ActiveWise Review 2026: International Account, Fees and Crypto Rules
Wise is a regulated-style international account for sending, holding and spending money in many currencies, not a crypto product. Its main strength is clear, low-cost currency conversion; its main limit is that it does not allow crypto activity.

Our verdict on Wise
8.0/10Wise suits people who send, receive or spend money across currencies and want to see the fee and rate before they pay. Its main strength is clear, low-cost conversion with local account details in many currencies. The main caveat is for crypto users: Wise prohibits buying or trading crypto with the account, and funds are safeguarded rather than covered by a deposit protection scheme. Treat Wise Assets as an investment with capital at risk.

What is Wise?
Wise is an international account for sending, spending and converting money across borders. It is a traditional fintech payment service, not a crypto or DeFi application, so it does not run on a blockchain and does not issue a token of its own.
The company offers personal accounts, business accounts and a platform product that lets banks and enterprises use its network. Its homepage says 18.9 million customers, businesses and banks use it, that the app has 60 million downloads, and that it supports 40+ currencies and transfers to dozens of countries.
Crypto-curious readers should note Wise's stance: its help pages say you cannot use a Wise account to buy, sell or trade cryptocurrencies, and payments to unregulated exchanges or wallets can be rejected. Limited exceptions exist for regulated platforms. Wise is useful as a fiat tool, not as a crypto on-ramp.
How Wise works
Wise is a payment account provider. You fund your account, then either send money to someone abroad or hold and convert balances in different currencies. The calculator shows the exchange rate, the total fee and the amount the recipient gets before you confirm.
The account comes with local bank details in several currencies, so you can be paid like a local, plus a debit card for spending abroad. Wise describes the account as a payment account, with customer funds held in safeguarded, separate accounts rather than lent out by a bank.
If you opt in to Wise Assets, part of your balance is invested through Wise Assets Europe to earn a variable daily return. That is an investment product with capital at risk, separate from ordinary balances and transfers.

Pros and cons
What we like
- Fees are shown before you send, and the homepage example gives a specific total fee.
- Holds and converts 40+ currencies and provides local account details abroad.
- Debit card spends at the mid-market exchange rate, according to Wise.
- Customer funds are held in safeguarded, separate accounts.
- Offers personal, business and bank-facing platform products, with API access for developers.
- Large customer base, with 24/7 support stated on the homepage.
Watch out for
- Crypto is prohibited: Wise's Acceptable Use Policy bars buying, selling or trading crypto, and payments to unregulated exchanges or wallets may be rejected.
- Funds in a Wise current account are safeguarded but not covered by a deposit protection scheme such as the FGD.
- Wise Assets returns are variable and capital is at risk, so the displayed 2.25% rate is not guaranteed.
- Fees still apply on every transfer; the homepage example shows a 6.21 EUR total fee.
- Some customer posts on social forums describe bad support or account problems, and product availability depends on the country you live in.
- Limited fit for people who want to move money on-chain or use DeFi.
Wise fees
Wise says its fees are shown before you confirm a transfer and that there is no subscription for the account. The homepage example shows a total fee of 6.21 EUR included in the sent amount, with a claimed saving of up to 39.53 EUR compared with other providers. That comparison comes from Wise itself.
Transfers above 22,000 EUR or equivalent get a discounted fee. Card, conversion and Wise Assets terms vary by country and are listed on the personal and business pricing pages. The Wise Assets return is a variable rate, not a fee-free guarantee, and capital is at risk.
Is Wise safe?
Wise states that your funds are safeguarded in a separate account in line with its regulatory obligations. It also lists biometrics, two-step authentication, encryption and 7 million daily fraud checks. These are company claims; specific licences by country are not detailed on the homepage.
The key caveat is that a Wise current account is a payment account, so funds are not covered by a deposit protection scheme such as the FGD. Wise Assets is an investment product where capital is at risk. Wise also restricts crypto-related payments under its Acceptable Use Policy, so do not plan to use it to fund unregulated exchanges.

Who Wise is for
Wise is for expats, travellers, freelancers, remote workers and small businesses that move money between currencies. It is also for developers and institutions that want to integrate cross-border payments. It is a poor fit for anyone who plans to buy crypto or fund unregulated exchanges directly from the account.
