Our verdict on Contango V2
7.5/10Contango V2 suits experienced DeFi users who want leveraged staking, points farming or perp-like exposure without looping by hand. Its main strength is automating the flash loan, swap, lend and borrow cycle into one transaction across ten networks. The main caveat is risk: leveraged positions can be liquidated, rely on third-party lending markets, and the fee schedule and audit details are not on the homepage. Beginners should learn how liquidation works first.

What is Contango V2?
Contango V2 is a DeFi protocol that lets users build leveraged positions by looping assets across existing lending markets. It is listed under derivatives and runs on ten networks, including Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base and Optimism. It has been listed since October 2023.
The homepage cites about $3 billion in total volume, $280 million in open interest and 16,000 unique users. These are the project's own figures. Tracked TVL is about $17.3 million, and it rose sharply over the past week.
Use cases include leveraged staking and restaking, points farming, Pendle PT leverage, perp-like long and short trades and interest rate arbitrage. The project has a TANGO token and lists backers, mostly by first name and affiliation.
How Contango V2 works
Looping was traditionally done by hand: deposit an asset, borrow against it, buy more, deposit again. Contango compresses that into one transaction. For a long wstETH/ETH position with ETH as margin, the protocol takes a flash loan of ETH, swaps the margin plus the loan into wstETH on the spot market, and lends the wstETH on a money market. It then borrows ETH against that deposit to repay the flash loan.
The result is a leveraged position held on an existing lending market. Contango does not run its own order book or liquidity pool. It draws on spot liquidity and lending markets, which it puts at around $60B in total.
Because the position is a collateralised loan, it can be liquidated if collateral value falls or debt grows too much relative to it. Traders choose between correlated pairs, where risk is lower, and non-correlated pairs, which behave like leveraged long or short trades.
7 features
Key features
01
One-click looping
A leveraged position is opened in one transaction instead of repeated manual borrow and lend cycles.
02
Leveraged (re)staking
Liquid staking and restaking assets from the ETH and BTC ecosystems can be looped, including many LRT pairs.
03
Points and rewards farming
Points, airdrops and rewards from the underlying lending markets accrue to traders on Contango.
04
Pendle PT leverage
Principal Tokens from Pendle can be looped against their underlying asset or a stablecoin to amplify returns.
05
Perp-like long and short
Looping non-correlated pairs like ETH/USDC gives long or short exposure similar to a perp, with implied funding set by lending rates.
06
Interest rate arbitrage
Delta-neutral positions can profit from rate differences between lending markets, with a USD Farming tab for stable pairs.
07
Multi-chain support
The app is available on ten networks, including Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base and Optimism.
Pros and cons
What we like
- Automates a multi-step looping process into one transaction.
- Supports ten networks, including Ethereum and major layer 2s.
- Covers varied strategies: leveraged staking, Pendle PTs, long and short, rate arbitrage.
- Points and rewards from underlying markets accrue to users.
- Uses existing lending and spot liquidity rather than a separate pool.
- Homepage states core contracts and integrations were audited, plus an operational security audit.
Watch out for
- Leverage can lead to fast liquidation if the collateral price moves against the position or borrow rates rise.
- Positions depend on third-party lending markets, so a problem in an underlying market affects Contango users too.
- Each trade uses flash loans and spot swaps, adding smart-contract and slippage risk compared with a simple deposit.
- Audit firm names and reports are not listed on the homepage; users must check the docs.
- Team identities are not stated on the homepage, which names only backers by first name and affiliation.
- Claims such as funding rates 3x lower than major venues come from the project's own study and should be verified independently.
Contango V2 fees
Contango does not publish a fee schedule on its homepage. Users should check the docs and the trade confirmation screen in the app for protocol fees before opening a position.
Costs in practice also include the borrow rate on the underlying lending market, swap slippage on the spot leg, and network gas fees. The project says its implied funding rates are around 3x lower than those of major venues, based on its own study.
Is Contango V2 safe?
The homepage says the core contracts and all integrations have been audited with leading security partners, and that an operational security audit was also done. DefiLlama lists two audits. The audit firm names are not on the homepage, so readers should read the audit page in the docs.
Risks remain: smart-contract bugs, dependence on third-party lending markets and DEX liquidity, oracle behaviour, and liquidation of leveraged positions. Contango is non-custodial in design as users interact from their own wallet, but approvals should be managed carefully. This is not financial advice and leveraged trading can lose the full margin.

Contango V2 FAQs
What is looping on Contango?
Looping means repeatedly borrowing and lending an asset to build leverage. Contango automates the steps in a single transaction using a flash loan, a spot swap, a deposit into a lending market and a borrow to repay the flash loan.
Is Contango the same as a perpetual futures exchange?
Not exactly. Positions are built on lending markets rather than an order book or a perpetual futures contract. For non-correlated pairs such as ETH/USDC, the project says the result resembles a perp, with implied funding rates it describes as lower than major venues.
Which networks does Contango support?
The project lists Arbitrum, Ethereum, Base, Optimism, Avalanche, Gnosis, Polygon, BNB Chain, Scroll and Linea. Which markets are available on each network is shown in the app.
Does Contango have a token?
Yes. Contango has a token called TANGO. the public information available here do not describe its exact utility, so check the project docs for current details.
Is Contango audited?
The homepage says the core contracts and integrations have been audited and that an operational security audit was also done. An audit lowers risk but does not remove it, and leveraged positions can still be liquidated.
Can I earn points and rewards while looping?
The project says rewards, airdrops and points offered by the underlying markets accrue to traders using Contango. Availability varies by market and pair.
