What Bitcoin Cash is

Bitcoin Cash (BCH) is a cryptocurrency that split from Bitcoin on 1 August 2017 through a hard fork. A hard fork is a protocol change that is not compatible with the old rules, so the network divides in two. Everyone who held BTC at the moment of the split ended up with BCH as well.

The core idea behind BCH is that Bitcoin should work as everyday electronic cash. Its supporters argued that Bitcoin's 1MB block size limit would lead to slow confirmations and rising fees, so BCH launched with a larger limit of 8MB. Bigger blocks mean more transactions fit into each block.

Technically, BCH keeps much of Bitcoin's design. It uses proof of work with the SHA-256 hashing algorithm, so miners compete to add blocks. It also keeps the same style of transaction model and the same 21 million coin cap. It did not adopt Segregated Witness, the upgrade Bitcoin activated, and it prefers to make protocol upgrades through scheduled hard forks. BCH is the native coin of its own chain, so it is a Layer 1 asset and not a token issued on another network.

What BCH is used for

BCH's main job is to act as money on the Bitcoin Cash network. People use it to send payments, pay network fees to miners, and hold or trade it as an investment asset. The project's own messaging presents it as peer-to-peer electronic cash that is borderless and usable by individuals and businesses.

The case for BCH rests on payments being cheaper and quicker than on Bitcoin when the Bitcoin network is busy. Merchants and apps that accept it are a mix of small online shops, payment processors and wallet services, and acceptance is much narrower than for Bitcoin or card payments.

Beyond simple transfers, the chain has gained extra features over the years. Data lists it under the smart contract platform category, and publicly known additions include ways to create tokens on top of BCH. These features are far less used than on dedicated smart contract chains such as Ethereum, so most activity is still straightforward payments and trading.

BCH does not give holders governance rights in a company or a share of revenue. Its value comes from market demand for the coin itself.

Supply and tokenomics

BCH follows Bitcoin's supply model, with a hard cap of 21,000,000 coins. As of 2026-11-05, about 20.11 million BCH were in circulation, and total supply was almost identical. That means most of the supply has already been issued and the fully diluted value is roughly the same as the market cap.

New coins enter circulation as block rewards paid to miners. As with Bitcoin, the reward is cut in half at regular intervals, so issuance keeps slowing and approaches zero as the cap is reached. There was no token sale or large insider allocation tied to its launch. The coins were created by the fork, and holders of BTC at the time received a matching amount of BCH.

For scale, the data shows a price of about $287 and a market cap of about $5.78B at the time of writing, which put BCH around rank 20 by market cap. Daily trading volume was about $178M. These numbers move constantly and are given only for context. Over the previous year, the price had fallen by about 40 percent, and it remains far below its 2017 peak.

Chains and how BCH is held and traded

BCH runs on its own blockchain, called Bitcoin Cash, and is not issued on other chains. You hold it by controlling private keys for an address on that network. Addresses are different from Bitcoin's, so sending BCH to a BTC address, or the reverse, can result in lost funds if a service does not guard against it.

Most people get BCH in one of three ways: buying on a centralized exchange, trading on a decentralized or peer-to-peer venue, or receiving it as a payment. BCH is listed on many large exchanges and trades against major currencies and stablecoins, so liquidity is generally decent for a coin of its size, though less deep than Bitcoin.

Wrapped versions of BCH exist on some other chains, but they depend on a custodian or bridge, and they are a different asset with extra risk. Check which version a platform actually offers before you deposit.

Wallet options include mobile wallets, desktop wallets, browser extensions and hardware wallets that support the BCH chain. Pick one that is actively maintained and supports BCH natively.

History and notable events

Bitcoin Cash was released on 1 August 2017, after a long dispute in the Bitcoin community about how to scale the network. One camp favored keeping small blocks and adding layered solutions. The other wanted larger blocks on the main chain. BCH came from the second camp.

The price peaked at about $3,785 on 19 December 2017, according to the data, during the broader crypto boom. It later fell to a low of about $77 on 15 December 2018.

The most notable event came in November 2018. A dispute over the direction of the protocol turned into a hash war, a contest where miners direct computing power to back one chain over another. The result was a split between two camps, Bitcoin SV and Bitcoin ABC. Bitcoin ABC kept the Bitcoin Cash name and ticker, while Bitcoin SV became a separate coin.

The episode showed how contentious governance can be in a community-driven project, and it left BCH with a smaller developer and miner base than Bitcoin. Since then, the project has continued making scheduled protocol upgrades.

