SigmaUSD Review 2026: Reserve-Backed Stablecoin on Ergo

SigmaUSD (AgeUSD) is a crypto-backed algorithmic stablecoin on the Ergo blockchain, built by the Ergo Foundation, EMURGO and IOG. It has an unusual design, but it is small and DefiLlama lists no audits.

Our verdict on Sigmausd

5.8/10

SigmaUSD suits Ergo users who want a dollar-pegged asset backed by on-chain ERG reserves instead of a centralised issuer. Its main strength is a clear design from the Ergo Foundation, EMURGO and IOG. The main caveat is size and risk: TVL is only about $419,000, DefiLlama lists no audits, and the reserve depends on one volatile asset. Read the documentation and start small.

What is Sigmausd?

SigmaUSD is a stablecoin protocol on the Ergo blockchain. DefiLlama describes it as AgeUSD, a crypto-backed algorithmic stablecoin created in partnership by the Ergo Foundation, EMURGO and IOG. It has been listed on DefiLlama since November 2022.

Public reporting describes it as a stablecoin with no intermediaries and no middlemen, and a post from the Ergo account claims it is more sound than UST, USDC and USDT. That is the project's own framing and has not been independently verified here.

The protocol is small. DefiLlama shows about $419,208 in TVL, a 13.9% drop over seven days, no listed audits and no native token. Its homepage contains only the name, so the details below rely on DefiLlama and search snippets.

How Sigmausd works

SigmaUSD, described by DefiLlama as AgeUSD, is a crypto-backed algorithmic stablecoin. A reserve of ERG sits in smart contracts on Ergo. The stable token, SigUSD, is designed to track one US dollar, and the contracts are meant to let users create or redeem it against that reserve.

In this kind of design, a second token (SigRSV, mentioned in public reporting) represents the leftover reserve value. Holders of the reserve token take on the volatility, which is meant to keep the stablecoin steady. If ERG falls sharply and the reserve ratio drops too low, the protocol limits some actions.

The exact parameters, such as ratio limits and fees, are not public. Check them in the official interface or the Ergo documentation before using it.

5 features

Key features

01

Crypto-backed stablecoin

DefiLlama classifies it as a crypto-backed algorithmic stablecoin, where the stable token is supported by on-chain reserves rather than a bank balance.

02

Native to Ergo

The protocol runs on the Ergo blockchain, which is the only chain DefiLlama lists for it.

03

Institutional founding partners

It was created in a joint partnership by the Ergo Foundation, EMURGO and IOG, according to the DefiLlama description.

04

Decentralised design

Public reporting describes it as having no intermediaries or middlemen, with the rules enforced by smart contracts.

05

Ecosystem integrations

Community guides show SigUSD being used in Ergo lending pools such as DuckPools, and the ErgoDocs page groups it with other Ergo finance projects.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Backed by a partnership of the Ergo Foundation, EMURGO and IOG, according to DefiLlama.
  • The reserve-based design avoids reliance on a bank or a central issuer.
  • Listed on DefiLlama since late 2022, so it has a multi-year record.
  • Integrated into community tools in the Ergo ecosystem, including lending pools like DuckPools.
  • No separate governance token to buy to use the protocol.

Watch out for

  • TVL is small at about $419,000 and fell 13.9% over seven days, so liquidity is thin.
  • DefiLlama lists no audits for the protocol.
  • Backing comes from a single volatile asset (ERG), so a sharp price drop can strain the reserve.
  • Ergo has a much smaller ecosystem than Ethereum, so there are fewer exchanges, integrations and tools.
  • Its homepage is minimal, so fees, parameters and current reserve ratio are not confirmed here.

Sigmausd fees

The project does not publish a fee schedule for minting or redeeming SigUSD or SigRSV. Any protocol fee would be shown in the transaction interface or in the Ergo documentation before you confirm.

Users also pay normal Ergo network fees on each transaction. Exchange spreads apply if you buy ERG or trade SigUSD on a third-party venue.

Is Sigmausd safe?

DefiLlama lists zero audits for SigmaUSD, and the project does not mention an audit report, bug bounty or past incident. That does not mean the code is unsafe, but there is no third-party review in the data to rely on.

Main risks are peg risk if ERG drops sharply, smart-contract risk, and thin liquidity at roughly $419,000 TVL. You control your own wallet keys, so a lost recovery phrase means lost funds. Public sources say nothing about regulatory status. Treat it as experimental and size positions accordingly.

6 steps

How to get started with Sigmausd

  1. 1

Read the SigmaUSD and Ergo documentation to understand how the reserve and the two tokens work.

  2. 2

Set up an Ergo-compatible wallet and keep the recovery phrase offline.

  3. 3

Buy ERG on an exchange that lists it and withdraw it to your wallet.

  4. 4

Open the SigmaUSD interface from the official site and connect your wallet.

  5. 5

Check the current reserve ratio and fees shown before confirming any transaction.

  6. 6

Start with a small amount and confirm the transaction on-chain before using larger sums.

Who Sigmausd is for

SigmaUSD is for crypto users already on Ergo, or those studying algorithmic stablecoin designs, who accept smart-contract and peg risk. It is not a good fit for anyone who needs deep liquidity, audited code or a stablecoin with a broad multi-chain presence.

Sigmausd FAQs

What is SigmaUSD?

SigmaUSD is a stablecoin protocol on Ergo. DefiLlama describes it as AgeUSD, a crypto-backed algorithmic stablecoin created in partnership by the Ergo Foundation, EMURGO and IOG.

Is SigmaUSD a real stablecoin or an algorithmic one?

It is categorised as an algorithmic stablecoin, but it is crypto-backed. In this type of design, a reserve of the base asset (ERG here) supports the stable token, and a second token absorbs price swings. Check the live reserve ratio before relying on the peg.

What are SigUSD and SigRSV?

The stablecoin ticker is SigUSD, and public reporting also mention a reserve token called SigRSV. DefiLlama lists no separate governance token for the protocol.

How much value is locked in SigmaUSD?

DefiLlama shows about $419,208 in TVL on Ergo, down 13.9% over seven days. That is small compared with major stablecoin systems.

Is SigmaUSD safe?

Not confirmed from public sources. DefiLlama lists zero audits, and any crypto-backed stablecoin carries smart-contract and peg risk. Only use money you can afford to lose and read the Ergo community documentation first.

Can I earn yield on SigUSD?

Public reporting points to community guides on earning yield on SigUSD through Ergo lending pools such as DuckPools. Those are separate protocols with their own risks, and rates are not given publicly.
