What Polkadot is

Polkadot is a blockchain network designed to let many separate chains work together. Instead of one chain trying to do everything, Polkadot connects chains that can each have their own rules, features and purpose. They exchange messages, including value, without needing to trust a middleman, and they share one pool of security.

The project describes itself as heterogeneous, meaning it makes no assumptions about how a connected chain is built. Chains that plug in were originally called parachains, and the project says even non-blockchain data structures could qualify if they meet certain criteria. Many of these chains are built with Substrate, a development framework from Parity Technologies.

A useful comparison is a group of independent chains, such as Ethereum, Bitcoin and others, that could talk to each other and lean on the same security backbone. That is the idea behind the phrases "shared security" and "interoperability" you will see in Polkadot material. Data aggregators group DOT under smart contract platforms, proof of stake and Layer 0 networks, and also under governance.

What DOT is used for

DOT is the native token of the Polkadot network, and public explainers describe several roles for it.

Staking. Holders can lock DOT to help secure the network and earn rewards. Staking ties economic value to honest behaviour, since validators who act badly can be penalised.

Governance. DOT holders can vote on proposals that change the network, including upgrades and how funds are spent. This is why DOT sits in a governance token category.

Bonding and network access. Historically, projects bonded or locked DOT to lease a parachain slot and get a connection to the network. More recent descriptions also mention coretime, a way for teams to buy computing capacity on the network, and transaction fees paid in DOT.

In short, DOT is both a security deposit and a voting right, and it is also the unit used to pay for some network services. It is not a claim on any company's profits, and its usefulness depends on how much activity the network attracts.

Supply and tokenomics

As of 2026-11-05, the data we track shows about 1.71 billion DOT in circulation. The total supply figure in the same data matches the circulating figure, and a maximum of 2.1 billion is listed. Because of this, fully diluted valuation and market capitalisation are both about $1.59 billion.

At the time of writing, DOT trades at roughly $0.93, which places it around rank 56 by market capitalisation. Reported 24-hour trading volume is about $134.8 million. These figures move constantly, so treat them as a snapshot.

Supply is only part of the picture. Staking rewards have historically created new DOT, and the issuance rules have been a subject of community governance votes. A listed maximum on a data aggregator may not capture every detail of how new tokens are created, so check the official Polkadot documentation for the current issuance schedule before drawing conclusions.

The data does not give a reliable breakdown of initial allocations, so we do not speculate on that here.

Chains, holding and trading

DOT lives natively on the Polkadot network. Our data lists no separate chains for which it is the native token and no other chains it is issued on, although a market-data category label suggests a Base-native representation also exists. If you come across a DOT-labelled token on another chain, check whether it is a wrapped or bridged version, because those carry extra risk from the bridge or issuer.

Most people get DOT through centralised exchanges, where it trades against stablecoins and major cryptocurrencies. It is also listed in several well-known crypto index products, which tends to keep it widely available. Trading volume of roughly $134.8 million over 24 hours, as of 2026-11-05, suggests active but not enormous liquidity.

To hold DOT yourself, you move it to a wallet that supports the Polkadot network. From there you can stake it, vote in governance or send it. Staking usually involves a waiting period before you can withdraw, so confirm the current terms in your wallet before locking funds.

History and notable events

Our data does not include a verified launch date, so we do not give one here. What the data does show is the price journey. DOT reached an all-time high of about $54.98 on 2021-11-04, during the broader crypto market peak that year.

The decline since then has been steep. As of 2026-11-05, DOT is down about 62.5% over the past year and about 4% over the past week. Its all-time low of about $0.73 was recorded on 2026-08-18, so the token is trading only modestly above that level at the time of writing. This is a description of past movement and not a forecast.

On the technology side, the project's own material has shifted over time. Early descriptions focused on leasing parachain slots, while newer descriptions mention coretime as a way to access the network. This reflects an evolving design that has been shaped by community governance. We have no verified details about specific partnerships or events beyond what is stated in the project description.

Risks to understand

Price risk. DOT has lost most of its value from its 2021 peak, and crypto assets can fall sharply with little warning. Only put in money you could afford to lose.

Adoption risk. Polkadot's value case depends on developers building chains and applications that use its shared security. If activity stays low or moves to competing networks, demand for DOT may suffer.

Governance and issuance risk. Rules for rewards, supply and spending can change through votes, so what is true today may not hold later.

Staking risk. Locked tokens can be hard to sell quickly, and validators that misbehave can lead to penalties for those who back them.

Technical and bridge risk. Software bugs, smart contract flaws and bridged or wrapped versions of DOT add layers of risk.

Scam risk. Fake airdrops, phishing sites and impersonators target crypto users. Nobody legitimate will ask for your recovery phrase.

How to store DOT safely

The safest basic approach is to keep DOT in a wallet where you control the keys, rather than leaving large amounts on an exchange. Exchanges can be hacked, freeze withdrawals or fail, and tokens held there are technically the exchange's obligation to you.

For larger holdings, a hardware wallet that supports Polkadot keeps your private keys offline. Check the wallet's current compatibility list before buying, and purchase directly from the manufacturer to avoid tampered devices.

When you set up any wallet, you will receive a recovery phrase. Write it on paper or metal, store it in more than one secure place and never photograph it or save it in cloud notes or email. Anyone with the phrase can take your funds.

Before sending a large transfer, send a small test amount first and double-check the address and network. If you stake, read the current unbonding period and fees in your wallet, since they can change. Stay wary of unsolicited messages, and only use official software downloaded from sources you have verified.

By the numbers

Polkadot in numbers
