not stated here.

Users should also expect normal network gas costs on whichever chain they use. Sablier describes its batch distributions as gas-efficient, but actual costs vary by chain and activity.

Is Sablier Lockup safe?

Sablier states its contracts are audited and unchangeable. It cites a security audit, an audit contest and five other auditors, and DefiLlama lists two audits. The code is public on GitHub. Audits reduce risk but do not remove it, and each new chain deployment adds to the exposure.

Sablier is non-custodial in the sense that tokens sit in smart contracts rather than with a company, but senders still depend on contract correctness and on entering the right parameters. The site publishes a risk notice, terms of service and a privacy policy, which are worth reading. No incidents are mentioned publicly used here.

6 steps

How to get started with Sablier Lockup

  1. 1

Decide what you need: a vesting schedule, a payroll stream, a grant or an airdrop.

  2. 2

Review the pricing page and the risk notice to understand fees and limitations.

  3. 3

Open the app and connect a wallet, or open it in Safe if you manage funds with a multisig.

  4. 4

Select a supported chain and the token you want to distribute.

  5. 5

Configure the schedule, including recipients, amounts, cliffs and duration, and double-check it because the contracts are designed to be unchangeable.

  6. 6

Create the stream or airdrop and share the recipient link so they can track and withdraw vested funds.

Sablier Lockup FAQs

What is Sablier Lockup?

Sablier Lockup is a token distribution protocol for vesting and airdrops. A sender locks tokens in a contract and they stream out to the recipient over time, so the recipient can withdraw what has vested.

What is Sablier used for?

Teams use it for token vesting with cliffs, gradual airdrops, grants and payroll. It supports linear schedules, cliffs, monthly unlocks, discrete unlocks and timelocks, and streams can be created in bulk.

Is Sablier safe?

The homepage says the contracts are audited and mentions a security audit, an audit contest and five other auditors. DefiLlama lists two audits. No audit is a guarantee, so review the published reports and the risk notice.

Does Sablier have a token?

No. DefiLlama lists no token for Sablier, and the project does not mention one. Be cautious about any token claiming to be Sablier's.

Which chains does Sablier support?

The homepage says it is live on 24 or more EVM chains, including Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, Optimism, Polygon, BNB Chain and others. DefiLlama also lists Solana among the chains. Check the app for the current list.

How much does Sablier cost?

Sablier says it publishes plan options and fee splits on its pricing page. Public information here do not give specific figures, so check that page before creating streams. You will also pay network gas fees.
