Hyperliquid Review 2026: An Onchain Perps Exchange on Its Own L1

Hyperliquid is a Layer-1 blockchain built around a fully onchain perpetuals and spot exchange. It suits experienced traders who accept derivatives risk, and the main caveat is leverage plus limited published audit and fee detail.

Our verdict on Hyperliquid

7.8/10

Hyperliquid suits experienced traders who want leveraged perpetuals and spot markets traded from their own wallet, plus a broad market list that now includes commodities, indices and real-world assets. Its main strength is a fully onchain, non-custodial exchange on a chain built for speed. The main caveat is risk: leverage can wipe out a position quickly, and the sources do not publish a fee schedule, audit reports or team details. Beginners should start small or avoid derivatives entirely.

What is Hyperliquid?

Hyperliquid is a Layer-1 blockchain best known for its flagship decentralized exchange, which offers perpetual futures and spot trading. Its own description is 300+ perpetual and spot markets, fully onchain, non-custodial and open 24/7. One source reports it launched in 2023.

Beyond the exchange, the ecosystem supports borrowing, lending, real-world assets and an Ethereum-compatible environment. The project positions itself as infrastructure for all finance: builders keep their own users, and Hyperliquid supplies liquidity and execution underneath.

HYPE is the native token, with a maximum supply of 1 billion. It is used for staking and securing the network through delegation to validators.

How Hyperliquid works

Hyperliquid runs its own Layer-1 blockchain, secured by HyperBFT, a delegated proof-of-stake consensus. HYPE holders delegate tokens to validators, and an active set of 24 validators, chosen by stake, commits transactions. More than two-thirds of total stake must agree to commit each round.

The exchange sits on that chain. Order books and matching happen onchain, so orders, trades and liquidations are recorded on the ledger instead of a company's private matching engine. A perpetual future is a contract that tracks an asset's price with no expiry date, usually with leverage, and funding payments keep it close to the spot price.

The chain also supports an EVM, borrowing and lending, and real-world-asset markets. Hyperliquid describes this as shared liquidity and execution that outside builders can use to serve their own users.

7 features

Key features

01

Onchain perpetuals and spot

Perpetual futures and spot markets, with order books and matching run onchain rather than on a private server. Trading is available 24/7.

02

Wide market selection

Hyperliquid describes 300+ markets covering crypto, commodities, indices and more. Trading in real-world-asset markets has grown, with one post from the project citing a record $2.6B in open interest.

03

Non-custodial trading

Users trade from their own wallets rather than depositing funds with a central operator, which is the core difference from a centralized exchange.

04

HyperBFT consensus

HyperBFT is a delegated proof-of-stake consensus built for latency and throughput. One source cites roughly 200,000 transactions per second and a 0.07-second block time.

05

EVM and lending ecosystem

The ecosystem also supports borrowing, lending and a full Ethereum Virtual Machine, so developers can build apps on the same chain as the exchange.

06

Builder-focused infrastructure

The project pitches itself as infrastructure where builders own their users while Hyperliquid supplies liquidity and execution.

07

HYPE staking and validators

HYPE holders delegate to validators. An active set of 24 validators is chosen by stake, and a 7-day unstaking queue is meant to deter consensus attacks.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Fully onchain order books and matching make activity transparent
  • Non-custodial design means you trade from your own wallet
  • Broad market list of 300+ perpetual and spot markets, including commodities, indices and RWA exposure
  • Runs 24/7 on its own chain built for speed
  • EVM support and lending give developers and traders more to use on one chain

Watch out for

  • Leveraged perpetual futures can lead to fast, total losses, and liquidations are automatic
  • Fee schedule, audit reports and team details are not stated in the sources reviewed
  • Consensus runs on a small active set of 24 validators, so decentralization is a fair question
  • HYPE price and token unlocks can swing sharply, which affects staking value
  • Impersonation and phishing scams using the Hyperliquid name are being reported on social forums
  • Regulatory treatment of onchain derivatives varies by country and may restrict access

Hyperliquid fees

Hyperliquid is described as offering low fees, but the sources reviewed do not publish a fee schedule, so no maker, taker or funding rates are quoted here. Those numbers are shown in the trading interface and the project's documentation.

For a perpetuals venue, total cost usually includes trading fees, funding payments between longs and shorts, and the price impact of large orders. Network-level costs for moving assets onto the chain are also separate. Check each before you trade.

Is Hyperliquid safe?

Hyperliquid is non-custodial, so there is no exchange account holding your funds. The remaining risks are smart-contract and protocol bugs, validator concentration, bridge or deposit risks, and market risk from leverage. The sources reviewed do not mention audits, bug bounties or a security incident history, so check the project's documentation before depositing.

Regulatory status is not stated in the sources. Online reports also show scammers using the Hyperliquid name, so confirm you are on the genuine site and never share your seed phrase. Derivatives trading is risky and not suitable for everyone; confirm it is legal where you live and that you are of legal age.

6 steps

How to get started with Hyperliquid

  1. 1

Find the official Hyperliquid site through the project's verified social channels, not through ads or public reporting alone, to avoid impersonators.

  2. 2

Set up a self-custody wallet and secure the seed phrase offline.

  3. 3

Move funds onto the platform using the supported deposit route shown in the app, starting with a small amount.

  4. 4

Review the fee tiers, leverage limits and liquidation rules for the market you want to trade.

  5. 5

Place a small spot trade or a low-leverage position first, and set your own risk limits.

  6. 6

If you want to stake HYPE, read how delegation and the 7-day unstaking queue work before delegating.

Who Hyperliquid is for

Hyperliquid is for traders comfortable with perpetual futures, leverage and self-custody wallets who prefer an onchain venue to a centralized exchange. It also suits developers interested in building on a chain that shares exchange liquidity, and HYPE holders who want to stake. It is a poor fit for newcomers who do not yet understand liquidation risk.
