What XRP is
XRP is the native digital asset of the XRP Ledger, a Layer 1 blockchain built mainly for payments and settlement. The ledger runs without mining and without staking. Instead, it relies on a federated consensus process in which a list of trusted validators, called the Unique Node List, must reach about 80 percent agreement before a transaction is permanently recorded. Once that happens, the result is final, and settlement typically takes three to five seconds.
The project's description puts sustained throughput at around 1,500 transactions per second. The ledger also includes a built-in decentralized exchange, so tokenized assets can be traded on-chain without a separate intermediary.
XRP is closely linked to Ripple, the company that grew out of the project's early development and works with financial institutions on payment products. The two are not the same thing, though. The XRP Ledger is an open network, and XRP is the asset that keeps it running. As of 2026-11-05, XRP ranks fifth by market capitalization, at roughly $82.39B, with a price of about $1.30.
What the token is used for
XRP has a few distinct jobs. The first is protective. Every transaction on the XRP Ledger burns a very small amount of XRP, which makes spamming the network costly and slowly removes a tiny amount of supply from circulation.
The second is as a bridge asset for payments. The idea is that XRP can sit between two currencies, such as one fiat currency and another, so that institutions do not have to keep pre-funded accounts in every destination currency. Project materials say this can lower liquidity costs and speed up cross-border settlement. Use of XRP in this role is described as optional for the institutions that work with Ripple.
The third is as collateral. Institutions can use XRP to access traditional markets and to manage digital asset infrastructure, according to the project description.
In day-to-day practice, most people who hold XRP do so as an investment or to trade it, not to move money across borders. How much real payment volume runs through XRP as a bridge is a separate question from its market activity, and the two should not be confused.
Supply and tokenomics
All 100 billion XRP were created when the ledger launched, and the maximum supply is fixed at 100 billion. There is no mining or staking reward that creates new coins. As of 2026-11-05, the circulating supply is about 63.35 billion, while the total supply is about 99.99 billion. The gap between the two is mostly coins not yet counted as circulating, and the total is slightly below the maximum because of the small fee burns over time.
The fully diluted valuation, which prices the whole 100 billion at the current rate, is about $130.04B at the time of writing. That is considerably higher than the roughly $82.39B market cap, so readers should keep in mind that a large share of supply is still outside circulation and could enter the market later.
Because supply is fixed and fees are burned, the long-run supply can only shrink, though the burn rate is very small. Trading volume over the past 24 hours was about $1.92B. Details of how the non-circulating coins are held and released are best checked in Ripple's own published reports.
Chains, holding and trading
XRP is native to a single chain, the XRP Ledger. It is not issued as a token on another blockchain in the data we have, so the coin itself lives on the ledger and is used to pay its transaction costs. Versions of XRP that appear on other networks are usually wrapped or bridged products from third parties, and they carry additional counterparty and bridge risk.
Most people get XRP in one of three ways. The first is through a centralized exchange, where an account holds the coin on the user's behalf. The second is through a self-custody wallet that supports the XRP Ledger, where the user holds the keys. The third, since late 2025, is through exchange-traded products, covered in the next section.
When sending XRP to an exchange, a destination tag is often required in addition to the address. This is a number that tells the exchange which customer account should be credited. Leaving it out can delay or complicate a deposit. The ledger also asks account holders to keep a small reserve of XRP in each account, so a brand-new wallet usually needs a minimum deposit before it can be used.
History and notable events
The ideas behind XRP go back to 2004, when Ryan Fugger worked on an early system of credit-based payments. In its modern form, the project was co-founded by Jed McCaleb and Chris Larsen. According to published guides, the XRP Ledger went live in June 2012, and the full supply was created at launch. The company that developed the technology is now known as Ripple.
XRP's price record shows large swings. The all-time low was about $0.0027 on 2014-05-21, and the all-time high was about $3.65 on 2025-07-17. As of 2026-11-05, the price is roughly $1.30, which is around 40 percent lower than a year earlier and up about 2 percent over the past seven days.
