Filecoin is a decentralized storage network where people rent out spare disk space and others pay to store data. Providers must repeatedly prove they still hold the files, and the network's consensus gives weight to the storage capacity a provider commits. A smart-contract layer, the Filecoin Virtual Machine, can run EVM-compatible contracts, which is what allows DeFi apps to exist on a chain built mainly for storage.
The native token is FIL. It pays storage providers, covers gas fees for transactions and contracts, and serves as collateral for providers and for some DeFi protocols. Fees are paid in FIL, so holding a small balance is needed to use any app on the chain. DeFi activity is modest: about $2.3M in DeFi TVL at the time of writing, with 23 dApps listed on this site.
The ecosystem is known for FIL staking and storage-linked finance more than for trading. GLIF offers liquid staking and on-chain credit, Parasail focuses on restaking for infrastructure projects, and USDFC lets FIL holders mint a dollar-pegged stablecoin. Smaller options include HashKing, SFT Protocol, Filet, HashMix FIL and Secured Finance Lending. Multichain names such as Uniswap V3, SushiSwap, OKX, Bitget and Gate also appear in the list, but they are not Filecoin-only.

Filecoin FAQs
What is Filecoin?
Filecoin is a decentralized storage network. Storage providers earn FIL for storing data and must regularly prove they still hold it, while users pay to store and retrieve files. Its smart-contract layer also lets developers run DeFi apps.
What is the FIL token used for?
FIL pays for storage deals and covers transaction fees on the network. Storage providers also post it as collateral, and DeFi apps on the chain use it for staking, lending and as backing for stablecoins like USDFC.
Is Filecoin EVM compatible?
Filecoin supports smart contracts through the Filecoin Virtual Machine, which can run EVM-compatible code. Developers familiar with Ethereum tools can build on it, though the base network was designed around storage rather than general trading.
What kinds of dApps are on Filecoin?
Most native apps are staking and credit protocols built around FIL, such as GLIF, Parasail, HashKing, SFT Protocol, Filet and HashMix FIL. USDFC is a FIL-backed stablecoin, and Secured Finance Lending offers fixed-rate lending. Larger DEXes such as Uniswap V3 and SushiSwap are multichain rather than Filecoin-only.
How big is DeFi on Filecoin?
DeFi on Filecoin is small. At the time of writing, DeFi TVL on the chain is about $2.3M, and several individual protocols hold under $1M. Smaller pools can mean thinner liquidity and a bigger impact from any single withdrawal or exploit.
Is FilFi still operating?
No. FilFi announced that it closed on 16 March 2026, with withdrawals staying open until March 2027. Anyone with funds there should check the project's official notices and withdraw before the deadline.
Why do big exchanges appear on this page, and what are the risks?
The exchanges listed here, including OKX, Bitget and Gate, are centralized platforms that hold your funds, and their TVL covers all supported chains, not just Filecoin. The Filecoin-native protocols are smaller and some have no listed audits. Check audits, withdrawal terms and your local rules before depositing anything.
