Meter Passport Review 2026: A Paused Multisig Bridge for Meter

Meter Passport is a multisig-secured bridge for the Meter ecosystem. Its homepage says transfers are paused for maintenance, and a past hack was reported by the project, so caution is warranted.

By the DappsAtlas editorial team · Updated

Our verdict on Meter Passport

3.0/10

Meter Passport suits existing Meter users who need to move assets between Meter and chains like Ethereum or BNB Chain, and who follow the project's official updates closely. Its main strength is a clear multisig design with named independent relayers. The main caveat is that the bridge is currently under maintenance with transfers unavailable, and the project itself reported a hack involving unbacked meterBNB. With no listed audits and a small amount of locked value, newcomers should hold off until the status and incident details are confirmed.

What is Meter Passport?

Meter Passport is a cross-chain bridge built for the Meter ecosystem. It connects the Meter chain with Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon, Avalanche, Moonbeam, Moonriver and Theta, and has been tracked since late 2022.

The homepage currently reads "Under Maintenance" and says bridge transfers are temporarily unavailable. No reopening date is given. A post from the project's official social account also said Passport was hacked and warned users not to trade unbacked meterBNB.

Tracked value locked is about $62,000, which is small for a bridge. The project has no token listed and no audits recorded in the tracking data.

How Meter Passport works

Passport is a lock-and-mint style bridge. When you send an asset from a supported chain, it is deposited into a contract controlled by a multisig. A wrapped version is then issued on the destination chain.

The 3-of-5 setup means three of five signers must agree before funds move. The signers are independent staking providers plus the Meter team. They use the Meter chain as a relay chain, where they validate and vote on cross-chain transfers and messages.

The main trade-off is trust. The wrapped tokens are only as good as the locked collateral and the signers who guard it. If those assets are drained, the wrapped tokens lose their backing, as the reported meterBNB incident illustrates.

Key features

01

Multichain bridging

Moves assets between Meter and chains including Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon, Avalanche, Moonbeam, Moonriver and Theta.

02

3-of-5 multisig custody

Assets deposited on connected chains are secured by a 3-of-5 multisig contract.

03

Independent relayers

Independent staking providers, including Protofire, HashQuark, Infinity Stones and Wetez, plus the Meter team act as relayers.

04

Meter relay chain

The Meter chain acts as the relay chain where relayers validate and vote on cross-chain transfers and messages.

05

MTR gas airdrop

Meter's docs say bridging funds to Meter through Passport can come with an MTR airdrop to cover gas.

06

Subsidy program

A project post describes a subsidy program meant to let assets flow between Meter, Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain at low cost.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Clear design: a multisig bridge that uses the Meter chain as its relay layer.
  • Relayers are named independent staking providers rather than a single operator.
  • Covers eight chains, giving Meter users several routes in and out.
  • The project publicly warned users about the unbacked meterBNB, which shows some incident communication.
  • Gas support through an MTR airdrop was described in Meter's docs.

Watch out for

  • Bridge transfers are shown as temporarily unavailable while the site is under maintenance.
  • The project's own social account reported a hack involving unbacked meterBNB.
  • A 3-of-5 multisig gives a small set of keys control over locked assets.
  • No audits are listed in the tracking data.
  • The 7-day TVL change of about 118% sits on a very small base of roughly $62,000.
  • Fees and the maintenance timeline are not published on the homepage.

Meter Passport fees

The project does not publish a fee schedule for Meter Passport. The bridge page is the place users would normally see any bridge fee and network gas estimate before confirming, but it is currently under maintenance.

The project has described a subsidy program meant to keep asset flows across Meter, Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain cheap, and its docs mention an MTR airdrop for gas when bridging to Meter. The terms, caps and whether either is still active are not stated.

Is Meter Passport safe?

Security rests on a 3-of-5 multisig, so compromising three signers could put locked assets at risk. The tracking data lists no audits, and the project's own social account reported a hack involving unbacked meterBNB. The amount lost and the final resolution are not public.

The homepage says transfers are paused for maintenance. Treat any bridged or wrapped asset linked to Passport as carrying counterparty and smart-contract risk, and verify the status through official channels before moving funds. Regulatory status and the team's legal structure are not published.

6 steps

How to get started with Meter Passport

  1. 1

Check the project's official channels to confirm whether bridge transfers have reopened, since the homepage shows maintenance.

  2. 2

Read the project's incident updates about the reported hack and any recovery or redemption steps.

  3. 3

Only if the bridge is open, connect a wallet on the source chain and pick the destination chain.

  4. 4

Start with a small test transfer and confirm the amount and destination address.

  5. 5

Keep some MTR or the native gas token on the destination chain, as Meter's docs describe an MTR airdrop for gas.

  6. 6

Never trade or buy bridged assets the project has flagged as unbacked.

Who Meter Passport is for

Meter chain users and holders who need a route between Meter and other networks, and who can judge bridge custody risk themselves. It is not a fit for people looking for an actively operating, audited bridge today.

Meter Passport FAQs

What is Meter Passport?

Meter Passport is a cross-chain bridge for the Meter ecosystem. It lets users move assets between Meter and other chains such as Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon and Avalanche.

Is Meter Passport working right now?

The homepage currently reads "Under Maintenance" and says bridge transfers are temporarily unavailable. It does not give a reopening date, so check the project's official channels before planning any transfer.

Was Meter Passport hacked?

Yes, a post from the project's official social account said Passport was hacked and warned users not to trade unbacked meterBNB. The project does not give the amount lost or the full recovery plan, so read the project's own incident updates.

How does Meter Passport secure funds?

Which chains does Meter Passport support?

The tracking data lists ethereum, bnb-chain, theta, moonriver, meter, avalanche, moonbeam and polygon. Availability on each route depends on the bridge being open.

Does Meter Passport have a token?

The project has no listed token of its own. Meter's docs mention an MTR airdrop for gas when bridging funds to Meter, but the terms are not public, so check the current docs.
