What NEAR Protocol is
NEAR Protocol is a layer-1 blockchain, meaning it runs its own network of validators and records its own transactions instead of sitting on top of another chain. Developers use it to build decentralized applications, and its native token, NEAR, is what powers the network. It uses proof of stake, so validators lock up NEAR to take part in securing the chain.
The project's technical identity is built around sharding. Its design, called Nightshade, splits the work of processing transactions across several parallel pieces so the network can handle more activity without every validator doing all of the work. The aim is low fees and fast confirmation for ordinary users.
NEAR also has a few user-facing features that set it apart. Accounts can have readable names rather than only long strings of characters, and the platform has put effort into hiding blockchain complexity from newcomers. More recently the project describes itself as a blockchain for AI, with an emphasis on user-owned AI agents, intents and chain abstraction. Those are project claims about direction, and how much of that vision gets real adoption is something readers should judge from activity on the network, not from marketing language.
What the NEAR token is used for
The NEAR token has several practical jobs on its own network. The first is paying for activity: transaction fees, and the cost of running smart contract code, are paid in NEAR. The second is storage. Keeping data on the chain requires holding a balance of NEAR as collateral, so the token is tied up while that data exists and is released when the data is removed.
The third job is security. Validators stake NEAR to participate in producing blocks, and ordinary holders can delegate their tokens to a validator and receive a share of the rewards. Staking ties the token's value to the network's safety, since misbehaving validators risk their stake.
Beyond those core uses, NEAR is the unit of account for the ecosystem's apps, such as trading, lending and wallet services built on the chain. The project's newer pitch around AI agents and cross-chain intents would also lean on the token for fees and settlement, but the specifics evolve, so check current project documentation. Governance and treasury functions exist in the wider ecosystem, though the details are best confirmed from official sources rather than assumed.
Supply and tokenomics
As of 2026-11-05, about 1.31 billion NEAR were in circulation, and the total supply was almost identical at roughly 1.31 billion. No hard maximum supply is listed, which fits with NEAR being an inflationary proof-of-stake token: new tokens are issued over time to pay validators and stakers. Earlier public descriptions of the network put annual issuance at about 5 percent, with part of fees being burned to offset it. Treat that figure as a historical description and check the current protocol parameters before relying on it.
Because circulating and total supply are nearly the same, the fully diluted valuation matches the market cap, at about $5.17 billion. That means there is no large block of locked tokens waiting to unlock according to the data we have, though future issuance still dilutes holders who do not stake.
The price was about $3.95 at the time of writing, giving NEAR a market cap rank of around 21. Twenty-four-hour trading volume was roughly $548.5 million. These numbers shift constantly and are shown only to give a sense of scale, not as a signal of anything.
Chains, holding and trading
NEAR is the native token of the NEAR chain itself, so it does not need to be issued on another network to work. Most people hold it in one of two ways. The first is on a centralized exchange, which is convenient for trading but means the exchange controls the keys. The second is in a self-custody wallet on the NEAR network, where the holder controls the keys and can stake, send tokens or use apps directly.
On-chain, NEAR accounts differ from the address style used on Ethereum. Accounts can carry human-readable names, and access keys can be limited so an app only gets narrow permissions rather than full control. Staking is done by delegating to a validator through a wallet or a staking interface, and unstaking takes a waiting period before tokens become available again.
Trading happens mainly on centralized exchanges, with additional markets on decentralized exchanges in the NEAR ecosystem and through bridges and cross-chain tools. Wrapped or bridged versions of NEAR on other chains carry extra bridge risk, so it is worth knowing which version you actually hold.
History and notable events
NEAR's mainnet went live in 2020, and the token's recorded trading history begins in late 2020, when it hit its all-time low of about $0.53 on 2020-11-04. It then rose sharply in the 2021 bull market and reached an all-time high of about $20.44 on 2022-01-16. Since then it has traded far below that peak. At the time of writing the price was roughly 80 percent under the high, even though it had gained about 118 percent over the previous year and had fallen around 9 percent in the past seven days.
The project was backed by well-known crypto investors. Data providers list firms such as Multicoin Capital, Dragonfly Capital, Coinbase Ventures and Alameda Research among its backers, and NEAR also appears on lists of tokens connected to FTX holdings, a reminder of how interwoven the 2021 funding landscape was. NEAR has also been tagged as an alleged security in some US regulatory discussions, which is a label about legal debate, not a court finding.
