Ergo is a proof-of-work blockchain designed for programmable money and self-custody. It uses an extended UTXO model and its own contract language, ErgoScript, rather than the EVM, so applications are built differently from those on Ethereum-style chains. The protocol is also described as self-amendable, meaning it is meant to absorb upgrades through decentralized processes over time.
The native token is ERG. It pays transaction fees and rewards the miners who secure the network, and it also serves as the reserve asset in some of the chain's DeFi protocols. Fees are paid in ERG rather than a separate gas token. Because Ergo is not EVM-based, users need Ergo-specific wallets instead of the usual Ethereum ones.
The Ergo dApp scene is small but focused on core financial tools. SigmaUSD is a crypto-backed algorithmic stablecoin built with the Ergo Foundation, EMURGO and IOG. duckpools offers pool-based lending and borrowing, and ErgoPad handles token launches and staking. Rosen Bridge and anetaBTC link Ergo to chains such as Cardano and Bitcoin. DeFi TVL on Ergo was about $856,000 at the time of writing, so liquidity is limited and worth checking before you use any protocol.

Ergo FAQs
What is Ergo?
Ergo is a proof-of-work blockchain built for programmable money, with smart contracts and an emphasis on self-custody and predictable rules. Its native token is ERG, which pays transaction fees and rewards miners.
Is Ergo compatible with the EVM?
No. Ergo uses its own UTXO-based model and a contract language called ErgoScript, so it is not EVM-compatible. Ethereum-style wallets and contracts do not work on it directly. Cross-chain bridges such as Rosen Bridge are how assets move between Ergo and EVM chains.
What is the ERG token used for?
ERG is used to pay network fees and is the base asset of the ecosystem. Miners earn it for securing the chain. It is also the reserve asset behind the SigmaUSD stablecoin protocol.
Which dApps can I use on Ergo?
Our listing includes Rosen Bridge and anetaBTC for cross-chain transfers, SigmaUSD for a crypto-backed algorithmic stablecoin, duckpools for lending and borrowing, and ErgoPad for token launches and staking. Gate also appears on the page as a centralized exchange that supports multiple chains, though it is not native to Ergo.
How big is Ergo's DeFi ecosystem?
The DeFi total value locked on Ergo was about $856,000 at the time of writing, which is small next to the large smart contract chains. The figure changes daily, so check current data before relying on it.
Is using Ergo dApps risky?
Yes, DeFi carries risks on any chain, including smart contract bugs, bridge failures, thin liquidity and price swings in ERG. Smaller ecosystems can have fewer audits and less liquidity, so read each protocol's documentation and only commit funds you can afford to lose. Nothing here is financial advice.
What is the largest dApp on Ergo by TVL?
Gate is the largest dApp on Ergo by total value locked, with $5.84B across all the chains it supports. It is followed by Rosen Bridge ($919K) and Sigmausd ($382K). TVL figures come from DefiLlama and change daily.
Which dApp on Ergo has the highest DappsAtlas score?
Gate has the highest score at 7.7/10, ahead of Rosen Bridge (6.0) and Sigmausd (5.8). Scores weigh security, ease of use, fees and features, and are based only on facts we could verify.
How many dApps are on Ergo?
DappsAtlas tracks 8 dApps on Ergo. Of these, 8 have a full review and 7 report value locked, $5.85B in total, counting value on every chain they support.
