What is Gitcoin?

Gitcoin is a platform focused on funding builders working on open-source projects. Its aim is to help communities direct support toward digital public goods and other projects that people can use and build on. Gitcoin’s work includes grant funding, where projects seek contributions from supporters and communities.

GTC is Gitcoin’s governance token. It is associated with GitcoinDAO, the community governance organization connected to the project. Holding GTC does not by itself mean that you are funding a particular project or that you will receive money from Gitcoin. The token’s role is chiefly in governance, rather than serving as a general payment token for the platform.

What is GTC used for?

GTC is used for governance participation, including voting and delegation on GitcoinDAO decisions. Governance topics may involve how the organization uses its treasury or handles grant-related matters. Delegation lets a holder assign their voting power to another participant, where that option is available under the governance process.

Governance power is not the same as a guaranteed say in every Gitcoin decision: proposals, voting rules and participation can change. A token holder should review the current proposal and governance procedures before delegating or voting. GTC does not guarantee a return, a share of Gitcoin’s revenue or an allocation of grant funds. Its influence depends on the project’s governance arrangements and how token holders participate.

GTC supply and market value

GTC has a maximum and total supply of 100 million tokens. About 87.5 million were in circulation as of November 5, 2026, or roughly 87.5% of that maximum. The circulating amount can change as tokens move into or out of circulation, so figures should be treated as time-specific rather than permanent.

On November 5, 2026, GTC was trading at about $0.215, with a market capitalization of about $18.8 million. These are snapshots, not stable values. Token prices and market capitalization can change quickly, and the figures do not indicate what GTC may be worth later. GTC has no stated consensus or hashing role; it is a governance token, not a token used to secure a blockchain through mining.

Networks and how to store GTC

GTC is issued on Ethereum and Near, and it is not identified as the native token of either network. This distinction matters when sending or receiving it: the same token name can appear on different networks, and assets on separate networks are not automatically interchangeable. Confirm that the wallet and receiving service support GTC on the network you intend to use before making a transfer.

For self-custody, use a wallet that supports the relevant network and token, and keep the recovery phrase private and offline. Never share a recovery phrase or private key with someone claiming to help you claim, vote with or secure GTC. A transfer to an incompatible address or network may be difficult or impossible to recover. If using an exchange, check its supported networks and withdrawal details first.

Risks to consider

GTC carries the risks common to crypto assets, including sharp price changes, uncertain market liquidity and the possibility of losing some or all of the amount you hold. A governance token can also have limited practical influence if few holders participate or if governance rules change. GTC’s role in Gitcoin does not ensure that the platform, grant programs or token will remain active or successful.

There are also operational risks. Sending tokens on the wrong network, interacting with a malicious voting page or exposing wallet credentials can lead to permanent losses. Check proposals and transaction details carefully, and rely on official project communications when verifying governance activity. Treat GTC as a token with governance utility and significant uncertainty, not as a guaranteed investment or a source of fixed income.

By the numbers

Gitcoin in numbers

Gitcoin (GTC) is ranked #858 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $18.9M and a price of $0.2162 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation is $21.6M, so roughly 87% of the eventual supply is in circulation today; tokens still to be released could add selling pressure.

The price was up 1.1% over 7 days, up 9.2% over 30 days, up 26.4% over the past year. It trades about 99% below its all-time high of $22.37, set on Nov 26, 2021.

About 87.49M GTC are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 100M (87% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $8.46M, or 45% of its market cap: very high turnover.

GTC has token contracts on 2 chains we track, including Ethereum, Near. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.