In recent years the project has shifted its messaging toward AI, which is why it now appears in both layer-1 and AI token categories.
Risks to understand
NEAR carries the usual risks of a mid-sized crypto asset. Price volatility is high, and the fall from its 2022 peak shows how deep drawdowns can be. The token competes with many other layer-1 chains, including Ethereum, Solana and others, and a chain's value depends on whether developers and users actually choose to build and stay there.
The AI narrative is a specific risk. Token prices tied to a theme can swing on sentiment, and plans for user-owned AI agents and chain-abstracted transactions may take longer than expected or may not find users. Inflation from ongoing issuance also dilutes holders who do not stake.
Other risks include smart contract bugs in apps built on NEAR, bridge failures if you hold wrapped versions on other chains, validator concentration, and regulatory uncertainty given the securities label some regulators and commentators have applied to it. Exchange risk matters too: tokens left on an exchange are subject to that company's solvency and policies, as the FTX collapse showed across the industry.
Nothing here is investment advice. Only commit money you can afford to lose and do your own research.
How to store NEAR safely
For small amounts you plan to trade, a reputable exchange account with strong two-factor authentication may be enough. For larger holdings or long-term storage, self-custody is generally safer, because you control the keys and are not exposed to the exchange.
Options include browser and mobile wallets built for NEAR, as well as hardware wallets that support the NEAR network. A hardware wallet keeps the private key off your internet-connected device and is the usual recommendation for meaningful balances. Check current compatibility before buying one.
Whichever wallet you use, write down the recovery phrase on paper and store it offline, away from photos, cloud notes and email. Never type it into a website or share it with anyone, including people claiming to be support staff. Test a small transfer first when moving funds to a new address, and double-check the account name or address character by character.
Be careful with approvals and access keys when connecting to apps, since a full-access key gives an app complete control. Revoke keys you no longer use, and beware of fake airdrops and phishing links, which are common in the NEAR ecosystem as elsewhere.
By the numbers
NEAR Protocol in numbers
NEAR Protocol (NEAR) is ranked #21 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $4.90B and a price of $3.74 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($4.90B) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.
The price was down 12.4% over 7 days, down 28.1% over 30 days, up 95.9% over the past year. It trades about 82% below its all-time high of $20.44, set on Jan 16, 2022.
About 1.31B NEAR are in circulation. No hard maximum supply is listed, so new tokens can still be issued.
24-hour trading volume was about $653M, or 13% of its market cap: high turnover.
NEAR is the native token of Near. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

NEAR FAQs
What is the NEAR token used for?
NEAR pays for transaction fees, smart contract execution and data storage on the NEAR blockchain. It is also staked by validators and delegators to secure the network and earn rewards.
Is there a maximum supply of NEAR?
No hard cap is listed. As of 2026-11-05, circulating supply was about 1.31 billion NEAR, almost equal to the total supply. New tokens are issued over time as staking rewards, so supply can grow.
Can you stake NEAR?
Yes. NEAR uses proof of stake, so you can delegate tokens to a validator through a compatible wallet and earn a share of rewards. Unstaking involves a waiting period before the tokens are available again.
What are NEAR's all-time high and low?
The all-time high was about $20.44 on 2022-01-16, and the all-time low was about $0.53 on 2020-11-04. At the time of writing, the price was about $3.95, well below the peak.
How is NEAR different from Ethereum?
NEAR is a layer-1 chain with its own sharded design, called Nightshade, aimed at low fees and scalability. It also positions itself around AI agents, intents and chain abstraction. Whether those features gain real adoption is uncertain.
What is the safest way to hold NEAR?
The best option depends on the amount. Exchanges are convenient, but you do not control the keys. For larger amounts, a self-custody wallet or a hardware wallet with NEAR support, plus an offline backup of the recovery phrase, is the common approach.
What is the market cap of NEAR Protocol?
As of Nov 6, 2026, NEAR Protocol had a market cap of about $4.90B, ranking #21 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.
What is the all-time high of NEAR?
NEAR Protocol's all-time high is $20.44, reached on Jan 16, 2022. Its all-time low is $0.5268 (Nov 4, 2020). Past prices say nothing about future returns.
What is the circulating supply of NEAR?
As of Nov 6, 2026, about 1.31B NEAR were in circulation; no fixed maximum supply is listed.
Which blockchains is NEAR on?
NEAR is the native token of Near.
