ENS Token: What It Is, Uses, Supply and Risks
ENS is the governance token of the Ethereum Name Service, the system behind.eth names. It lets holders vote on how the DAO and protocol are run, and it is separate from the cost of registering a name.

What ENS is
The Ethereum Name Service, or ENS, is a naming system built on Ethereum. It maps human-readable names such as alice.eth to machine-readable data: wallet addresses on Ethereum and other chains, content hashes for decentralized websites, and profile metadata. It also supports reverse resolution, so an address can point back to a primary name.
ENS has similar goals to the internet's DNS but a different architecture. Names are hierarchical and dot-separated. Top-level domains like.eth are owned by smart contracts called registrars, which set the rules for handing out names. Whoever owns a name controls its subdomains, so the owner of alice.eth can create pay.alice.eth and configure it freely. ENS can also import DNS names that a user already owns.
The ENS token (symbol ENS) is separate from the names themselves. It is a governance token, and it does not work as a payment method inside the naming system. Wallets, explorers and dApps that show a readable name instead of a long hexadecimal address are using the naming protocol, not the token.
What the ENS token is used for
The ENS token exists mainly for governance. Holders can vote on proposals for the ENS DAO, the community organization that oversees the protocol. Proposals can cover how the DAO treasury is spent, changes to protocol contracts and parameters, and who steers certain working groups. Holders can vote with their own tokens or delegate voting power to another address.
It helps to be clear about what the token is not. Registering or renewing a.eth name is a function of the naming protocol and is paid in ETH, not in ENS. Owning the token does not give you a name, and owning a name does not give you the token. The token's value to a holder comes down to the influence it carries in the DAO and whatever the market assigns to that influence.
Our categories list ENS under NFT tokens and governance tokens. The NFT label reflects the fact that.eth names are represented as NFTs on Ethereum, while the governance label describes the token itself.
Supply and tokenomics
The total and maximum supply of ENS is 100 million tokens. At the time of writing, about 42.3 million were counted as circulating, which is roughly 42% of the total. The rest is locked or held in the DAO treasury and vesting schedules, so more tokens enter circulation over time.
Publicly, the allocation was set out at launch as three broad parts: a share distributed to past users of ENS through an airdrop, a large share reserved for the DAO community treasury, and a share for the core contributors and early team that vests over several years. Check the official ENS documentation and governance forum for exact percentages and unlock schedules before relying on them.
As of 2026-11-05, the data shows a price of about $5, a market capitalization of about $211.5 million and a fully diluted valuation of about $499.9 million. The gap between those two figures reflects the tokens not yet circulating. Trading volume over 24 hours was about $11.6 million, and the token ranked around 163 by market cap.
Chains, holding and trading
ENS is issued on Ethereum and is not the native coin of any chain. It is a standard token on Ethereum mainnet, so any wallet that supports Ethereum tokens can hold it, including browser extension wallets, mobile wallets and hardware wallets. Gas fees for transfers and votes are paid in ETH.
In general terms, ENS trades on centralized exchanges and on decentralized exchanges that list Ethereum tokens. Liquidity and spreads vary between venues, so check the pair and the contract address before swapping. Wrapped or bridged versions may exist on other networks, and they are different assets from the original token.
If you want to vote, you usually delegate your tokens first, either to yourself or to a delegate you trust. Delegation is recorded on-chain, and it lets the token count in DAO votes without moving it out of your wallet. Voting itself typically happens through the Tally interface and related governance tools, with some steps handled off-chain and others on-chain depending on the proposal.
History and notable events
ENS grew out of work on naming on Ethereum and became widely used for.eth names. The token arrived in November 2021, when ENS handed governance to a DAO and distributed tokens to people who had used the service. The all-time high of about $83.40 was recorded on 2021-11-10, close to that launch period.
Since then the price has fallen a long way. At the time of writing, the data shows a change of about -59.7% over one year and about -3.9% over seven days. The all-time low of about $3.77 was recorded on 2026-08-18, so the token has been trading near its lows recently.
The launch date field is not filled in our data, so treat the month above as general public history rather than a precise record. Governance decisions, treasury spending and protocol upgrades have continued through the DAO since launch. For the details of specific proposals, read the governance forum rather than relying on summaries.
Risks to understand
Market risk comes first. ENS has fallen sharply from its peak and can move quickly in either direction. Daily volume is modest compared with its fully diluted valuation, so large orders can move the price, particularly on thin venues.
Supply risk matters too. Because only part of the total supply is circulating, future unlocks could add selling pressure. Governance risk is also real: voting power can concentrate among large holders or delegates, and DAO decisions may not match the interests of smaller holders. Participation in votes is often low.
There is also dependency risk. ENS relies on Ethereum and on its own smart contracts, which carry the usual possibility of bugs or exploits even after audits. The token's value is tied to the demand for names and the DAO's direction, and neither is guaranteed. Scam tokens that copy the ENS name or symbol exist on Ethereum, and phishing sites that imitate ENS tools target holders, so verify contract addresses with official sources. Nothing here is investment advice.
How to store ENS safely
Because ENS is an ordinary Ethereum token, you can store it in any wallet that supports Ethereum. For anything beyond a small amount, a hardware wallet keeps the private keys offline and is generally considered the safer option. Write your recovery phrase on paper, keep it offline, and never type it into a website or share it with anyone.
Be careful with approvals. Connecting a wallet to a dApp can grant it permission to move your tokens, so review what you sign and revoke old approvals you no longer need. Delegating votes does not require you to send your tokens anywhere, so be wary of any site that asks you to.
A separate wallet for everyday dApp use, with your longer-term holdings in another, limits the damage if one is compromised. If you also own.eth names, remember that names and the token are separate assets, and each needs protecting. Double-check addresses before sending, since blockchain transfers cannot be reversed.
By the numbers
Ethereum Name Service in numbers
Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is ranked #169 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $194M and a price of $4.59 as of Nov 7, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation is $459M, so roughly 42% of the eventual supply is in circulation today; tokens still to be released could add selling pressure.
The price was down 7.6% over 7 days, down 30.5% over 30 days, down 64.8% over the past year. It trades about 94% below its all-time high of $83.40, set on Nov 10, 2021.
About 42.31M ENS are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 100M (42% issued).
24-hour trading volume was about $8.53M, or 4.4% of its market cap: moderate turnover.
ENS has token contracts on Ethereum. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.
