What Arweave is
Arweave is a blockchain-based network built to store data permanently. Its pitch is simple: a user pays once, and the network is designed to keep that data available indefinitely, without relying on a single company or server. The project describes its approach as a proof of access consensus mechanism, and its stated goal is storage that is low-cost, permanent and resistant to censorship.
The network is often described as a "permaweb", meaning websites, documents, images and application data that stay online after they are uploaded. Nodes (often called miners) store data and prove they can access it. In return they earn AR, the native token.
Arweave sits in several overlapping categories. It is a Layer 1 network with its own chain, it is classed as a storage and DePIN (decentralized physical infrastructure) project, and it is increasingly tied to AI-related use cases because of its focus on durable data. The project's own materials say it has solved decentralized data availability, but that is a marketing claim, and readers should treat it as the team's position, not a settled fact.
What AR is used for
AR has a few practical roles inside the network. The first is payment: people and apps pay in AR to upload data. The second is rewards: miners who store data and prove access to it receive AR for adding blocks and keeping data available. Public explainers also describe the token as the incentive that keeps the network replicating and serving data.
The pay-once model is the unusual part. Instead of a monthly subscription, the upfront fee is meant to fund storage for a very long time. The project describes this as an endowment-style design, where part of each fee is set aside to keep paying for storage later. How well that holds up depends on the cost of storage hardware continuing to fall and on the token retaining value, which are assumptions and not guarantees.
Apps built on top include ArDrive, a file storage app, and ao, a computing layer that runs on Arweave data. Some archives have also used the network. According to one report, the Government of Ukraine used Arweave in May 2023 to store important documents tied to the Russian invasion.
Supply and tokenomics
Arweave has a hard maximum supply of 66 million AR. As of 2026-11-05, about 65.65 million AR are in circulation, and the total supply figure matches that number. That means almost all of the cap has already been issued, and the fully diluted valuation is roughly the same as the market cap, at about $212.0M.
Because the supply is nearly fully issued, there is little scheduled new supply left to enter the market. Miner rewards from new issuance are therefore a shrinking part of the picture, and over time the network's security and storage incentives are expected to lean more on storage fees. Whether fee income can carry that load is an open question, and it depends on real demand for permanent storage.
For context on price, AR traded at about $3.23 as of 2026-11-05, ranking around 162nd by market cap. Its all-time high was about $89.24 on 2021-11-04, and its all-time low was about $0.30 on 2020-01-30. Over the prior year the price had fallen by roughly 20%. Those are historical figures, not a forecast.
Chains, holding and trading
Arweave runs its own base chain instead of living on another network. Its data structure is sometimes called a blockweave, where each new block links to the previous block and also to a randomly chosen earlier block. This pushes miners to keep old data and not only recent data. Technical write-ups also mention SPoRA, a mining approach that rewards fast access to stored data, along with networking components such as Wildfire and Blockshadows.
In practice, most people get AR in one of two ways. They buy it on a centralized exchange that lists it, or they receive it in a wallet that supports the native Arweave chain. Trading depth is modest. At the time of writing, 24-hour volume was about $7.5M, so large orders can move the price more than they would for bigger tokens.
Some wrapped versions of AR may exist on other networks, but those carry extra risks from the bridge or custodian behind them. Check exactly which asset and which network you are dealing with before you send anything, because sending to the wrong address type can lose funds permanently.
History and notable events
Arweave's mainnet launched in 2018, and it grew mainly as a storage option for NFT media, web archives and application data. The 2021 market peak pushed AR to its all-time high in early November 2021, and the price has been far lower since then, like most tokens from that cycle.
In the years after, the project broadened its story beyond storage. The ao computing layer was introduced to run programs and agents using Arweave as the data base, which ties the project to current interest in AI and DePIN. Investor lists on market data pages show backing from several well-known crypto funds, including a16z, Multicoin Capital, Coinbase Ventures and Blockchain Capital. Those listings show who has invested, and they do not show how any of that capital is used or what it implies for the token.
The Ukraine documents case from May 2023 is among the better-known examples of institutional-style use. Beyond that, readers should verify claims about partnerships and adoption directly with primary sources before relying on them.
Risks to understand
AR carries the usual crypto risks plus some specific to its design.
- Price risk: AR fell about 5% over the seven days to 2026-11-05 and roughly 20% over the year, and it sits far below its 2021 peak.
- Economic design risk: the pay-once model assumes storage costs keep falling and the token keeps enough value to fund storage over decades. If either assumption fails, long-term incentives could weaken.
- Demand risk: permanent storage is only valuable if enough people need it. Cheaper centralized and other decentralized storage options compete for the same users.
- Permanence cuts both ways: data that cannot be removed can include illegal or harmful content, which may create legal and moderation pressure on node operators and gateways.
- Liquidity risk: with daily volume in the single-digit millions of dollars, exits can be costly in stressed markets.
- Technical and bridge risk: software bugs, wrapped tokens and third-party apps each add their own failure points.
Nothing here is a recommendation to buy or sell. Anyone considering AR should size positions for the possibility of large losses.
How to store AR safely
If you hold AR, the safest basic approach is to control your own keys instead of leaving funds on an exchange for long periods. Use a wallet that explicitly supports the native Arweave chain. Browser wallets such as Wander, formerly known as ArConnect, are common for using Arweave apps. Some hardware wallets also support AR, so check the current support list before buying one.
Write down your recovery phrase or key file offline and keep copies in separate secure places. Never type it into a website, send it in a message or store it in cloud notes. Arweave wallets have historically used a key file, so back that file up as carefully as you would a seed phrase.
Send a small test transaction first, and confirm you are using the correct network and address format. Be careful with fake wallet extensions, phishing links and unsolicited airdrop claims. Keep a separate wallet with a small balance for connecting to apps, and keep your main holdings in cold storage.

AR FAQs
What is Arweave (AR)?
Arweave is a decentralized storage network where users pay once to store data that the network aims to keep available indefinitely. Miners are rewarded in AR for storing data and proving they can access it.
What is the AR token used for?
AR pays for uploading data and rewards the miners who store and serve it. It also acts as the native token for apps built on the network, such as ArDrive and ao.
What is the maximum supply of AR?
The maximum supply is 66 million AR. As of 2026-11-05, about 65.65 million were in circulation, so almost the whole cap has been issued.
Is Arweave storage really permanent?
The data is designed to be permanent, and the network funds this with an upfront fee and an endowment-style mechanism. That promise depends on assumptions such as falling storage costs and the token holding value, so it is a design goal and not a guarantee.
How does AR's price compare with its all-time high?
As of 2026-11-05, AR trades at about $3.23, far below its all-time high of about $89.24 set on 2021-11-04. Prices change constantly, and this is historical context, not a forecast.
Where can I store AR safely?
Self-custody in a wallet that supports the native Arweave chain is a common choice, with the key file and any recovery phrase backed up offline. Always check network and address format and send a small test first.
What is the market cap of Arweave?
As of Nov 6, 2026, Arweave had a market cap of about $204M, ranking #158 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.
What is the all-time high of AR?
Arweave's all-time high is $89.24, reached on Nov 4, 2021. Its all-time low is $0.2988 (Jan 30, 2020). Past prices say nothing about future returns.
