What Theta Network is
Theta Network is a blockchain project that describes itself as a decentralized cloud for AI, media and entertainment. It started with a focus on peer-to-peer video delivery, where viewers share spare bandwidth and are rewarded in tokens. It has since widened its pitch to include GPU computing.
The project is usually described as having two parts. The Theta Blockchain handles payments, rewards and smart contracts, and it is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine, so developers can use familiar tools. The Theta Edge Network is a set of community-run nodes that supply computing power for video, AI, rendering and similar jobs. Theta EdgeCloud, a hybrid cloud and edge AI platform, launched on May 1, 2024.
The project's own materials make large claims about node counts and GPU capacity. Treat those as the team's statements, not independently verified figures. THETA is the network's main token, and it is listed in the Layer 1, AI and DePIN categories because the project overlaps with all three themes.
What the THETA token is used for
THETA is mainly a governance and staking token. Holders can lock it up to take part in securing the chain, either by running a validator node or a lighter guardian node, or by delegating to someone who does. Staking is how the network produces blocks and how holders take part in protocol decisions.
The network is built around two tokens. THETA handles staking and governance, while a second token, TFUEL, is used for transaction fees, smart contract execution and in-network payments and rewards. This split keeps the staking asset separate from the token that gets spent on activity.
In the video side of the project, TFUEL rewards are meant to flow to people who relay content. In the newer EdgeCloud side, the pitch is that node operators earn rewards for providing compute for AI and rendering jobs. Whether demand for those services is large enough to matter for the token is an open question that readers should judge from usage evidence, not marketing.
Supply and tokenomics
THETA has a fixed supply of 1 billion tokens. In the data used for this page, circulating supply, total supply and maximum supply are all listed at that same figure, so fully diluted value equals market cap. There is no listed schedule of future THETA unlocks in the data, but that does not mean tokens held by the team or treasury cannot move.
Theta Labs has published notes saying it unstaked some THETA from the project treasury to fund development and to help decentralize the protocol. Treasury movements like this are worth following, because large holders can affect market liquidity and perceptions of fairness.
A fixed supply does not mean the token keeps its value. The price depends on demand, and the supply cap only limits how many tokens can exist. Separately, TFUEL has its own supply and issuance rules, which are a different matter from THETA's cap. Anyone studying the economics should read both tokens' documentation, not just the THETA figures.
Chains, holding and trading
THETA is the native token of the Theta blockchain. The data for this page lists no other chains where it is issued, though wrapped or bridged versions can exist on other networks, so check any contract address carefully before interacting with it.
People hold THETA in a few general ways. Some keep it on centralized exchanges, which is convenient but means trusting the exchange. Others use the project's own wallet or other compatible wallets, where they control the keys and can stake directly or delegate to a node operator. Hardware wallet support exists in parts of the ecosystem, but check current compatibility.
Trading mostly happens on centralized exchanges. At the time of writing, as of 2026-11-05, the token traded around $0.155 with roughly $2.9M in 24-hour volume, ranking about 201st by market cap. That volume is modest, so larger orders can move the price noticeably. Wide spreads and thin order books are worth checking before any trade.
History and notable events
Theta's token launched in late 2017, according to the data used here. The project has long been associated with video streaming, and its early pitch was to cut the cost of delivering video by letting viewers share bandwidth. Its mainnet and later upgrades expanded it into smart contracts and a broader ecosystem.
THETA reached an all-time high of about $15.72 on 2021-04-16, during the broader crypto boom. Its all-time low of about $0.040 was recorded on 2020-03-12. As of 2026-11-05 the price was around $0.155, roughly 99% below the peak, and down about 62% over the previous year, with a drop of about 10% over the previous seven days.
More recently the team has moved toward AI compute with EdgeCloud, announced on May 1, 2024. Recent news items describe plans to supply AI computing to stadiums and venues for low-latency inference. Such plans are announcements, and readers should look for evidence of paying customers instead of relying on the announcements alone.
Risks to understand
The first risk is market risk. The token has fallen sharply from its peak and remains volatile, and a small market cap with modest daily volume can make prices swing hard. Nothing here is a forecast or a recommendation to buy or sell.
The second is business risk. Theta has repositioned itself over time, and the AI compute market is crowded with large cloud providers and other decentralized networks. Capacity and node figures come from the project itself, and it is hard to know how much of that capacity is used by paying customers.
Third is concentration and governance risk. A small set of validators and guardians, plus the treasury and team holdings, can have outsized influence. Fourth is technical risk, since smart contracts, bridges and wrapped tokens can fail or be exploited. Fifth is staking risk: locked tokens may not be withdrawable immediately, and delegating to a poor operator can mean lost rewards. Finally, scams that imitate Theta tokens, airdrops and wallets are common, so verify sources carefully.
How to store THETA safely
How you store THETA depends on whether you plan to stake it. Leaving tokens on an exchange is simplest, but you rely on the platform's security and withdrawal policies. For longer holding, a wallet where you control the private keys is generally safer.
Write your recovery phrase on paper or metal and keep it offline in more than one secure place. Never type it into a website, share it in chat, or photograph it. No legitimate support team will ask for it. If your wallet supports a hardware device, consider using one for larger balances, and test with a small transfer first.
THETA and TFUEL are different assets, so make sure you send the right token to the right address and network. If you stake, learn the unstaking rules and any waiting period before committing funds. Beware of fake wallet apps, phishing links and unsolicited messages offering rewards. Keep your device updated, use strong unique passwords and enable two-factor authentication on any exchange account.
