Our verdict on Fungies

7.8/10

Fungies suits SaaS founders, game studios and digital creators who want to sell worldwide without handling VAT and sales tax registrations themselves. Its main strength is public sources: storefront, checkout, subscriptions, invoicing and compliance under one flat 5% + 50¢ commission, plus solid developer tooling. The main caveat is dependency and cost. You rely on a single intermediary for payments and payouts, the company publishes no audits or ownership details on its homepage, and high-volume sellers should compare the commission against alternatives.

What is Fungies?

Fungies is a commerce and payments platform for people who sell digital products. It acts as Merchant of Record, which means it handles payments, VAT and sales tax on the seller's behalf. The homepage describes it as tax-compliant payments for everything digital.

It is aimed at SaaS companies, game studios, solo founders and creators selling courses, templates, music or ebooks. The platform bundles a no-code storefront, checkout, subscription billing, invoicing, fraud and chargeback handling, and a dashboard with reporting.

Fungies states that more than 17,000 stores have been created on it, that sellers can reach 150+ countries with 250+ local payment methods, and that payouts are daily. These are the company's own figures. The model is a flat commission of 5% + 50¢ per sale, with no upfront cost.

This is a conventional payments service rather than a crypto dApp. No token, chain or on-chain payment feature is mentioned on its homepage.

How Fungies works

Fungies sits between a digital seller and the buyer. When a customer pays, Fungies is the Merchant of Record, so it collects the payment, calculates and remits VAT, GST or sales tax, and then pays the seller what remains after its commission.

A seller adds products, themes a storefront or embeds checkout, and points customers to it. Checkout comes in three forms: a hosted page, a modal overlay, or an inline embed. Webhooks and an API let the seller's own app grant access when a payment or renewal lands.

The pitch is direct selling. Instead of paying an app store or marketplace a 30% cut, a seller pays a flat commission and keeps the customer relationship. The platform also covers subscriptions, invoices, refunds and customer self-service.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Flat, easy-to-understand pricing of 5% + 50¢ with no upfront cost
  • Takes on VAT, GST and sales tax, removing the need for separate registrations
  • Covers subscriptions, one-off, usage-based and key-based products in one system
  • Strong developer surface: API, webhooks, SDKs, CLI and a WooCommerce plugin
  • Dedicated tools for game studios, including key shops and in-game stores
  • Test Mode and a frequently updated public changelog

Watch out for

  • A flat 5% + 50¢ per sale can cost more than a bare payment processor on small or high-volume sales
  • Tax and compliance coverage is stated as a headline claim; the supported-country detail sits on a separate availability page
  • No public audit, security certification or incident history is published on the homepage
  • Selling through a Merchant of Record means the platform controls checkout, payouts and tax handling, which creates dependency
  • Not a crypto or on-chain product, so it does not suit sellers who want to accept tokens directly
  • Team, ownership and company details are not shown on the homepage

Fungies fees

Fungies lists a single commission of 5% + 50¢ per sale, with no upfront costs and no credit card needed to start. The homepage says storefront, checkout, billing and global tax compliance all sit behind that one commission.

The homepage does not break out payment-method surcharges, currency conversion, payout or dispute fees. Sellers should check the pricing page and help centre pricing documentation before committing.

Is Fungies safe?

Fungies is a custodial payments intermediary: as Merchant of Record it receives buyer payments and then pays sellers. Sellers therefore rely on the company's solvency, payout reliability and compliance practices. The homepage does not publish audits, security certifications or details about the company's ownership.

It does state registration in 27 EU states, the UK and the US for tax purposes, and lists fraud prevention and chargeback management as services. Sellers should read the terms of use, payout conditions and country availability page before moving revenue onto the platform. As this is not a gambling product, age and gambling-law checks do not apply.

Who Fungies is for

Fungies is for sellers of digital goods who would rather not run their own tax compliance: indie SaaS founders, mobile and PC game studios that want to bypass app-store commissions, and creators selling courses, templates or downloads. Developers who want to wire billing into their own product through an API, webhooks or a CLI will also find it relevant.