A notable milestone came in November 2025, when the SEC approved the first wave of spot XRP exchange-traded funds. Issuers named in the project description include Bitwise, Grayscale, 21Shares, Canary Capital and Franklin Templeton. These products give investors exposure through a regulated brokerage account instead of direct ownership of the coin. Regulatory treatment of XRP in the United States has been a recurring theme in its history.
Risks to understand
XRP carries the usual crypto risks, plus some that are specific to it. Price volatility is the most obvious. A drop of around 40 percent over a year, after reaching a record high in July 2025, shows how quickly sentiment can change.
Concentration is another concern. The ledger's consensus depends on validators on a trusted list, and the project's close association with Ripple means that company decisions, legal developments and partnerships can influence how the market views the token. Some critics argue this makes the network less decentralized than proof-of-work or large proof-of-stake chains. Supporters respond that the validator process is open and the ledger is energy-efficient.
Supply is also a factor. With a large part of the 100 billion total outside circulation, the fully diluted value is well above the current market cap. Regulatory outcomes in different countries could affect listings, products and institutional use.
Finally, scams are common around well-known coins. Fake giveaways, impersonation accounts and phishing sites targeting XRP holders are widespread. Nothing here is investment advice, and readers should only commit money they can afford to lose.
How to store XRP safely
Where you keep XRP depends on how much you hold and how often you move it. An exchange account is convenient for trading, but the exchange controls the keys, so you rely on its security and solvency. Many holders keep only what they plan to trade there.
For longer-term holding, a self-custody wallet that supports the XRP Ledger gives you control of your own keys. A hardware wallet that is compatible with the ledger keeps the private keys offline and is generally considered the stronger option for larger amounts.
A few habits help in either case:
- Write down the recovery phrase on paper and store it in a safe place. Never photograph it or save it in cloud storage.
- Never share the phrase or secret key with anyone, including people claiming to be support staff.
- Send a small test amount first, and double-check the address and any destination tag.
- Remember the reserve requirement: a new XRP Ledger account needs a minimum balance before it is active.
- Turn on two-factor authentication for exchange accounts and use a unique password.

XRP FAQs
Is XRP the same thing as Ripple?
XRP is the native token of the XRP Ledger, an independent blockchain. Ripple is a company that developed related technology and works with financial institutions. Ripple is a major participant in the ecosystem, but the ledger is an open network that does not belong to the company.
How many XRP will ever exist?
No. The maximum supply is 100 billion, and all of it was created when the ledger launched. As of 2026-11-05, about 63.35 billion are in circulation, and the total supply is a little under the maximum because a tiny amount of XRP is burned with each transaction.
What is XRP used for?
Its main roles are paying transaction costs on the XRP Ledger, acting as a bridge asset between currencies for payments, and serving as collateral for some institutional uses. Each transaction burns a very small amount, which helps deter spam.
Can XRP be mined or staked?
No. XRP uses a consensus process in which trusted validators must agree, with about 80 percent needed, before a transaction is final. Because of this, it avoids energy-intensive mining and does not have staking rewards.
Are there XRP ETFs?
Spot XRP exchange-traded funds were approved by the SEC in November 2025, with issuers including Bitwise, Grayscale, 21Shares, Canary Capital and Franklin Templeton. They let investors gain exposure through a brokerage account, but the fund holds the coins, not you. Fees and structure differ by product, so check each fund's documents.
What is XRP's price compared with its all-time high?
As of 2026-11-05, XRP trades at about $1.30, with a market cap of roughly $82.39B. Its all-time high was about $3.65 on 2025-07-17, so the price is well below that peak. These figures change constantly, and this page does not predict future prices.
What is the market cap of XRP?
As of Nov 6, 2026, XRP had a market cap of about $75.9B, ranking #5 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.
What is the all-time high of XRP?
XRP's all-time high is $3.65, reached on Jul 17, 2025. Its all-time low is $0.002686 (May 21, 2014). Past prices say nothing about future returns.
What is the circulating supply of XRP?
As of Nov 6, 2026, about 63.52B XRP were in circulation, against a maximum supply of 100B.
Which blockchains is XRP on?
XRP is the native token of XRP Ledger.
