What TRON is

TRON is a layer 1 blockchain that launched in 2017 and is run by a community DAO, with the TRON Foundation and founder Justin Sun as its best-known backers. TRX is its native token. The project describes itself as a decentralized operating system for the internet, and in practice it is best known as a network where people move stablecoins and run smart contract applications.

The chain is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine, so developers can port contracts written for Ethereum-style networks without starting over. It uses Delegated Proof-of-Stake, where token holders vote for 27 Super Representatives who produce blocks and validate transactions. The design aims for high throughput and fast finality rather than maximum decentralization of block production.

The ecosystem includes JustLend DAO, a lending and borrowing protocol, and the BitTorrent File System, which targets decentralized file storage. As of 2026-11-05, TRX ranked about 8th by market capitalization, which makes it one of the larger layer 1 tokens by that measure.

What TRX is used for

TRX does several jobs on the network. First, it is the base asset of the chain, so it is used to pay for activity and to access network resources. Second, it can be locked in staking to receive TRON Power, which gives voting weight in elections for Super Representatives and on network rules. Voters can earn rewards for helping secure the network.

TRON also uses a resource model built around bandwidth and energy. Bandwidth covers ordinary transfers, while energy is consumed when smart contracts run. Users can obtain these resources by staking TRX, or they can burn TRX to cover costs when they have not staked. The goal is to keep fees steadier for people who transact often, rather than letting costs spike when the network is busy.

Beyond those functions, TRX is also a general-purpose asset that people hold and trade. How much a given holder uses it for staking, fees or simple custody varies widely, and the project materials do not break that down.

Supply and tokenomics

TRX has no fixed maximum supply in the data available. At the time of writing, circulating supply was about 95.03 billion TRX and total supply was almost identical, so nearly all issued tokens are already in circulation. Because of that, the fully diluted valuation matched the market cap, at about $30.25B as of 2026-11-05.

The price on that date was about $0.318, down roughly 3.8% over seven days and up about 11.6% over one year. Reported 24-hour trading volume was about $400 million. The all-time high was about $0.431 on 2024-12-03, and the all-time low was about $0.0018 on 2017-11-11.

These figures move constantly and are given only as a snapshot, not as a view on direction. For tokenomics details such as how newly issued tokens reach stakers or how burning offsets issuance, public sources are limited. Check the project's official documentation for current rules before drawing conclusions about inflation or deflation.

Chains, holding and trading

TRX is the native token of the TRON chain and does not depend on another network for its core function. Users hold it in wallets that support TRON addresses and can send it directly on-chain. Smart contracts on TRON, including those of JustLend DAO, run on the same network and use the energy and bandwidth model.

In general terms, people obtain TRX through centralized exchanges, which list it widely, or through decentralized exchanges and bridges that operate within the TRON ecosystem. Moving value on TRON requires a TRON-format address, which is different from an Ethereum-style address even though the virtual machine is compatible. Sending funds to the wrong network or address format can lead to lost or stuck assets, so always check which network a deposit address belongs to.

TRON is also widely used as a rail for stablecoin transfers. Those tokens live on TRON as separate assets, and TRX is typically needed in the same wallet to cover the resource costs of moving them.

History and notable points

The data lists TRX as launched on 2017-08-28, and it hit its all-time low in November of that year, before a long history of price cycles. The project was founded and led by Justin Sun and is supported by the TRON Foundation. The project materials say governance has since moved to a decentralized autonomous organization, in which token holders vote on rules and Super Representatives.

TRON's reputation is closely tied to its role as a stablecoin settlement network and to its ecosystem of applications such as JustLend DAO and the BitTorrent File System. Its most recent all-time high, about $0.431, came on 2024-12-03.

The token also appears in some market classifications with labels such as alleged securities, which reflects regulatory attention in the United States rather than any final finding that applies to every holder. It is also tagged with various ecosystem and portfolio groupings. Readers who care about regulatory status should look to current official statements and legal filings, since the situation can change.

Risks to understand

Several risks are worth weighing. The first is concentration. With only 27 Super Representatives producing blocks, the network is more centralized than many alternatives, and the project's strong association with one founder means decisions and reputation are linked to a small group of people. The second is regulatory risk, as some classifications flag TRX as an alleged security, and rules for tokens can change by country.

Third is market risk. TRX is volatile, and the seven-day and one-year changes above show how much the price can move. Fourth is stablecoin dependence. A large share of network activity involves stablecoins, so issuer actions, freezes or policy changes can affect how the network is used. Finally, smart contract risk applies to any DeFi protocol, including lending platforms, where bugs or exploits can cost users their funds.

None of this is advice to buy or sell. It is a list of things to understand before holding TRX or using applications built on TRON.

How to store TRX safely

TRX can be held on an exchange or in your own wallet. Exchange custody is convenient, but the exchange controls the keys, so you rely on its security and solvency. A self-custody wallet that supports TRON gives you control, but you alone are responsible for the recovery phrase.

For larger amounts, a hardware wallet that supports TRON keeps the private keys offline and is generally considered safer than a phone or browser wallet. Write the recovery phrase on paper or metal, keep it offline, and never type it into a website or share it with anyone claiming to offer support.

Before sending a large transfer, send a small test amount first and confirm the network and address format. Be careful with approvals when connecting a wallet to applications such as lending protocols, and revoke permissions you no longer need. Because stablecoin transfers on TRON need TRX for resources, leave a small TRX balance in the wallet so you are not stuck unable to move funds.

By the numbers

TRON in numbers

TRON (TRX) is ranked #8 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $30.2B and a price of $0.3182 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($30.2B) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.

The price was down 5.7% over 7 days, down 4.5% over 30 days, up 10.9% over the past year. It trades about 26% below its all-time high of $0.4313, set on Dec 3, 2024.

About 95.03B TRX are in circulation. No hard maximum supply is listed, so new tokens can still be issued.

24-hour trading volume was about $400M, or 1.3% of its market cap: low turnover, so large orders can move the price.

TRX is the native token of Tron. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.
