What IOTA is
IOTA is an open-source Layer 1 network that describes itself as public digital infrastructure for moving data, assets and identity onchain. It is built on a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) architecture rather than a simple chain of blocks, and it runs the Move virtual machine, so developers can write smart contracts and create digital assets directly on the network.
The project's design goals are parallel transaction processing, low fees, and application-level fee sponsorship. Sponsorship means an app can pay fees for its users, so a person does not need to hold tokens just to use a service.
IOTA has put a lot of emphasis on real-world settings, especially digital trade and supply chains. Its description mentions digitalized trade documents, digital product passports, business identity and cross-border asset flows. One flagship deployment it names is the Trade Worldwide Information Network (TWIN), which aims to give public and private parties shared, verifiable data.
The network is secured by delegated proof of stake and governed through onchain mechanisms. Be aware that many older articles describe IOTA as a feather-light "Tangle" for Internet of Things micropayments. That description reflects the project's earlier design, and the current network is a different, Move-based Layer 1.
What the token is used for
The IOTA token is the native asset of the network, and it has a few distinct jobs.
Fees. Activity on the network requires fees to be paid in IOTA, and those fees are burned rather than handed to a central party. Applications can sponsor transactions so end users do not have to deal with fees directly.
Staking and security. Because the network uses delegated proof of stake, holders can stake IOTA to back validators. Validators earn rewards for securing the network, and delegators generally share in them. Staking ties the token to network participation instead of leaving it as a pure payment coin.
Storage deposits. The project describes refundable storage deposits. Data stored onchain requires a deposit in IOTA, which can be recovered when that data is removed. The idea is to discourage unnecessary state bloat.
Participation and governance. The project says the token is used for network participation, with onchain governance aimed at long-term sustainability.
In short, IOTA works as gas, staking collateral and a deposit mechanism. How much real demand for those functions exists depends on actual network usage, which is separate from the project's stated ambitions.
Supply and tokenomics
As of 2026-11-05, about 4.72 billion IOTA were in circulation, out of a total supply of roughly 5.02 billion. No hard maximum supply is listed in the data we reviewed. The total can therefore change over time, with new issuance for validator rewards pushing it up and fee burning pulling it down.
At the time of writing, the token traded around $0.04, which put its market capitalization near $188 million and its fully diluted valuation near $200 million. That placed it around rank 177 by market cap. Daily trading volume was about $4.7 million, which is modest relative to the market cap.
Price context matters here. The all-time high was about $5.25 on 2017-12-18. The all-time low, about $0.031, was recorded on 2026-07-31, only a few months before this snapshot. Over the previous year, the price had fallen by roughly two-thirds, while the last seven days were nearly flat.
These numbers shift constantly and are provided for orientation only. They say nothing about where the price will go next. For the exact emission schedule, check the project's own documentation, since we do not state a schedule we cannot confirm.
Chains, holding and trading
IOTA is the native token of the IOTA network, the Move-based Layer 1, and also of IOTA EVM, a separate environment that supports Ethereum-style smart contracts and tooling. Data sources list the token as issued on the IOTA chain. The two environments use different address formats and wallet setups, so it is worth confirming which one you are sending to before moving funds.
The token is traded on a number of centralized exchanges, and some brokerage-style platforms and custodial wallets also support buying, holding and withdrawing it. Liquidity is concentrated in a few venues, and the volume figure above suggests that large orders may move the price more than they would for a bigger asset.
To use the token for staking, you generally hold it in a compatible wallet and delegate to a validator of your choice. Withdrawing from an exchange to a wallet requires selecting the correct network on the withdrawal screen. Sending to the wrong network, or to an address format the receiving wallet does not support, can result in lost funds.
If you hold the token on an exchange, you do not control the keys, and staking options there depend on the platform's own terms.
History and notable events
IOTA was founded in 2015, making it one of the longest-running projects in the digital asset space. It is guided by the non-profit IOTA Foundation. The token reached its all-time high of about $5.25 on 2017-12-18, during the late-2017 market peak, and it has traded far below that level since.
Its original design used a DAG called the Tangle and was aimed at machine-to-machine payments and the Internet of Things. That positioning drew a lot of attention in 2017 and 2018, and it is the framing you will find in many older explainers and beginner guides.
The project has since shifted focus. It now describes itself as a Layer 1 for smart contracts, digital assets and identity, using the Move VM, delegated proof of stake and a fee-burning model, with a strategic focus on trade and supply-chain infrastructure. Its collaborations with governments, institutions and industry partners are centered on that trade work, including the TWIN initiative.
We do not give a precise launch date for the current network here, because the data we reviewed does not state one. If a date matters to you, confirm it in the foundation's official announcements.
Risks to understand
Price and market risk. The token fell roughly two-thirds over the year to 2026-11-05, and it set an all-time low only a few months earlier. With a market cap under $200 million and modest daily volume, the price can move sharply, and exiting a larger position may be hard.
Adoption risk. The project's emphasis on trade, supply chains and digital identity depends on institutions and governments actually adopting it. Pilots and collaborations do not guarantee sustained onchain activity, and fee-burning only matters if usage is high.
Competition. Many Layer 1 networks pursue similar goals, including other Move-based chains and EVM chains with large developer communities.
Supply risk. With no listed maximum supply, ongoing issuance could dilute holders if it outpaces burning.
Technical and staking risk. Smart contracts can have bugs, and delegating to a poorly run validator can reduce rewards. Check the current unstaking rules before locking tokens.
Confusion risk. Outdated material describes the old Tangle design, and EVM and Move addresses differ. Scam sites and fake support accounts often exploit that confusion.

How to store IOTA safely
The safest setup depends on how much you hold and how you plan to use it.
Self-custody. Using a wallet that supports the IOTA network means you hold the private keys yourself. Write the recovery phrase on paper or metal, keep it offline, and never type it into a website or share it with anyone, including anyone claiming to be support staff. Check that the wallet supports the specific network you intend to use, either the Move-based IOTA network or IOTA EVM.
Hardware wallets. For larger amounts, a hardware wallet keeps keys off your internet-connected devices. Confirm current IOTA support in the wallet maker's documentation before buying.
Exchanges. Leaving tokens on an exchange is convenient, but you rely on the platform's security and solvency. Treat it as a place for trading and not long-term storage.
Before sending. Send a small test amount first, double-check the network and address, and bookmark the official sites you use. Be cautious with staking pages, airdrop claims and browser extensions, since fake versions are common.
Keep software updated and use unique passwords with two-factor authentication on any exchange account.
