What Tezos is

Tezos is a proof-of-stake layer 1 blockchain that runs smart contracts and hosts applications and digital assets. Its native token is XTZ. The project's own description stresses three things: code security, on-chain governance, and broad participation in running the network.

Two design choices set it apart from many other chains. The first is that the protocol can amend itself. Stakeholders propose and vote on upgrades, and approved changes are applied to the network without a hard fork that splits the chain. The second is an early focus on formal verification, a method of mathematically checking that code behaves as intended. This suits contracts that handle money and leave little room for bugs.

Tezos uses a variant of proof of stake called Liquid Proof of Stake. Any holder can take part in securing the network, either directly or by delegating their coins to another participant. XTZ is not mined with computing hardware. Newly issued tokens go to those who help secure the chain.

The project's roadmap material talks about scalability through layer 2 systems, better composability between applications, and support for mainstream programming languages. Treat these as stated goals rather than guarantees.

What XTZ is used for

XTZ has three main jobs on the Tezos network.

Fees. Transactions and smart contract calls cost a small amount of XTZ, which pays for the work of processing them.

Staking and delegation. Holders can help secure the network. Those who run the validating infrastructure are often called bakers. Holders who do not want to run anything can delegate their balance to a baker and receive a share of the rewards, typically after the baker takes a fee. Delegation does not usually mean handing over custody of the coins, since the delegator keeps control of the keys. Exchanges also offer staking services, which work differently because the exchange holds the coins.

Governance. XTZ holders take part in the on-chain amendment process by voting on protocol upgrade proposals, directly or through their delegate. This is why Tezos sits in the governance token category as well as the layer 1 category.

XTZ is also traded on exchanges, like most large crypto assets. Beyond these functions, the public information available do not point to any other built-in role for the token.

Supply and tokenomics

As of 2026-11-05, about 1.10 billion XTZ were in circulation, out of a total supply of roughly 1.12 billion. The data lists no fixed maximum supply, so there is no hard cap in the way Bitcoin has one. The total can grow over time through protocol issuance, which is how staking rewards are paid.

At the time of writing, XTZ traded at about $0.28, giving a market capitalisation of about $308 million and a fully diluted valuation of about $313 million. That put it near rank 132 by market cap. Daily trading volume was about $38 million. Because circulating and total supply are close together, there is little gap between market cap and fully diluted value.

For context on price history, the all-time high was about $9.12 on 2021-10-03. The all-time low in the data was about $0.19 on 2026-08-12, only a few months before this snapshot. The token was up about 6% over the previous seven days but down about 43% over the previous year. These figures move constantly and are given for orientation only, not as a signal about what comes next.

The details of the current issuance schedule are set by the protocol and can be changed through governance, so check current documentation if exact inflation matters to you.

Chains, holding and trading

XTZ is the native token of the Tezos chain itself. It is not a token issued on another network, although wrapped versions of many assets exist on other chains through bridges and third-party issuers. Those wrappers carry extra risk from the bridge or issuer.

On Tezos, accounts have addresses that begin with tz, and smart contract addresses begin with KT. You can hold XTZ in a self-custody wallet, where you control the keys, or on a centralised exchange, where the exchange does. Wallets that have supported Tezos include Temple, Kukai and hardware devices such as Ledger, though support and features change, so confirm before sending funds.

XTZ is listed on many large centralised exchanges, which is where most trading takes place. Some decentralised exchanges and applications on Tezos also let users swap tokens, trade NFTs and use other on-chain services. The chain has been used for NFT marketplaces and art projects in the past, with Hic et Nunc and objkt being known examples.

Tezos has also worked on layer 2 approaches. Its smart rollup technology allows other execution environments to settle on Tezos, and an EVM-compatible network called Etherlink has been built on it. These are separate networks with their own risks and tooling.

History and notable events

Tezos was first described in a 2014 white paper by Arthur and Kathleen Breitman, who published it under the pseudonym L.M. Goodman. The name was a reference to a journalist who had wrongly identified Bitcoin's creator. Their earlier writing argued that Bitcoin lacked a governance process that could take in contributions from its community.

The project raised money through a public fundraiser in 2017, before the mainnet existed. It was followed by public disputes between the founders and the foundation that was meant to oversee the effort, which delayed the launch. The Tezos mainnet then went live in 2018.

The project's own account says the mainnet has run without interruption since then. Over the years the network has gone through a series of protocol upgrades decided by the governance process, which is the main practical example of the self-amending design.

The token's market history has been volatile. After peaking in 2021, the price fell sharply and hit a new all-time low in August 2026. The project is described in some data sources as a US-founded venture-backed protocol, and it appears in several index and portfolio listings. Those are classifications, not endorsements.

