Theta is a blockchain designed around video streaming and media delivery. Instead of relying only on central servers, the network lets participants share bandwidth and computing power to deliver content, and rewards them for doing so. Validator and guardian nodes secure the chain, and it supports EVM-style smart contracts, so Ethereum-based developers can build on it with familiar tools.
Theta uses two tokens. THETA is the staking and governance token that helps secure and steer the network. Fees for transactions and smart contract calls are paid in a second token, TFUEL. Fees are generally low, but you need a little TFUEL in your wallet to do anything on the chain.
The DeFi side of Theta is small, with total value locked of about $290,000 at the time of writing. ThetaSwap is the main native DEX, a Uniswap-style market for TNT-20 tokens where liquidity providers earn trading fees. VoltSwap is a smaller community DEX shared with Meter, and Meter Passport is a bridge that its site says is paused after a reported hack. Gate, a large centralized exchange, also appears in the listings, though it runs off-chain and is not a Theta-native dApp. Liquidity is thin, so check each project carefully before using it.
