Our verdict on Aave V4

7.8/10

Aave V4 suits users already comfortable with DeFi who want to earn on stablecoins or borrow against crypto, and who value a well-known lending brand. Its main strength is the modular design, with distinct markets for broad collateral, isolated collateral and strategy-specific borrowing. The main caveat is that V4 is new, with less live history than earlier versions, and that liquidation and smart-contract risks apply. Fee and rate details were not published in the material reviewed, so check live markets before committing funds.

What is Aave V4?

Aave V4 is the newest version of the Aave lending protocol. DefiLlama describes it as a modular lending protocol on Ethereum with a hub-and-spoke architecture, and lists it on Ethereum, Arc, Avalanche and Base. It has been tracked since 30 March 2026 and shows roughly $808M in TVL, up 5.8% over seven days.

The Aave website presents the wider brand as the world's largest onchain lending network, citing $29.7B in net deposits, 2.5M+ users and a 2017 founding. Those figures cover Aave overall, not V4 alone. Aave Pro is described as built on Aave v4 and offers earning, borrowing and swapping.

The homepage also lists integrations and users from partners such as Kraken, MetaMask and Whop. These are the project's own claims and we have not verified them. Aave Labs states it does not control or operate any version of the protocol.

How Aave V4 works

Aave works as a pool-based lending market. Suppliers deposit tokens into smart contracts and earn interest. Borrowers lock collateral worth more than what they borrow, so loans stay overcollateralised. Parameters such as which assets are accepted are set through governance.

V4 is described by DefiLlama as modular, with a hub-and-spoke architecture. The homepage shows what that looks like in practice: separate markets for different needs. A general-purpose market accepts a wide range of collateral. A Bluechip market keeps deposited collateral from being lent out. An Ethena-correlated market lets users borrow USDe against related assets for looping.

If collateral value drops too far against the loan, the position can be liquidated to protect lenders. AAVE stakers can also provide a backstop through the Safety Module in a shortfall event, per Aave's FAQ.

Key features

01

Hub-and-spoke architecture

Aave V4 is described as a modular lending protocol with a hub-and-spoke architecture, letting markets be configured for different purposes.

02

General purpose market

A general-purpose Main market offers rates across a wide range of collateral such as AAVE, USDC, wETH, wBTC and LINK.

03

Collateral-isolated market

The Bluechip market lets users deposit assets like wETH, wstETH, wBTC and cbBTC and borrow stablecoins, with collateral not lent out to others.

04

Strategy-isolated market

A market for borrowing USDe against Ethena assets such as sUSDe and Pendle PT tokens, aimed at looping strategies.

05

Overcollateralised lending

Suppliers earn interest and borrowers post collateral worth more than the loan, following governance-approved parameters.

06

Integration stack

Aave Kit is pitched at builders who want to add lending and yield into their own apps with a few lines of code.

07

Governance and bug bounty

AAVE holders vote on proposals, and code changes go through onchain governance. A bug bounty programme is also listed.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Builds on an established lending brand that the site says has run for six years without interruption.
  • Separate market types let users choose between broad collateral, isolated collateral or strategy-specific setups.
  • Non-custodial design: supplied tokens are held in public smart contracts rather than by a company.
  • Code is public, audited per Aave, with a bug bounty and onchain governance for changes.
  • Available on four networks per DefiLlama: Ethereum, Arc, Avalanche and Base.
  • Roughly $808M TVL on DefiLlama suggests meaningful early adoption.

Watch out for

  • DefiLlama lists V4 only since 30 March 2026, so it has a much shorter live record than earlier Aave versions.
  • Overcollateralised borrowing means a falling collateral price can trigger liquidation of your position.
  • Isolated and strategy-specific markets, such as the Ethena-correlated one built for looping, carry concentrated risks.
  • Smart-contract, oracle and governance risk remain, however many audits exist; only 2 audits are listed on DefiLlama for V4.
  • Specific fee and interest rate figures for V4 markets are not published in the material reviewed, and rates change with utilisation.
  • The architecture is more complex than a single-pool lender, which takes more effort for newcomers to understand.

Aave V4 fees

Fee details for Aave V4 are not published in the material reviewed. Interest rates for suppliers and borrowers depend on each market and its utilisation, and you would see them in the live app for the market you choose.

The homepage shows a simulated 6.25% savings rate for the Aave App, which is illustrative rather than a guaranteed yield. Expect to pay network gas fees on whichever chain you use, and check any protocol or liquidation charges in the official documentation before borrowing.

Is Aave V4 safe?

Aave states its protocol contracts have been audited and formally verified by third parties, that the code is public, and that an ongoing bug bounty exists. DefiLlama lists 2 audits for V4. Changes must pass onchain governance. The website also cites a SOC 2 Type 2 annual security audit, which we could not independently confirm.

Risks remain: V4 is newly listed, so it has less live history than earlier versions, and isolated or strategy-specific markets concentrate exposure. Users hold their own keys, so mistakes with wallets or fake sites are not reversible. The site notes that no protocol can be considered risk free, and Aave Labs says it does not control or operate the protocol. Check local rules on DeFi use before depositing.

6 steps

How to get started with Aave V4

  1. 1

Read the official documentation on the hub-and-spoke design and the market types before depositing.

  2. 2

Check that using DeFi lending is legal where you live and that you are of legal age.

  3. 3

Set up a self-custody wallet and fund it with the asset you want to supply, plus a little for gas.

  4. 4

Open the official app, confirm the web address, and pick a network and market that fits your goal.

  5. 5

Start with a small deposit and note the supply rate, borrow rate and collateral rules.

  6. 6

If you borrow, keep a wide buffer against liquidation and monitor your health factor regularly.

Who Aave V4 is for

Aave V4 is for crypto holders who want to earn interest on stablecoins or other assets, or borrow against collateral without selling it. It also fits builders who want to add lending to an app. Complete beginners should start small and learn how liquidation works first.
