What Worldcoin is
Worldcoin is a project built around World ID, a digital credential meant to show that a person online is a real and unique human. Since a rebrand in October 2024 the project has mostly gone by the name World, although the token still trades as Worldcoin (WLD). Public reporting names Sam Altman, who is also CEO of OpenAI, and Alex Blania as co-founders.
The system works like this. A person downloads a wallet app that can create a World ID, then visits a physical device called the Orb. Orbs are run by independent local businesses known as Orb Operators. The Orb uses multispectral sensors to check that the person is human and has not enrolled before. According to the project, images are deleted on the device by default unless the person explicitly agrees to Data Custody. World ID then relies on zero-knowledge proofs, so a user can prove they are a unique human to a platform without handing over personal details.
The stated mission is to build a large identity and financial network run as a public utility. WLD is the token tied to that network.
What WLD is used for
The project's own materials describe WLD as a way for holders to take part in governing the Worldcoin protocol, alongside World ID. Other sources describe it as the unit used for fees, grants and governance in the wider system, and as a token that can pay gas fees on World Chain, the network where it is native.
The project's description also says Orb-verified World ID holders are entitled to claim WLD, which is how many people first receive the token. The larger idea behind World ID is that apps can use it to resist bots and sybil attacks, run fairer airdrops or token sales, and support voting methods such as quadratic voting. The project also floats longer-term ideas about government programs and AI-funded universal basic income. These are stated ambitions rather than established outcomes.
Beyond governance, fees and rewards, the utility of WLD depends on how many apps and users adopt World ID and World Chain. Readers should treat the broader vision as aspirational until it shows up in actual use.
Supply and tokenomics
WLD has a maximum supply of 10 billion tokens, and the total supply matches that figure. As of 2026-11-05, about 3.74 billion WLD were circulating, which is roughly 37% of the maximum. The market cap was about $1.38B, while the fully diluted valuation, which assumes all 10 billion tokens exist at today's price, was about $3.69B.
That gap matters. Tokens not yet in circulation are scheduled to be released over time, which can add selling pressure if demand does not keep pace. The data given here does not include the allocation split or the unlock schedule, so check the project's published tokenomics documentation for the exact breakdown among the community, the founding company and investors.
At the time of writing, WLD ranked around 65th by market cap. The price was about $0.37, down roughly 11% over seven days and about 47% over one year. Its all-time high was about $11.74 in March 2024, and its all-time low was about $0.23 in May 2026. Trading volume over 24 hours was around $243M.
Chains and how it is held or traded
WLD is an ERC-20 token issued on Ethereum, and it also exists on Optimism and on World Chain. World Chain is an Ethereum layer-2 network linked to the Optimism Superchain ecosystem, and WLD is its native token for gas payments.
Most people hold WLD in one of two ways. The first is the World App, the wallet the project provides for creating a World ID and claiming tokens. The second is a self-custody wallet that supports Ethereum-compatible networks. WLD is also listed on a number of centralized exchanges, where it can be traded against stablecoins and major cryptocurrencies.
Because the same token exists on several networks, check which network you are using before sending anything. Sending WLD to an address on the wrong chain, or to an exchange that does not support that network, can mean the funds are delayed or lost. Always send a small test amount first, and confirm that the contract address matches the one the project publishes.
History and notable events
The project began as Worldcoin, and its token distribution to Orb-verified users drew wide attention. WLD reached its all-time high in March 2024, then fell sharply. In October 2024 the project rebranded to World. Search coverage from September 2025 notes a sharp price rise at that point, but the data here shows the token later fell to a new low in May 2026.
The backers named in the data include well-known venture investors such as Andreessen Horowitz, Multicoin Capital, Blockchain Capital and Coinbase Ventures. Having these backers says nothing about future performance.
The project has also been called controversial in press coverage, mainly over its collection of biometric data. Privacy regulators in several countries have looked into it. The data supplied does not list specific rulings or dates, so check recent news for the current legal position in your region.
Key risks
Price risk. WLD has been very volatile, and a large part of its supply is still to be released, which can weigh on the price.
Privacy and regulatory risk. Iris scanning raises concerns about biometric data, consent and how securely it is held. Regulators in various jurisdictions have questioned the model, and access to the Orb or the token may be restricted in some places.
Adoption risk. The value of World ID depends on outside apps and institutions choosing to use it. If they do not, demand for WLD may stay mostly speculative.
Governance risk. Although WLD is described as a governance token, practical control may be concentrated with the founding team and large holders.
Technical and scam risk. Fake airdrops, phishing sites and impersonation of World App support are common around popular tokens. This page is not financial advice, and nothing here predicts future prices.
How to store WLD safely
For small amounts, a reputable wallet app is usually enough. For larger holdings, a hardware wallet that supports Ethereum-compatible networks gives stronger protection, because your private keys stay offline.
Write down your recovery phrase on paper or metal and keep it somewhere private and secure. Never type it into a website, share it in a chat, or store it as a photo or in cloud notes. No genuine support team will ask for it.
Before approving any transaction, check the network, the contract address and the permissions requested. Revoke token approvals you no longer need. If you use the World App, protect the device with a strong passcode and keep the software updated. Keep in mind that a World ID is tied to your identity in a way a normal wallet is not, so think carefully before sharing biometric data and read the project's data policy first.
By the numbers
Worldcoin in numbers
Worldcoin (WLD) is ranked #66 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $1.29B and a price of $0.3452 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation is $3.45B, so roughly 37% of the eventual supply is in circulation today; tokens still to be released could add selling pressure.
The price was down 12.7% over 7 days, down 34.9% over 30 days, down 52.3% over the past year. It trades about 97% below its all-time high of $11.74, set on Mar 9, 2024.
About 3.74B WLD are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 10B (37% issued).
24-hour trading volume was about $244M, or 19% of its market cap: high turnover.
WLD is the native token of World Chain; it also has token contracts on 2 chains we track, including Ethereum, Optimism. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

WLD FAQs
Is Worldcoin the same as World?
Worldcoin rebranded to World in October 2024, and the wider project now goes by that name. The token is still commonly listed as Worldcoin with the ticker WLD, so you will see both names in use.
What is WLD used for?
WLD is described as a governance token and the unit used for fees and grants in the World ecosystem. It can pay gas fees on World Chain, and Orb-verified users can claim it. Its wider utility depends on how many apps adopt World ID.
What is the maximum supply of WLD?
The maximum supply is 10 billion WLD. As of 2026-11-05, about 3.74 billion were in circulation, so most of the supply is still to be released over time.
Which blockchains does WLD run on?
WLD is an ERC-20 token issued on Ethereum, and it also exists on Optimism and World Chain. World Chain is the network for which it is the native token.
Is the Worldcoin iris scan safe?
