## What Cardano and ADA are
Cardano is a proof-of-stake blockchain designed to run smart contracts and decentralized applications. Its native cryptocurrency is ADA. The network can be used to send ADA between wallets, pay transaction fees, and interact with applications built on Cardano. Unlike Bitcoin, Cardano does not use mining based on energy-intensive computational puzzles to process transactions. It relies on stake pools and the Ouroboros proof-of-stake protocol instead.
Cardano’s development has drawn on academic research and formal methods, though that does not mean every change is peer-reviewed or that the network is free of bugs. The project was founded by Charles Hoskinson, who previously worked on Ethereum, and core software development has been associated with Input Output Global. Cardano’s development and governance involve a broader ecosystem of participants and organizations. ADA is a network asset, not a share in a company, and holding it does not give a claim on company profits.
## What ADA is used for
ADA has several roles within Cardano. You can use it to transfer value between compatible wallets, pay transaction fees, and interact with smart contracts and decentralized applications on the network. Fees are paid in ADA, so users generally need some ADA to make transactions or use Cardano-based services. Applications may also have their own tokens, which are distinct from ADA.
ADA holders can delegate stake to a stake pool to help participate in network consensus and may receive staking rewards. Delegation is not the same as lending ADA to an app, and on Cardano it generally does not require handing over custody of the tokens or locking them for a fixed term. Rewards can vary and are not guaranteed. ADA is also used in Cardano’s on-chain governance, where eligible holders can take part directly or through governance representatives, subject to the network’s current rules. These functions depend on Cardano; ADA does not automatically work as a payment token on other blockchains.
## Proof of stake and delegation
Cardano uses Ouroboros, a proof-of-stake consensus protocol. Rather than relying on miners competing to solve computational puzzles, the network selects stake pools to produce blocks. ADA holders can delegate their stake to a pool, helping determine how much stake is associated with it. Pool operators run the infrastructure that participates in block production, while delegators can retain control of their ADA in a compatible wallet.
Delegation can earn rewards, but the amount depends on factors such as network conditions and pool performance; rewards are not fixed or assured. Delegating stake is not risk-free: users should check pool details and understand how their wallet handles delegation and rewards. Cardano’s proof-of-stake approach generally uses substantially less energy for consensus than proof-of-work mining systems such as Bitcoin. That is a difference in how the networks operate, not a guarantee that ADA’s value or the network’s security will remain stable.
## Governance and voting
Cardano has on-chain governance features that allow ADA holders to participate in decisions about the network. Governance can involve voting on proposals and using delegated representatives, according to the rules and procedures active on Cardano. This gives holders a role in network decision-making, but it does not mean every holder votes directly on every change or that a proposal will pass simply because it has support.
Governance participation is separate from the ability to use ADA for payments or fees. Before voting or delegating voting power, check what a proposal would change and how the voting process works in your wallet or governance interface. Network governance is still subject to technical implementation, participation levels, and the rules established by Cardano’s ecosystem. ADA ownership does not confer legal ownership of Cardano, Input Output Global, or any other organization associated with the project.
## Supply and token economics
ADA has a maximum supply of 45 billion tokens. As of 2026-11-05, the reported circulating supply was about 37.6 billion ADA; circulating supply can change as tokens enter circulation. The difference between circulating supply and the cap is not an indication of when remaining ADA will be released, so check current network information for details on reserves and distribution. ADA is divisible, allowing users to transact in amounts smaller than one ADA.
On 2026-11-05, ADA traded at about $0.19, with a reported market capitalization of about $7.3 billion. These are date-specific figures, not a valuation forecast: prices, market capitalization, and trading activity can change rapidly across platforms. ADA’s reported all-time high was about $3.09 on 2021-09-01, while its reported all-time low was about $0.019 on 2020-03-12. Past prices do not indicate future performance. ADA has no guaranteed yield or fixed redemption value.
## History and development
Cardano and ADA emerged in 2017. The project was founded by Charles Hoskinson, who had previously been involved in Ethereum, and its development has emphasized research and a staged approach to adding network capabilities. Cardano introduced smart contract functionality after its earlier focus on transactions and staking, enabling developers to build applications on the chain.
Cardano’s roadmap and protocol have continued to evolve, including the expansion of on-chain governance. A long-running feature of its design is Ouroboros proof of stake, which differs from the proof-of-work mining used by Bitcoin. ADA’s price has also experienced large changes: it reached a reported high of about $3.09 on 2021-09-01 and a low of about $0.019 on 2020-03-12. Those milestones describe past market activity only. They do not establish what ADA may be worth in the future, and a project’s history is not evidence that future upgrades or adoption will succeed.
## Risks and safe storage
ADA carries the risks common to crypto assets: its market price can move sharply, transactions are generally irreversible, and technical faults, scams, or wallet mistakes can lead to permanent losses. Cardano applications and smart contracts add their own risks, including bugs and misuse. Network development, governance outcomes, regulation, and demand can also affect how useful ADA is. Staking rewards are variable, and delegation does not remove market risk.
ADA is native to the Cardano network. To hold it yourself, use a wallet that explicitly supports Cardano and keep the recovery phrase offline and private. Never share that phrase with a person, website, or support agent. Confirm the receiving network and address before sending; an exchange or wallet may have different deposit and withdrawal procedures. Buying through a custodial exchange means the provider controls the assets on your behalf, so consider its operational and account risks. Avoid keeping more crypto online than you can afford to lose.
By the numbers
Cardano in numbers
Cardano (ADA) is ranked #18 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $6.93B and a price of $0.1844 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation is $8.30B, so roughly 84% of the eventual supply is in circulation today; tokens still to be released could add selling pressure.
The price was down 4.6% over 7 days, down 28.9% over 30 days, down 65.6% over the past year. It trades about 94% below its all-time high of $3.09, set on Sep 1, 2021.
About 37.58B ADA are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 45B (84% issued).
24-hour trading volume was about $344M, or 5.0% of its market cap: moderate turnover.
