What BitTorrent (BTT) is

BitTorrent Token (BTT) is the token tied to the BitTorrent file-sharing ecosystem. The BitTorrent protocol was created by Bram Cohen as a peer-to-peer way to move files between users without a central server. BTT was added later to bring economic incentives into that network, so that bandwidth, storage and other resources can be shared and paid for.

The token was originally created as a TRC-10 token on the TRON blockchain. It now exists on several networks, and it is the native token of the BitTorrent Chain, often shortened to BTTC. Data aggregators group it under DePIN (decentralized physical infrastructure) and storage tokens, because the products it supports revolve around bandwidth and file storage.

At the time of writing, BTT ranks around 122nd by market capitalization, with a market cap of about $352.1 million as of 2026-11-05. The unit price is a tiny fraction of a cent, which is a result of the very large supply rather than a sign of how the project is valued. This page explains the token for readers who want background, not a recommendation to buy or sell.

What the token is used for

BTT is described publicly as a utility token for the BitTorrent ecosystem. Three uses come up most often.

BitTorrent Speed. Users who want faster downloads can offer BTT to other peers in exchange for more bandwidth. People who keep seeding files can earn BTT when someone is willing to pay for quicker access. Community discussion suggests earnings depend on seeding content that other BTT holders actually want, so results vary a lot.

BTFS. The BitTorrent File System is a decentralized storage network. BTT is used there to pay for storage and to reward those who provide it.

BitTorrent Chain (BTTC). BTTC is a blockchain layer that supports transactions and interoperability with TRON, Ethereum and BNB Chain. BTT acts as its native token, which means it is used for network fees on that chain.

Beyond these roles, the token is also traded on exchanges like many other cryptocurrencies. How much real demand comes from the utility uses, compared with trading, is hard to measure from public data, and readers should treat claims about adoption with some caution.

Supply and tokenomics

BTT has an unusually large supply. The total and maximum supply are both listed at 990 trillion tokens. About 965.4 trillion were circulating as of 2026-11-05, which is roughly 97.5% of the total. Fully diluted valuation is about $361.0 million, only slightly above the market cap, so there is little supply left to be released into the market.

Because the supply is so large, each token is worth a very small amount. The price was about $0.000000365 at the time of writing. Quoted prices with that many decimal places are easy to misread, so check the digits carefully when comparing across platforms.

The project has also carried out token burns, which permanently remove tokens from circulation. A report dated October 2026 described a burn of about 21.62 trillion BTT. Burns reduce supply, but they do not by themselves guarantee any effect on price, and the detailed allocation schedule is not covered here because it is not. Check the project's own documentation for current supply figures before relying on any number.

Chains, holding and trading

BTT is issued on four networks: Tron, Ethereum, BNB Chain and the BitTorrent Chain itself. It started on Tron as a TRC-10 token, and versions on other chains are linked through bridging systems. This means that two wallets holding "BTT" may be holding the token on different networks, and those versions are not interchangeable without a bridge or an exchange that supports the transfer.

Most people hold and trade BTT through centralized exchanges, where it has been listed for years. Trading volume over 24 hours was about $22.8 million as of 2026-11-05, which shows there is regular activity. Some holders use decentralized exchanges and bridges on the chains where BTT is available.

Before any transfer, confirm which network your sending and receiving addresses use. Deposits sent on the wrong network can be difficult or impossible to recover. Exchange deposit pages normally list the supported networks for BTT, so read them closely and consider a small test transfer first.

History and notable events

The BitTorrent protocol dates back to Bram Cohen's work in the early 2000s, and it became one of the best-known file-sharing technologies. The token came much later. BTT was sold through the Binance Launchpad and built on TRON, which is why the project is listed under both the Binance Launchpad and Tron ecosystem categories. The exact launch date is not in the data for this page, so it is not stated here.

BTT reached its all-time high of about $0.00000343 on 2022-01-20. As of 2026-11-05 the price sits roughly 89% below that level. The all-time low of about $0.000000255 was recorded on 2026-08-15, so the token traded near its lowest point only a few months before this snapshot. Over the past year the price fell about 13.9%, while the last seven days showed a small gain of about 0.7%.

A notable recent event is the burn of about 21.62 trillion BTT reported in October 2026. Data providers also tag BTT as an "alleged SEC security", which reflects regulatory discussion in the United States about various tokens. That label is a note about scrutiny and not a ruling on this page's part.

Key risks

BTT carries the usual risks of a small-cap crypto asset, plus some of its own.

Price volatility. The token is far below its 2022 peak and has hit new lows in 2026. Large swings in either direction are normal for assets of this size.

Unclear utility demand. BitTorrent Speed and BTFS exist, but how much BTT they actually use is hard to verify. A big part of the trading may be speculative.

Regulatory risk. The "alleged SEC securities" tag shows that regulators in some jurisdictions have looked at tokens like this. Rules differ by country and can change, which may affect exchange availability.

Centralization and project risk. The ecosystem is closely tied to TRON and its leadership, so decisions about the project depend on a small number of parties.

Bridge and multi-chain risk. Moving BTT between Tron, Ethereum, BNB Chain and BTTC relies on bridges, and bridges have been a frequent target of hacks across the industry.

Decimal and unit confusion. With such a tiny unit price, mistakes with amounts are easy to make. This is not financial advice, and you should only consider money you can afford to lose.

How to store BTT safely

How you store BTT depends on how much you hold and how often you move it.

For small amounts used for trading, an exchange account is convenient, but you rely on the exchange to keep your funds safe. Turn on two-factor authentication using an authenticator app rather than SMS, and use a unique password.

For longer-term holding, self-custody gives you control of your keys. Pick a wallet that supports the specific network where your BTT lives, such as Tron, Ethereum or BNB Chain. Hardware wallets keep private keys offline, and many support those networks, though you should check that your chosen device and app support the BTT version you hold.

Write your recovery phrase on paper or metal and keep it offline in a safe place. Never type it into a website, share it in a chat or store it in a photo or cloud note. Anyone who asks for it is trying to steal your funds.

Before a large transfer, send a small test amount and confirm it arrives on the right network. Be careful with token approvals on decentralized apps, and avoid unofficial bridges or links sent by strangers. Fake airdrops and cloned wallet apps are common scams around well-known tokens.

By the numbers
