What Virtuals Protocol and VIRTUAL are

Virtuals Protocol is a platform for creating, tokenizing and operating AI agents onchain. It launched in 2024 on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network, and aims to let people build agents for gaming, entertainment and virtual environments without needing technical skills. Agents can be multimodal, meaning they can handle text, speech and 3D animation, and they can control their own onchain wallets.

VIRTUAL is the platform's main token. Each AI agent launched through the protocol gets its own token, and VIRTUAL acts as the base asset those agent tokens are paired against. The project is run by a team led by co-founders Jansen Teng and Weekee Tiew. It grew out of PathDAO, a gaming guild formed in 2021 that shifted its focus to AI agents in January 2024.

One of the best-known agents is Luna, an AI virtual vocalist that built a large social media following. The protocol's GAME framework is the software layer that lets agents take inputs, generate responses and keep a memory of past interactions.

What the token is used for

VIRTUAL has several roles inside the ecosystem. Its main one is as the base liquidity pair and payment currency for agent activity. When someone buys an agent token, they typically trade VIRTUAL for it, and when users interact with agents, fees are paid in VIRTUAL.

Creating a new agent costs 100 VIRTUAL. New agent tokens trade on a bonding curve, a pricing formula that adjusts the price as people buy and sell. Once an agent's token reaches 42,000 VIRTUAL in the curve, it graduates to a permanent liquidity pool paired with VIRTUAL.

Holders can also stake VIRTUAL to receive veVIRTUAL, which gives a voice in DAO governance and may make them eligible for airdrops of agent tokens. Third-party descriptions also mention VIRTUAL being used for transactions in an agent marketplace, such as purchasing or licensing agent services. Newer platform features, such as an app assistant that can build and rebalance token portfolios, have been publicly announced, though how they affect token demand is not something this page can measure.

Supply and tokenomics

VIRTUAL has a fixed maximum supply of 1 billion tokens, and the total supply is also 1 billion. As of 2026-11-05, roughly 658 million were circulating, about two thirds of the total. At a price of about $0.59, that implies a market capitalization near $390 million and a fully diluted valuation near $592 million. The token ranked around 116th by market cap at that date.

The project describes a value-accrual design in which protocol revenue from agent fees funds periodic buybacks and burns of VIRTUAL. If burns occur, they reduce total supply over time. Readers should check the project's own documentation and onchain records to see how much has actually been burned, since this page cannot confirm it.

The remaining locked or unreleased tokens matter because future unlocks can add selling pressure. Allocation and vesting details are best verified from the official sources rather than from secondary summaries. The project also raised $16 million in seed funding led by DeFiance Capital and Beam, according to the project description.

Chains and how it is held and traded

VIRTUAL was first issued on Base and now exists on several networks. The data lists Ethereum, Base, Solana, Robinhood Chain and Arc as chains where it is issued. Project materials also describe expansion to Ethereum mainnet, Solana and Ronin during 2025. Because the same asset appears on multiple chains, it is important to confirm which network a token address belongs to before sending funds.

In general terms, VIRTUAL can be held in any wallet that supports the chain you use, such as a browser wallet for Base or Ethereum, or a Solana wallet for the Solana version. It trades on centralized exchanges and on decentralized exchanges, and agent tokens are usually bought through the Virtuals app by swapping VIRTUAL. Moving the token between chains requires a bridge, which adds its own fees and risks. As of 2026-11-05, 24-hour trading volume was about $34.7 million, which gives a rough sense of how actively it trades.

History and notable events

VIRTUAL's price history has been volatile. Its recorded low was about $0.0075 in January 2024, shortly after the project pivoted to AI agents. The all-time high was about $5.07, reached around the start of 2025 during a surge of interest in AI agent tokens. As of 2026-11-05, the price was about 88% below that peak and down roughly 53% over the previous year, while the seven-day change was a small decline of about 1.6%.

The protocol has also drawn attention through partnerships and initiatives. Project materials mention a 2025 partnership with Animoca Brands and a collaboration with Zyfai and BasisOS on an Agentic Fund of Funds. The token has also been associated with Binance Alpha, according to category tags, though readers should check current exchange listings directly. These events are background, not signals about future performance.

Risks to understand

VIRTUAL carries the risks common to small and mid-cap crypto assets, plus some specific to its sector. Price swings can be large, and the sharp drop from the peak shows how quickly sentiment around AI tokens can change.

Agent tokens launched on the platform are generally far riskier than VIRTUAL itself. Many may have little real usage, thin liquidity or anonymous backers, and some may fall sharply after launch. Since VIRTUAL is the pair for all of them, its value is linked to the health of that whole ecosystem.

Other risks include smart contract bugs, bridge failures on multichain transfers, governance decisions that change fees or emissions, and unlock schedules that add supply. The buyback and burn plan depends on the protocol generating enough revenue, which is not guaranteed. Regulatory treatment of tokenized agents and launchpads is also unsettled in many places. Fake tokens with similar names are common across chains, so verifying contract addresses matters. Nothing here is investment advice.

How to store it safely

Use a wallet you control, meaning you hold the private keys or seed phrase, rather than leaving large amounts on an exchange. Write the recovery phrase down offline and never share it or type it into a website. For larger holdings, a hardware wallet paired with a supported software wallet adds protection against malware.

Before you receive or swap VIRTUAL, confirm the network and the official contract address from the project's own channels, since copycat tokens exist. Send a small test transaction first. Be careful with token approvals on decentralized apps, and revoke permissions you no longer need. Be wary of unsolicited airdrops, direct messages offering support and links claiming to offer free agent tokens, as these are common scam routes.

If you stake for veVIRTUAL, read the lock terms first, as staked tokens may not be immediately withdrawable. Keep records of transactions for tax purposes, since rules vary by country.

By the numbers

Virtuals Protocol in numbers

Virtuals Protocol (VIRTUAL) is ranked #116 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $378M and a price of $0.5743 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation is $574M, so roughly 66% of the eventual supply is in circulation today; tokens still to be released could add selling pressure.

The price was down 1.8% over 7 days, down 27.7% over 30 days, down 56.3% over the past year. It trades about 89% below its all-time high of $5.07, set on Jan 1, 2025.

About 658.39M VIRTUAL are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 1B (66% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $38.7M, or 10% of its market cap: high turnover.

VIRTUAL has token contracts on 5 chains we track, including Ethereum, Robinhood Chain, Solana, Base. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.
