What Basic Attention Token is

Basic Attention Token (BAT) is an ERC-20 utility token created to support a different model for digital advertising. The idea is that advertisers pay for real user attention, publishers get paid for the content that earns it, and users can receive a share of the value they generate by viewing ads.

BAT is closely tied to the Brave browser, an open-source browser built around blocking trackers and intrusive ads. Brave's ad system, called BAT Ads, matches ads to users with locally stored data. Targeting happens on the user's device rather than through third-party tracking, which is the privacy argument the project makes against conventional ad networks.

The project came out of work begun around 2016. Its best-known founder is Brendan Eich, who created JavaScript and co-founded Mozilla. Brian Bondy, a Brave co-founder and lead developer, is another named team member. BAT is an independent token, not the native coin of any blockchain. It began on Ethereum and now exists as wrapped or bridged versions on several other networks.

At the time of writing, BAT ranks around 166th by market capitalization.

What BAT is used for

BAT's stated purpose is to act as the unit of exchange between three groups: advertisers, publishers and users. Advertisers spend BAT to reach people, publishers are rewarded for the attention their content draws, and users who opt into Brave's ad program can receive a portion of the rewards for seeing privacy-respecting ads.

In practice, most people meet BAT through Brave Rewards, an opt-in feature in the browser. Users who turn it on see ads and can accumulate BAT, and they can also send small contributions to sites and creators they choose. How rewards are paid out, to whom, and through which partner services has changed over the years and can vary by region, so check the browser's own documentation for current rules.

Outside Brave, BAT is also an ordinary tradable crypto asset. Some people hold it as a speculative position or as a way to follow the project, and it can be used on decentralized finance platforms on the chains where it is issued. The token itself does not grant governance rights or a claim on Brave's revenue, and no such feature appears available here.

Supply and tokenomics

BAT has a fixed maximum supply of 1.5 billion tokens. At the time of writing, about 1.4957 billion are circulating and the total supply is 1.5 billion. That means almost the whole supply is already out in the market, so there is little future dilution from unlocks.

The initial coin offering took place on May 31, 2017. It raised roughly $35 million in under 30 seconds, an event that became one of the best-known examples of the 2017 token sale boom. The project has also described a portion of the supply as set aside for a user growth pool, used to fund rewards for people who adopt the platform. The detailed allocation is not reproduced here, so consult the project's original documents for exact splits.

Market figures as of 2026-11-05, all approximate:

  • Price: about $0.139
  • Market capitalization: about $208.0 million
  • Fully diluted valuation: about $208.5 million
  • 24-hour trading volume: about $22.5 million

Because nearly all tokens circulate, market cap and fully diluted value are almost identical. These numbers move constantly and should be treated as a snapshot, not a guide.

Chains, holding and trading

BAT was issued on Ethereum as an ERC-20 token, and that remains its original home. According to the data available, it has also been issued on Avalanche, Solana, Near, Harmony and Polygon. These versions generally exist so BAT can be used with wallets and applications on those networks. Not every version has the same liquidity or support, so check which network a particular token or exchange deposit address uses before sending anything.

Most trading happens on centralized exchanges, where BAT is quoted against stablecoins and major cryptocurrencies. It can also be swapped on decentralized exchanges on the networks above. Within Brave, rewards have typically been handled through custodial partner services, though the specifics have changed over time.

To hold BAT yourself, you need a wallet that supports the specific network your tokens are on. A token sent to an address on the wrong network may be difficult or impossible to recover. Always test with a small amount first and confirm the contract address from an official source rather than from a search result or a message.

History and notable events

BAT launched in 2017 with a sale that sold out almost instantly, and it quickly became linked with Brave's growth as a privacy-focused browser. Brave's user base and its ad program have been the main way the token has found real-world use.

Price history shows how volatile the asset has been. BAT reached an all-time high of about $1.90 on 2021-11-27, during the peak of the last major market cycle. According to the data, it hit its all-time low of about $0.055 on 2026-08-14. As of 2026-11-05 it trades around $0.139, which is roughly 25 percent lower than a year earlier and about 1.8 percent higher over the past seven days. That is a long way below its peak.

The project has also had to adapt as the crypto and browser landscape shifted, including changes to how rewards and wallets work in Brave. Readers should treat older articles with caution, since descriptions of BAT's features from 2017 to 2021 may no longer match how the product operates today.

Risks to understand

BAT carries the usual risks of a small-cap crypto asset, plus some that are specific to its design.

Price volatility. Large drawdowns have happened before and can happen again. Prices can fall sharply regardless of how well the product is doing.

Adoption dependence. BAT's value case depends heavily on Brave and its ad system. If browser usage, advertiser demand or the rewards program weakens, demand for the token may also weaken. Token holders have no stated claim on Brave's profits.

Concentration of the ecosystem. Much of the project's activity runs through one company's product, which creates dependence on that company's decisions about payouts, partners and regional availability.

Regulatory and custody risk. Rules about rewards, custodial services and crypto in general differ by country and can change. Rewards held with a custodian are subject to that provider's terms and verification requirements.

Bridge and multi-chain risk. Versions on other networks can depend on bridges or wrapping, which add smart contract risk. Fake tokens with similar names also exist.

Nothing here is investment advice, and this page does not predict prices.

How to store BAT safely

How you store BAT depends on how much you hold and how you use it.

For small amounts used in Brave, the built-in rewards setup is convenient, but funds held by a custodian are not under your sole control. Move amounts you care about to a wallet you control.

For longer-term holding, a hardware wallet that supports the network your BAT is on is a common choice. Write your recovery phrase on paper or metal, store it offline in more than one secure place, and never type it into a website, share it in a chat or photograph it. Anyone who has the phrase controls the funds.

Before any transfer, confirm three things: the network, the receiving address and the token contract. Send a small test transaction first. Be wary of unsolicited messages, airdrop claims and sites that ask you to connect your wallet and approve unlimited spending. Periodically review and revoke token approvals you no longer need.

If you leave BAT on an exchange, enable two-factor authentication with an authenticator app, use a unique password and withdraw anything you do not plan to trade.

By the numbers

Basic Attention in numbers

Basic Attention (BAT) is ranked #168 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $199M and a price of $0.1331 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($200M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.

The price was up 2.1% over 7 days, up 27.2% over 30 days, down 33.1% over the past year. It trades about 93% below its all-time high of $1.90, set on Nov 27, 2021.

About 1.5B BAT are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 1.5B (100% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $19.2M, or 9.6% of its market cap: high turnover.

BAT has token contracts on 6 chains we track, including Ethereum, Avalanche, Solana, Near. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.
