Anichess Review 2026: Spell-Powered Chess on Base

Anichess is a free-to-play chess game that adds magical spells to standard rules, built by Animoca Brands with Play Magnus Group. It is easy to try, but its CHECK token and staking add risk that casual players can skip.

Our verdict on Anichess

6.5/10

Anichess suits chess players who want a lighter, stranger version of the game and do not mind a crypto layer on the side. Its main strength is the familiar rule set with a spell system, backed by Animoca Brands and a Chess.com-owned partner. The main caveat is the token side: CHECK, the airdrop and the staking migration to Base come with price and contract risk, and audit and fee details are not published. Play for fun first, and stake only what you can afford to lose.

What is Anichess?

Anichess is a free-to-play chess game that adds a spell system to the classic rules. It was founded by Animoca Brands and is run in partnership with Play Magnus Group, a company owned by Chess.com. The pitch is chess with a twist: new strategic layers powered by magic, while core moves stay familiar.

The project has grown beyond a single game. It has a CHECK token, an airdrop to MOCA holders scheduled for 13 November 2025, and a move to the Base network with a new staking pool. A puzzles product reports 3 million puzzles solved and more than 150,000 unique players since July, with play recorded onchain.

The homepage could not be reviewed directly, so details such as audits, fee schedules, the full token supply, and team names are not covered here. The project does not publish them in the material reviewed.

How Anichess works

Anichess is played like chess, with the same board and pieces and moves such as castling, en passant and promotion. The difference is a spell layer: players can use magical abilities for attack, defence and tactics, and the win condition is not the same as in classic chess.

The project has a crypto layer around the game. The CHECK token sits in what is called the Checkmate ecosystem, with Anichess as its first live application. MOCA holders were scheduled to receive CHECK in an airdrop on 13 November 2025.

Anichess has moved to the Base network and asks stakers to migrate to a new pool for bonus rewards. In practice this means players who want to take part in staking connect a wallet, move tokens, and accept normal smart-contract risk. Players who only want to play can focus on the game.

6 features

Key features

01

Classic chess core

The game keeps standard moves such as castling, en passant and promotion, so existing chess players start with familiar rules.

02

Magical spell mechanic

Spells add offensive, defensive and tactical options on top of the usual pieces, changing how a game is won.

03

Free-to-play access

The game is described as free to play, so the entry barrier is registration rather than a purchase.

04

Onchain puzzles

Anichess Puzzles reports 3 million puzzles solved and more than 150,000 unique players since July, with play recorded onchain.

05

CHECK token and staking

The CHECK token was airdropped to MOCA holders in November 2025, and a staking pool offers bonus rewards after the move to Base.

06

Tournaments and events

The project has run community events, including a Spells Open tournament with ChessBase India.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Backed by Animoca Brands and tied to a Chess.com-owned partner, which gives it a visible, established sponsor.
  • Free to play, so the game can be tried without buying tokens.
  • Familiar chess rules with a spell layer make it approachable for existing chess players.
  • Reported puzzle activity of 3 million puzzles and 150,000+ unique players suggests real engagement.
  • Active community events, including a tournament with ChessBase India.

Watch out for

  • Fees, audits and team details are not published in the material reviewed, so smart-contract risk is hard to judge.
  • The CHECK token has been through an airdrop and a network migration, which adds complexity and token-price risk.
  • Migrating to a new staking pool means users must act themselves, and mistakes with approvals or links can cost funds.
  • Core rules for how spells and the changed win condition work are not fully described here, so newcomers must learn them in the game.
  • A separate Solana token named after the project exists, which can confuse buyers about which asset is official.

Anichess fees

Anichess does not publish a fee schedule in the material reviewed. The game is described as free to play, so there is no stated entry charge for casual matches.

Any cost tied to the token, such as swap fees on Base, network gas, or staking terms, would show in the wallet or staking interface at the time of the transaction. Check those details before moving funds.

Is Anichess safe?

Audit reports, custody arrangements and bug bounties are not described in the material reviewed, so smart-contract risk cannot be rated from public detail. Staking and migrating to a new pool involve contracts on Base, and users should check that they are interacting with the official interface.

Playing the game does not require holding tokens. Token holders face price volatility and the usual phishing risk around airdrops and migrations. A separate Solana token with a similar name exists, so verify the contract address from official channels before buying anything. This is a game, not a gambling product, but treat any rewards as uncertain.

6 steps

How to get started with Anichess

  1. 1

Find the official Anichess site through a trusted source, and avoid links from random social posts.

  2. 2

Create an account and try a free game to learn how the spell mechanic changes normal chess.

  3. 3

Try the puzzles to practise spells without committing funds.

  4. 4

If you want token features, set up a wallet that supports Base and keep your seed phrase offline.

  5. 5

Read the current staking pool terms before migrating or staking any CHECK, and start with a small amount.

  6. 6

Only claim airdrops or rewards from the official interface, and revoke approvals you no longer need.

Who Anichess is for

Anichess is for chess fans and casual gamers curious about a spell-based variant, and for crypto users already in the Animoca or MOCA community. It is less suited to anyone who wants a fully documented, audited DeFi product with clear fee tables.

Anichess FAQs
