What Bitcoin SV is

Bitcoin SV (BSV) is a proof-of-work cryptocurrency that split from Bitcoin Cash in November 2018. Bitcoin Cash had itself split from Bitcoin (BTC) in 2017. The name stands for "Satoshi Vision". The project says it aims to restore Bitcoin to the design described in Satoshi Nakamoto's white paper and early software.

In practice, that means a different set of technical choices from BTC. BSV removed the artificial block size limit and re-enabled some script commands that Bitcoin's developers had disabled or restricted. Its backers argue this lets the network scale on-chain, support very cheap micropayments and carry data-heavy applications.

It uses the SHA-256 hashing algorithm, the same as Bitcoin, so it is mined with similar hardware. CoinGecko lists it under Smart Contract Platform, Bitcoin Fork and Proof of Work. BSV is a native coin with its own blockchain. It is not a token issued on another network.

As of 2026-11-05, it ranked around 123rd by market capitalisation, a small fraction of the size of BTC. Treat that as a snapshot, since rankings shift often.

What BSV is used for

BSV is the native coin of its own network. Its basic role is the same as that of other Bitcoin-style coins: it pays transaction fees and moves value between addresses. The project's own description stresses very low fees, which it says make micropayments practical.

Beyond payments, supporters promote BSV as a data network. The idea is to write large amounts of information directly to the blockchain, such as records, tokens and other application data. The project materials mention enterprise use, smart contracts, computation and data storage as intended directions.

How much real-world activity exists is a separate question from what the project promotes. Promotional claims about throughput, such as tens of thousands of transactions per second, describe capacity the protocol is meant to allow, not necessarily sustained everyday usage. Anyone judging the network should look at independent on-chain activity data rather than marketing language.

There is no separate governance or utility token tied to BSV. Holding BSV is mainly exposure to the coin itself and to whatever applications are built on its chain.

Supply and tokenomics

BSV follows a Bitcoin-style issuance model with a hard cap of 21 million coins. As of 2026-11-05, about 20.11 million BSV were in circulation, and the total supply figure was almost identical. That means most of the eventual supply has already been mined, and new issuance is small.

Because the circulating supply is almost the same as the total supply, the fully diluted valuation matches the market cap at about $347.3 million. There is no large locked or unissued allocation hanging over the market in the way there is for many newer tokens.

BSV was created through a fork, so holders of Bitcoin Cash at the time received BSV balances. It did not have a venture round or a token sale in the usual sense. New coins enter circulation as block rewards to miners, and the reward is cut at periodic halving events in line with the Bitcoin schedule.

The launch date is not given in the data, though the project's history places the fork in late 2018. Supply figures are approximate and update constantly, so check a live source before relying on exact numbers.

Chains and how BSV is held and traded

BSV runs on its own blockchain, so there are no wrapped versions to worry about for ordinary use. Coins sit at addresses on that chain, and you hold them by controlling the private keys, typically through a wallet app.

Trading happens mostly on centralised exchanges. Liquidity is thin relative to larger assets. The 24-hour trading volume was about $5.8 million as of 2026-11-05, which is modest against a market cap of roughly $347 million. Thin liquidity can mean wider spreads and larger price moves on bigger orders.

Availability varies by exchange and by country. Several large platforms have dropped BSV in the past, and listings can change, so check what your chosen venue currently supports.

BSV shares a heritage with BTC and Bitcoin Cash, and addresses can look similar across these chains. Sending coins to an address on the wrong network can mean permanent loss. Always confirm the network and asset in a wallet or exchange withdrawal screen, and send a small test amount first when moving something that matters.

History and notable events

BSV's history is tied to the Bitcoin Cash split of November 2018, which came out of a dispute over protocol direction and block size between competing camps. The BSV side was strongly associated with Craig Wright and the company nChain, both of which publicly backed the project.

In 2019, several major exchanges delisted BSV amid controversy over Wright's claim to be Satoshi Nakamoto. That claim was rejected by a UK High Court ruling in 2024. The ruling did not change how the network operates, but it remains part of the project's reputation.

Price history shows the weight of that story. According to the data, BSV peaked at about $489.75 on 2021-04-16 and reached an all-time low of about $10.49 on 2026-06-25. As of 2026-11-05 it traded near $17.27, around 96% below the peak. Over the prior year it was down roughly 18%, and over seven days it was down about 1.3%.

