What Walrus and WAL are

Walrus is a decentralized data platform that is built around storing large files, often called blobs, such as datasets, media, and website assets. These are the kinds of files that are expensive to keep directly on a typical blockchain. Its stated focus is data markets for the AI era: making data trustworthy, provable, and possible to monetize.

The project describes a setting where AI agents, developers, and organizations can store data, check where it came from, and earn from it. Researchers could reach quality datasets, and companies could turn data they already hold into a revenue stream. Walrus presents itself as a developer platform, not only a place to park files.

WAL is the network's native token. It is issued on Sui, the layer-1 chain that Walrus is closely tied to, and it is not the native coin of any separate chain. Public listings group it under AI, infrastructure, storage, and Sui ecosystem tokens. At the time of writing it ranks around 320th by market capitalization.

What the token is used for

Public descriptions agree on a few core jobs for WAL. The first is payment: WAL is the currency used to pay for storage on the network, and that payment compensates the operators who store and deliver the data.

The second is staking. Storage nodes are expected to stake WAL to take part, and other holders can delegate their tokens to nodes. Rewards are distributed to participants who help keep the network running. The third is governance, where WAL holders can take part in decisions about the network.

The details of fee schedules, reward rates, and penalty rules are set by the protocol and can change, so anyone considering using the token should read the current project documentation. Demand for the token depends largely on how much people actually pay to store data on the network, which is something that can rise or fall over time.

Supply and tokenomics

The maximum supply of WAL is 5,000,000,000 tokens, and the total supply matches that figure. About 2.67 billion were circulating as of 2026-11-05, which is a little over half of the total. The remainder is not yet in circulation.

That gap matters for valuation. At the time of writing, the market cap was about $77.6 million, while the fully diluted valuation, which assumes every token is in circulation, was about $145.3 million. If the locked or unreleased tokens enter the market over time, that added supply can weigh on the price, all else being equal.

The data available here does not detail the allocation between team, investors, community, and ecosystem funds, or the unlock schedule. Readers who want those specifics should check the project's own tokenomics documentation, since vesting terms are one of the most important factors for a token of this kind.

Chains and how WAL is held and traded

WAL is issued on Sui, so it works as a Sui-based token and can be held in wallets that support that network. Walrus storage itself runs as its own network of storage nodes, with Sui used for coordination and for recording ownership of stored data.

Trading is mainly through centralized exchanges and, depending on liquidity, decentralized exchanges on Sui. CoinGecko tags it with a Binance Alpha Spotlight label, which points to some exposure on that platform. At the time of writing, 24-hour trading volume was about $3.2 million, which is modest compared with its market cap.

Because WAL lives on Sui, users need a Sui-compatible wallet and a small amount of SUI to pay network gas fees when moving or staking tokens. Always confirm you are using the correct token contract before sending funds, as copycat tokens are common.

History and price context

The data shows a launch date of null, so no firm date is given here. Even so, the price history tells a clear story. WAL reached an all-time high of about $0.759 on 2025-05-14, and an all-time low of about $0.0200 on 2026-08-14.

As of 2026-11-05 the price was around $0.029, which is roughly 86% lower than a year earlier, and about 10% lower over the previous seven days. That is a deep and sustained decline, and it came after a period of strong interest in AI and storage themes.

The project's profile has been tied to the idea that decentralized storage for AI data will draw demand. Whether usage grows enough to support the token's value is an open question, and past price moves are not a guide to what comes next.

Key risks

WAL carries the usual risks of a small-cap crypto asset, and some that are specific to its design.

  • Price volatility: A drop of more than 85% in a year shows how sharply the token can move in either direction.
  • Supply overhang: Nearly half the total supply was not yet circulating at the time of writing, so future releases may add selling pressure.
  • Adoption risk: Token demand relies on real storage usage. Competing storage networks and conventional cloud providers are strong alternatives.
  • Technical and smart-contract risk: Bugs, node failures, or problems on Sui could affect the network and stakers.
  • Staking risk: Delegating to a poorly performing node may reduce rewards, and unstaking can involve waiting periods.
  • Liquidity risk: Moderate trading volume can mean wider spreads when moving larger amounts.

This page is information, not investment advice, and nothing here predicts where the price will go.

How to store WAL safely

For small amounts, a reputable Sui wallet that you control is the simplest choice, because you hold the private keys rather than an exchange. Write down the recovery phrase on paper, keep it offline, and never share it or type it into a website or chat.

For larger holdings, consider a hardware wallet that supports Sui, which keeps keys off an internet-connected device. Check that the wallet supports WAL specifically before moving funds, and send a small test transaction first.

If you stake, use the official Walrus interfaces or a well-known wallet integration, and review the node you delegate to. Be wary of unsolicited messages offering airdrops, support, or high-yield deals, since these are common scam routes. Keep some SUI available for fees so you are never stuck unable to move your tokens.

By the numbers

Walrus in numbers

Walrus (WAL) is ranked #315 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $77.0M and a price of $0.0288 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation is $144M, so roughly 53% of the eventual supply is in circulation today; tokens still to be released could add selling pressure.

The price was down 6.6% over 7 days, down 22.1% over 30 days, down 86.5% over the past year. It trades about 96% below its all-time high of $0.7592, set on May 14, 2025.

About 2.67B WAL are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 5B (53% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $4.29M, or 5.6% of its market cap: moderate turnover.

WAL has token contracts on Sui. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

WAL FAQs

What is WAL used for?

WAL is used to pay for storage on the Walrus network, to stake with storage nodes or delegate to them, and to take part in governance. Payments compensate the operators who store and deliver data.

Which blockchain is WAL on?

WAL is issued on Sui. It is not the native coin of its own separate blockchain, so you need a Sui-compatible wallet to hold it.

What is the supply of WAL?

The maximum and total supply is 5 billion WAL. About 2.67 billion were circulating as of 2026-11-05, so a large share was still not in circulation.

How much is WAL worth now?

The price was about $0.029 as of 2026-11-05, which is far below its all-time high of about $0.759 from May 2025. Prices change constantly, so check a live source, and note this is not advice to buy or sell.

Can I stake WAL?

Yes, public descriptions say holders can delegate WAL to storage nodes and earn a share of rewards. Rates and unstaking rules are set by the protocol and can change, so check the current documentation first.

Is Walrus a storage project or an AI project?

Walrus is a decentralized storage network for large files, built with AI data and data markets in mind. WAL is its token for payments, staking, and governance.

What is the market cap of Walrus?

As of Nov 6, 2026, Walrus had a market cap of about $77.0M, ranking #315 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.

What is the all-time high of WAL?

Walrus's all-time high is $0.7592, reached on May 14, 2025. Its all-time low is $0.0200 (Aug 14, 2026). Past prices say nothing about future returns.

What is the circulating supply of WAL?

As of Nov 6, 2026, about 2.67B WAL were in circulation, against a maximum supply of 5B.

Which blockchains is WAL on?

It has token contracts on Sui.
