What Akash Network is
Akash Network is an open-source marketplace for cloud computing that runs on a blockchain. Instead of renting servers from one large provider, users post workloads they want to run, and independent providers with spare computing capacity compete to host them. The idea is that open competition can push prices down and reduce dependence on a few centralized companies.
The network is built with the Cosmos SDK, a toolkit for creating application-specific blockchains, and it uses proof of stake to secure the ledger. AKT is the network's native token. Because it sits on the Cosmos side of the industry, it is designed to connect with other chains in that ecosystem rather than live in isolation.
Akash is tagged under both AI tokens and DePIN (decentralized physical infrastructure networks). The AI label reflects the demand for compute that machine learning workloads create, and the DePIN label reflects that the network's value comes from real hardware supplied by outside operators. As with any project, the description on its homepage is marketing language, so it helps to separate what the network actually does, which is matching compute buyers and sellers, from broader claims about transforming cloud services.
What AKT is used for
According to the project's own materials, AKT has several jobs. The first is securing the chain: validators and delegators stake AKT, and in return they earn rewards for helping to produce blocks and keep the network honest. The second is governance: AKT holders can vote on proposals that change network parameters or direct upgrades.
The third role is payment and fees. AKT is the default token for fees on the network and a default way to store and exchange value within it. Users who rent compute can pay with AKT, and providers earn from leases. In practice, the amount of real compute demand running through the marketplace, and how much of it is settled in AKT, matters more to the token's utility than any description on paper.
Staking is the most common way holders take part. Delegating tokens to a validator lets you earn rewards, but it also exposes you to rules such as an unbonding period, during which tokens cannot be moved, and to the possibility of penalties if your chosen validator misbehaves. Check the current parameters before staking.
Supply and tokenomics
At the time of writing, data as of 2026-11-05 shows about 299.5 million AKT in circulation out of a total supply of about 299.5 million, with a stated maximum supply of roughly 388.5 million. That means the circulating amount is almost equal to the total, and the gap between today's total and the maximum is the portion that could still be created over time, mainly through staking rewards.
Because the circulating and total figures are so close, the fully diluted valuation and market cap are the same in the data, both about $193.7 million. That is useful context: there is no large locked allocation waiting to unlock, though inflation from staking rewards still increases supply gradually.
I don't have detailed allocation or emission schedules in the data, so read the project's own documentation and governance proposals for how rewards and any burn or mint mechanisms work. Those rules can be changed by governance votes. For scale, AKT ranked around 174th by market cap on that date, with about $6.5 million traded in 24 hours, and a price near $0.65.
Chains and how AKT is held and traded
AKT's home is the Akash blockchain itself, a Cosmos SDK chain. The data also lists AKT as issued on Archway and Osmosis, which are other Cosmos ecosystem networks. Osmosis is a decentralized exchange chain, so AKT can be traded there against other Cosmos assets, while the Archway listing reflects a presence on that smart contract platform.
In general terms, people hold AKT in a Cosmos-compatible wallet and move it between chains using IBC, the inter-blockchain communication protocol that Cosmos chains share. Staking is done directly from the wallet or through a staking interface. AKT is also available on centralized exchanges, where you can buy and sell it without handling the chain directly, though you then rely on the exchange to hold your coins.
Each route has trade-offs. Moving tokens across chains adds steps where mistakes can happen, such as sending to the wrong address or using the wrong network. Test with a small amount first, and confirm that the receiving wallet or exchange supports the specific chain you are sending from.
History and notable events
The data does not give a launch date for the token, so I won't state one. What it does show is the price record: an all-time high of about $8.07 on 2021-04-06, during the broad crypto bull market of that year, and an all-time low of about $0.165 on 2022-11-21, during the sell-off that followed the collapse of a major exchange. As of 2026-11-05, the price was around $0.65, roughly 92 percent below that peak.
Over the preceding year, the data shows a gain of about 19 percent, and a roughly flat week, down about 0.3 percent. Those are snapshots, not trends to extrapolate.
Public sources also note that in August 2021 the project announced AKT as its utility token, describing it as used to govern and secure the blockchain and to reward participants. Beyond that, the story of the network is tied to the growth of demand for decentralized compute, particularly from AI-related workloads. For a fuller timeline, such as upgrades and governance milestones, consult the project's official channels and governance records.
Risks to understand
Several risks are worth weighing. Demand risk comes first: the network only has value if people actually rent compute through it, and it competes with very large, well-funded centralized cloud companies as well as other decentralized compute projects. Marketing claims about speed, cost or efficiency should be checked against real usage.
Price risk is considerable. AKT has fallen far from its 2021 high, trades at modest daily volume relative to larger assets, and can move sharply. Liquidity can be thin when markets are stressed.
There are also protocol and staking risks. Validators can be penalized for downtime or double-signing, and delegators may lose a portion of their stake. Staked tokens are locked during unbonding, so you cannot sell quickly. Inflation from staking rewards dilutes holders who do not stake.
Finally, there are operational risks: smart contract bugs on connected chains, bridge or transfer errors, and exchange failures if you leave funds on a platform. Governance can change rules, and regulatory treatment of tokens varies by country. None of this is advice to buy or sell; do your own research and only risk what you can afford to lose.
How to store AKT safely
If you plan to hold AKT for more than a short time, a self-custody wallet gives you control of your keys. Cosmos-compatible wallets such as Keplr and Leap are commonly used for AKT, and many support hardware wallets like Ledger, which keep your private keys offline and are the safer choice for larger amounts.
Write down your recovery phrase on paper or metal and store it somewhere private and protected from fire and water. Never type it into a website, share it with support staff, or store it as a photo or in cloud notes. Anyone with the phrase controls your funds.
Before sending a meaningful amount, send a small test transaction and confirm that the address and network are correct. Be careful with staking links and airdrop messages, since phishing sites imitate wallet and validator interfaces. Check the address of any transaction you approve, and revoke anything you do not recognize.
If you keep tokens on an exchange for trading, treat that as temporary, enable two-factor authentication, and withdraw what you do not need to trade. Remember that staked tokens are locked during unbonding.
