What Sui and the SUI token are

Sui is a Layer 1 blockchain built by Mysten Labs, a company founded by former lead engineers from Meta's blockchain research group. SUI is the network's native token. Sui is meant to handle ownership of digital assets, apps and games with fast confirmation and low, predictable fees.

The design differs from many older chains. Instead of one shared ledger of account balances, Sui organises data as separate objects, such as a coin, a game item or a piece of app state. Because many transactions touch different objects, the network can process them in parallel instead of in a single queue. The project describes this as horizontal scaling, which aims to keep fees stable as usage grows.

Smart contracts on Sui are written in Move, a programming language designed around safe handling of digital assets. Developers can define their own object types that work across the whole network, which helps apps connect with each other.

Sui is a proof-of-stake chain. It has attracted backing from large venture investors, including Andreessen Horowitz, Coinbase Ventures, Circle Ventures and YZi Labs. Investor backing says nothing about whether the token will hold its value.

What SUI is used for

SUI has three main jobs on the network. The first is paying gas, the fee for sending transactions and running smart contracts. Every action on Sui, from a simple transfer to a trade on a decentralised exchange, needs a small amount of SUI.

The second is staking. Holders can delegate their tokens to validators, the operators who confirm transactions and keep the network running. In return, delegators typically receive a share of staking rewards. Rewards and rates vary over time, so treat any quoted yield as a snapshot rather than a promise.

The third is governance, where token holders can take part in decisions about the network, according to public project descriptions.

Sui also has a storage fund. Part of the fees paid on the network goes into it, and it is used to reward validators for keeping data stored over the long term. This is meant to cover the ongoing cost of storing data on-chain.

Beyond these roles, SUI is the base asset used in many apps on the chain, including decentralised exchanges and lending platforms. Some apps let users avoid fees through sponsored transactions, where the app pays gas on the user's behalf.

Supply and tokenomics

The maximum supply of SUI is 10 billion tokens, and that is also the stated total supply. At the time of writing, about 4.14 billion SUI were circulating, which is roughly 41% of the cap. The rest is not yet in free circulation and is expected to be released over time under the project's published schedule, which readers should check in official documentation.

This gap matters for valuation. As of 2026-11-05, SUI traded at about $0.91, giving a market capitalisation of about $3.76 billion and a fully diluted valuation of about $9.09 billion. Market cap counts only circulating tokens, while fully diluted value assumes all 10 billion are in circulation at the current price. When a large share of supply is still to be released, new tokens entering the market can add selling pressure, though the effect depends on who receives them and what they choose to do.

Daily trading volume was about $370 million, and SUI ranked around 29th by market cap. These figures change constantly, so use them only as a rough guide to the token's size at that date.

Chains, holding and trading

SUI is the native asset of the Sui network, so it lives on its own chain rather than being an add-on token issued elsewhere. Wrapped or bridged versions may exist on other networks, but those carry extra risks from the bridge or wrapper, and users should confirm exactly which version they are handling.

Most people get SUI through a centralised exchange, where it can be bought with other crypto or local currency, depending on the platform and region. It is also traded on decentralised exchanges built on Sui. Once bought, SUI can be withdrawn to a personal wallet that supports the Sui network.

From a wallet, holders can send and receive tokens, delegate to validators for staking, and connect to apps. Sui also supports zkLogin, which lets people sign in to some apps with familiar web accounts instead of managing a traditional wallet setup, and sponsored transactions that can remove the need to hold SUI for fees in certain apps.

When withdrawing, double-check the network and address format. Sui addresses differ from those on other chains, and sending funds to the wrong kind of address can mean permanent loss.

History and notable events

Sui's mainnet went live in 2023, following earlier test networks run by Mysten Labs. The token's all-time low, about $0.36, was recorded on 2023-10-19, in the early period after launch. The token later rose sharply and reached an all-time high of about $5.35 on 2025-01-04.

Since that peak, the price has fallen considerably. As of 2026-11-05, SUI was around $0.91, and its price had dropped by roughly 54% over the previous year, while the past seven days were close to flat. That puts the token far below its high, though still well above its low.

SUI has also been part of the Binance Launchpool program, one of the ways early distribution reached the public. The project is listed among several large venture portfolios and is classed as a Smart Contract Platform in the Layer 1 category.

This summary is limited to what is publicly documented. Readers who want a full timeline, including specific upgrades, partnerships and token release events, should consult the project's own announcements and recent news.

Risks to understand

SUI is a volatile asset. A fall of more than half in a year, and a distance of more than 80% from its all-time high, shows how sharply prices can move. Nobody can reliably predict where the price goes next, and this page does not offer buy or sell advice.

Supply is a specific risk. With under half of the maximum supply circulating, future releases could weigh on the market if demand does not keep pace. The fully diluted valuation is more than double the current market cap for this reason.

Competition is another. Sui sits among many Layer 1 chains that all pursue developers, users and liquidity. Its success depends on apps and activity on the network, not only on technical design.

There are also technology risks. Smart contracts can contain bugs, bridges can be attacked, and a new network can face outages or flaws. Staking adds its own considerations, such as lock-up or unbonding periods and the reliability of the chosen validator.

Finally, scams are common around popular tokens, including fake airdrops, phishing sites and impersonators. Only invest what you can afford to lose.

How to store SUI safely

The safest way to hold SUI for the long term is in a wallet where you control the keys. Exchanges are convenient for trading, but funds left there depend on the exchange's security and solvency. Moving tokens you do not plan to trade into a personal wallet reduces that exposure.

When setting up a wallet, write the recovery phrase on paper or another offline medium and store it somewhere private and safe. Never type it into a website, share it in a chat, or keep it in a screenshot or cloud note. Anyone with that phrase can take your funds, and genuine support staff will never ask for it.

For larger amounts, consider a hardware wallet, after checking that the model supports Sui. Send a small test transaction before moving a large balance, and verify the address character by character.

Be careful when connecting your wallet to apps. Review what you are approving, use bookmarks instead of search ads, and disconnect from sites you no longer use. If you stake, pick validators with a solid track record and understand any waiting period before you can withdraw.

By the numbers

Sui in numbers

Sui (SUI) is ranked #30 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $3.56B and a price of $0.8611 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation is $8.61B, so roughly 41% of the eventual supply is in circulation today; tokens still to be released could add selling pressure.

The price was down 3.3% over 7 days, down 24.9% over 30 days, down 57.1% over the past year. It trades about 84% below its all-time high of $5.35, set on Jan 4, 2025.

About 4.14B SUI are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 10B (41% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $543M, or 15% of its market cap: high turnover.