Those figures describe the past and say nothing about the future. They are useful mainly as a reminder of how large the drawdowns have been.

Risks to consider

BSV carries several risks worth understanding before holding it.

Security. BSV uses proof of work, but its total mining power is far smaller than BTC's. Smaller proof-of-work networks are easier to attack, and chain reorganisations affecting BSV have been reported in the past.

Liquidity and listings. Volume is low relative to the market cap, and exchange support can be withdrawn, which makes exiting a position harder.

Reputation and legal overhang. The project's association with disputed claims and litigation has affected sentiment and exchange access.

Adoption versus promises. Scalability and enterprise claims are made by the project. Independent evidence of sustained heavy use should be weighed against them.

Volatility. The coin has lost most of its value from its peak and has set a new low in 2026.

This page is general information and not financial advice. It makes no price predictions, and you should only risk money you can afford to lose.

How to store BSV safely

Because BSV is a native coin, you need a wallet that explicitly supports the BSV network. Check that the wallet is actively maintained and that other holders have used it. Avoid wallets you found through unsolicited messages or ads.

For anything beyond a small amount, avoid leaving coins on an exchange long term. An exchange controls the keys, so its failure, hack or delisting can put your balance at risk. Moving funds to a wallet where you hold the keys removes that dependency, though you then become fully responsible for the security.

Write down your recovery phrase on paper and store it offline in more than one safe place. Never type it into a website, share it in a chat or store a photo of it in cloud storage. Anyone with that phrase can take your coins.

Before a large transfer, confirm the receiving address character by character and send a small test amount first. Be careful with addresses that look like BTC or Bitcoin Cash ones, since sending on the wrong network can be irreversible. Hardware wallet support for BSV can be limited, so check compatibility before buying a device for this purpose.

By the numbers

Bitcoin SV in numbers

Bitcoin SV (BSV) is ranked #122 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $342M and a price of $17.03 as of Nov 7, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($342M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.

The price was down 1.0% over 7 days, down 11.4% over 30 days, down 26.2% over the past year. It trades about 97% below its all-time high of $489.75, set on Apr 16, 2021.

About 20.11M BSV are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 21M (96% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $5.13M, or 1.5% of its market cap: low turnover, so large orders can move the price.

BSV FAQs

What is the difference between BTC and BSV?

BSV is a hard fork of Bitcoin Cash, which itself forked from Bitcoin. BSV removed the block size limit and restored some script commands, aiming for large on-chain scaling. BTC keeps a much smaller block size and has a far larger network and market value.

Is Bitcoin SV the same as Bitcoin?

No. The project says it follows Satoshi Nakamoto's original design, but Bitcoin SV is a separate blockchain with its own coin. It is also not Bitcoin Cash, although it split from it in 2018.

What is the maximum supply of BSV?

The maximum supply is 21 million BSV. As of 2026-11-05, about 20.11 million were in circulation, so most coins have already been issued.

Where can BSV be bought or traded?

BSV is traded on some centralised exchanges, but availability depends on the platform and your country, and several major exchanges have delisted it in the past. Check that your chosen exchange currently supports it and that you can legally use it where you live.

Why is the BSV price far below its all-time high?

It is not a stablecoin or a fixed-price asset, so its price moves with the market. As of 2026-11-05 it was about $17.27, well below its 2021 high of about $489.75. This is a snapshot, not a forecast.

Is BSV mined?

BSV uses the SHA-256 proof-of-work algorithm, the same one used by Bitcoin. Miners compete to add blocks and earn block rewards plus transaction fees. Its mining power is much smaller than BTC's.

What is the market cap of Bitcoin SV?

As of Nov 7, 2026, Bitcoin SV had a market cap of about $342M, ranking #122 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.

What is the all-time high of BSV?

Bitcoin SV's all-time high is $489.75, reached on Apr 16, 2021. Its all-time low is $10.49 (Jun 25, 2026). Past prices say nothing about future returns.

What is the circulating supply of BSV?

As of Nov 7, 2026, about 20.11M BSV were in circulation, against a maximum supply of 21M.