Risks to understand

BCH carries the usual risks of any crypto asset, plus a few of its own. Price volatility is high, and the roughly 40 percent drop over the past year, as of 2026-11-05, is an example of how quickly value can change. Nothing here is a forecast or advice to buy or sell.

Security is a specific concern for BCH. It uses the same SHA-256 algorithm as Bitcoin, but it has far less mining power behind it. A chain with less hash power is cheaper to attack, and this risk is taken seriously for smaller proof-of-work networks. Chain reorganizations and double-spend attempts are the main fears.

Adoption is another risk. Payment use has not grown to match the original vision, and Bitcoin remains the dominant asset in the space, which limits network effects. Governance disputes, like the 2018 split, could happen again.

There are also practical risks. Exchange failures, address mix-ups with Bitcoin, phishing sites and fake wallets can all cost you money. Regulatory treatment of crypto differs by country, so check the rules where you live.

How to store BCH safely

Safe storage comes down to who controls the private keys. If you leave BCH on an exchange, the exchange controls the keys and you rely on its security and solvency. That may be reasonable for small amounts you plan to trade soon, but it is not a good place for long-term holdings.

For self-custody, a hardware wallet that supports Bitcoin Cash is the common choice for larger amounts, since keys stay on the device. A reputable software wallet works for smaller, spendable balances. Whichever you use, write down the recovery phrase on paper or metal, store it offline in a secure place, and never type it into a website or share it with anyone. Support staff and giveaway promoters will never legitimately ask for it.

Before sending a large amount, send a small test transaction and confirm that the address is a Bitcoin Cash address. Double-check the first and last characters of the address, as clipboard-swapping malware is a real threat. Keep your device and wallet software updated, and download wallets only from official sources.

By the numbers

Bitcoin Cash in numbers

Bitcoin Cash (BCH) is ranked #20 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $5.37B and a price of $267.19 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($5.37B) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.

The price was down 5.8% over 7 days, down 13.7% over 30 days, down 44.5% over the past year. It trades about 93% below its all-time high of $3,786, set on Dec 19, 2017.

About 20.11M BCH are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 21M (96% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $248M, or 4.6% of its market cap: moderate turnover.

BCH is the native token of Bitcoin Cash. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

BCH is linked to Bitcoincash, which we cover in our Chain rankings. See our Bitcoincash page for how the protocol works and how we score it.

BCH FAQs

What is the difference between Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash?

Bitcoin Cash split from Bitcoin in August 2017 and uses larger blocks, aiming for cheaper, faster payments. Bitcoin kept smaller blocks and has since added features like Segregated Witness. Both share a 21 million cap and SHA-256 proof of work, but they are separate networks with separate coins.

Is there a maximum supply of BCH?

Yes. BCH has a hard cap of 21,000,000 coins. As of 2026-11-05, roughly 20.11 million were already in circulation, and the remainder is released gradually through mining rewards that shrink over time.

When was Bitcoin Cash created?

BCH launched on 1 August 2017 as a hard fork of Bitcoin. Anyone holding BTC at the time of the fork received an equal amount of BCH.

What happened with Bitcoin SV and Bitcoin Cash?

Bitcoin SV split from the Bitcoin ABC chain after a hash war in November 2018. Bitcoin ABC kept the Bitcoin Cash name and BCH ticker, while Bitcoin SV became a separate cryptocurrency with its own community.

Is BCH its own blockchain or a token on another chain?

BCH is the native coin of its own blockchain, so it is a Layer 1 asset and not a token on Ethereum or another chain. Wrapped versions can exist elsewhere, but they are different assets that depend on a bridge or custodian.

How can I store Bitcoin Cash?

You can use a wallet that supports the Bitcoin Cash network, including mobile, desktop and hardware options. Only you hold the keys in a self-custody wallet. Keep the recovery phrase offline, and make sure any address you send to is a BCH address.

What is the market cap of Bitcoin Cash?

As of Nov 6, 2026, Bitcoin Cash had a market cap of about $5.37B, ranking #20 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.

What is the all-time high of BCH?

Bitcoin Cash's all-time high is $3,786, reached on Dec 19, 2017. Its all-time low is $76.93 (Dec 15, 2018). Past prices say nothing about future returns.

What is the circulating supply of BCH?

As of Nov 6, 2026, about 20.11M BCH were in circulation, against a maximum supply of 21M.

Which blockchains is BCH on?

BCH is the native token of Bitcoin Cash.