Risks to understand

XTZ carries the usual risks of a mid-cap crypto asset, plus some specific to the chain.

Price risk. The token fell about 43% over the year to 2026-11-05 and set an all-time low in August 2026. It could fall further. Only hold what you can afford to lose.

Competition. Tezos competes with larger smart contract platforms for developers, users and liquidity. A smaller ecosystem can mean thinner markets and fewer applications.

Governance and upgrade risk. On-chain voting is open, but turnout, delegate concentration and the quality of proposals all affect outcomes. A flawed upgrade could cause problems even with careful review.

Inflation. With no fixed supply cap, staking rewards dilute holders who do not stake or delegate.

Delegation and bridge risk. A poorly run baker can earn less or lose rewards. Bridged or wrapped XTZ on other chains depends on the security of the bridge. Layer 2 networks are younger than the base chain and may carry more technical risk.

Scams. Fake wallets, airdrop messages and fraudulent token listings target users of every chain. Nothing here is investment advice.

How to store XTZ safely

The safest general approach is to control your own keys. If you leave XTZ on an exchange, you rely on that company's security and solvency, and withdrawals can be frozen.

For larger amounts, a hardware wallet keeps the private keys offline. Pair it with a reputable wallet app that supports Tezos, and install apps only from the official source. Write your recovery phrase on paper or metal, store it offline in more than one secure place, and never type it into a website, share it in chat, or photograph it. No legitimate support team will ask for it.

Before sending a large amount, send a small test transaction first and check that the address begins with tz and matches exactly what you meant to paste. Clipboard-swapping malware can alter addresses.

If you delegate, choose a baker based on reliability, fee level and how transparent they are about payouts. Delegating normally leaves the funds in your wallet, but check how your chosen wallet handles it. Revoke or review any permissions you grant to decentralised applications, and be wary of unsolicited tokens or NFTs that arrive in your wallet, as interacting with them can be a way to attack you.

By the numbers

Tezos in numbers

Tezos (XTZ) is ranked #137 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $281M and a price of $0.2552 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($286M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.

The price was down 0.8% over 7 days, down 18.8% over 30 days, down 51.7% over the past year. It trades about 97% below its all-time high of $9.12, set on Oct 3, 2021.

About 1.1B XTZ are in circulation, from a total supply of 1.12B. No hard maximum supply is listed.

24-hour trading volume was about $48.8M, or 17% of its market cap: high turnover.

XTZ is the native token of Tezos. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

XTZ FAQs

What is Tezos (XTZ)?

Tezos is a blockchain platform for applications and digital assets, and XTZ is its native token. XTZ pays network fees, can be staked or delegated to help secure the chain, and lets holders vote on protocol upgrades.

Does XTZ have a maximum supply?

No fixed maximum supply is listed in the data. As of 2026-11-05, about 1.10 billion XTZ were circulating out of roughly 1.12 billion in total. New tokens are issued through the protocol to reward those who secure the network, so supply can grow.

Can I stake XTZ?

Yes. Tezos uses Liquid Proof of Stake, so you can delegate your XTZ to a baker, which is a validator, and receive a share of rewards. The tokens normally stay in your wallet. Rewards and fees vary by baker, and exchanges that offer staking handle things differently.

What does self-amending mean for Tezos?

Tezos has an on-chain process where holders vote on protocol upgrade proposals. If one is approved, the network adopts it without splitting into two chains. That is why it is often called a self-amending blockchain.

Who created Tezos and when did it launch?

It was proposed in a 2014 white paper by Arthur and Kathleen Breitman, who used the pseudonym L.M. Goodman. The mainnet launched in 2018 after a 2017 fundraiser and a period of disputes over the project's oversight.

Why is the XTZ price so far below its all-time high?

The data shows about $0.28 as of 2026-11-05, which is about 43% lower than a year earlier and well below the 2021 all-time high of about $9.12. Crypto prices swing widely and this page makes no prediction about where XTZ goes next.

What is the market cap of Tezos?

As of Nov 6, 2026, Tezos had a market cap of about $281M, ranking #137 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.

What is the all-time high of XTZ?

Tezos's all-time high is $9.12, reached on Oct 3, 2021. Its all-time low is $0.1918 (Aug 12, 2026). Past prices say nothing about future returns.

What is the circulating supply of XTZ?

As of Nov 6, 2026, about 1.1B XTZ were in circulation; no fixed maximum supply is listed.

Which blockchains is XTZ on?

XTZ is the native token of Tezos.
