What Solana and SOL are

Solana is a Layer 1 blockchain, meaning it is a base network with its own ledger, validators and native currency. SOL is that currency. The project was founded in 2017 by Anatoly Yakovenko and is supported by the Switzerland-based Solana Foundation. Its early backers included investors such as Andreessen Horowitz and Polychain Capital.

The pitch is speed and low cost on a single, unified ledger. Solana does not split activity across shards or separate layers, so applications share one pool of liquidity and state. The network pairs Proof of Stake with Proof of History, a cryptographic clock that timestamps transactions so validators need less back-and-forth to agree on ordering. Its Sealevel runtime can run smart contracts that do not touch the same data in parallel across CPU cores, and the Gulf Stream protocol forwards transactions to upcoming validators before the current block is finished.

In practice, this means apps such as decentralized exchanges, lending markets, NFT marketplaces and games can run with fees that are often a fraction of a cent. As of 2026-11-05, SOL ranks about 7th by market capitalization.

What SOL is used for

SOL has a few distinct jobs on the network.

  • Transaction fees. Every transaction costs a small amount of SOL, whether it is a transfer, a token swap or an NFT mint. Many apps on Solana rely on SOL as the gas-style asset.
  • Staking. Holders can delegate SOL to validators, which helps secure the network. In return they receive staking rewards, paid in newly issued SOL. Liquid staking tokens from third-party protocols let holders keep a tradable receipt while their SOL is staked.
  • Governance. SOL is described as the asset used to take part in network governance, though much of Solana's day-to-day direction comes from validators, developers and the Solana Foundation.
  • A base asset in DeFi. SOL is widely used as collateral, a trading pair and a source of liquidity across Solana-based apps.

SOL is also used to pay rent-like deposits for storing data on the chain, a detail most users never see. Beyond finance, builders have pointed to tokenized real-world assets, payments and decentralized physical infrastructure networks as areas where Solana's low fees matter.

Supply and tokenomics

At the time of writing, about 590 million SOL are in circulation, out of a total supply of roughly 637 million. There is no fixed maximum supply, so SOL is not capped the way Bitcoin is. As of 2026-11-05, the market capitalization is about $56.08 billion and the fully diluted valuation is about $60.52 billion, with a price near $95.

New SOL enters circulation as staking rewards paid to validators and delegators. Part of each transaction fee is burned, which removes SOL from supply and offsets some of that issuance. Whether net supply rises or falls over time depends on the issuance schedule and on how much network activity there is. Check the Solana Foundation's current documentation for the exact schedule rather than relying on a summary.

The gap between circulating and total supply also reflects tokens held by early investors, the foundation and the team, some of which were released on vesting schedules. Large holders moving tokens can affect the market, so token distribution is worth understanding before judging the asset.

SOL's all-time high was about $293 on 2025-01-19. Its all-time low was about $0.50 on 2020-05-11. Over the past year it is down roughly 38%, and down about 4% over the past week as of the same date.

Chains, holding and trading

SOL is the native token of the Solana blockchain, so it lives on Solana itself rather than being issued on another chain. Versions of SOL wrapped for other networks exist, but those are separate tokens that depend on a bridge, which adds extra risk.

Most people hold SOL in one of three ways:

  • A centralized exchange account. Convenient for buying and selling, but the exchange controls the keys.
  • A self-custody wallet. Browser and mobile wallets such as Phantom and Solflare let you hold your own keys and connect to Solana apps.
  • A hardware wallet. These keep keys on a dedicated device and can be paired with the software wallets above.

SOL trades on large centralized exchanges against fiat currencies and stablecoins. It also trades on-chain through decentralized exchanges and aggregators such as Jupiter, Raydium and Orca. The 24-hour trading volume was about $4.54 billion as of 2026-11-05, which points to deep liquidity compared with most tokens.

To use Solana apps you generally need a small SOL balance for fees, even if you mainly hold other tokens. Spot Solana exchange-traded products also exist in some markets, giving price exposure without holding the token directly. Availability depends on where you live.

History and notable events

Solana was founded in 2017, and its network launched publicly a few years later. SOL has traded since at least May 2020, when it hit its recorded low of about $0.50. It grew through the 2021 cycle, helped by NFTs, DeFi and a fast-growing app ecosystem.

The network has also had difficult stretches. In earlier years it suffered several outages and periods of degraded performance, which drew criticism about reliability. Developers and validators have since worked on software upgrades and client diversity to address this.

SOL had close ties to FTX and Alameda Research, which held large amounts of it and were early backers. When FTX collapsed in late 2022, SOL fell sharply and the ecosystem was shaken, though development continued and activity later recovered.

More recently, institutional interest has grown. Spot Solana ETFs have launched, Visa began USDC settlement on the network in 2025, and firms such as Galaxy Digital have worked on tokenizing public equity on Solana. SOL reached its all-time high of about $293 on 2025-01-19 and has since fallen well below it. As of 2026-11-05 it trades around $95.

Risks to understand

SOL is a volatile asset. It is down about 38% over the past year as of 2026-11-05, and past moves show it can swing hard in either direction. Only hold what you could afford to lose.

  • Market risk. Price depends on sentiment, liquidity and wider crypto conditions. Nothing here is a prediction or advice to buy or sell.
  • Network risk. Past outages show that a fast, complex network can fail. Upgrades can also introduce bugs.
  • Concentration. Early investors, funds and insiders hold substantial amounts, and the validator set has faced questions about how decentralized it is.
  • No supply cap. Ongoing issuance dilutes holders who do not stake, though fee burning partly offsets this.
  • Ecosystem risk. Many Solana apps are new and unaudited, and scams, fake tokens and rug pulls are common, especially around memecoins.
  • Regulatory risk. Rules on tokens, staking and exchanges differ by country and can change.
  • Counterparty risk. Exchanges and bridges can fail or be hacked.

Staking carries its own risks, including unstaking delays and, with liquid staking, smart contract risk in the third-party protocol.

How to store SOL safely

The safest setup depends on how much you hold and how often you use it.

For larger amounts, a hardware wallet is the usual choice. Buy it directly from the manufacturer, set it up yourself, and never enter your recovery phrase into a website, app or message. Write the phrase on paper or metal and store it offline in more than one secure place. Anyone with that phrase controls your funds, and no one can recover it for you.

For everyday use, keep a smaller balance in a software wallet and the rest in cold storage. Download wallets only from official sources, and check browser extensions carefully, since fake versions exist.

Before signing any transaction, read what you are approving. Wallet-draining scams often ask for broad permissions or arrive as airdrops, fake support chats and links sent by direct message. Use a separate wallet for trying new apps.

If you stake, check the validator's record and fees. If you use liquid staking, understand the protocol behind the token. Keep a little SOL spare for fees so you are never stuck unable to move assets. Finally, keep records for tax reporting, which varies by country.
