Our verdict on Benqi

7.6/10

Benqi suits Avalanche users who want to earn on AVAX through liquid staking or lending, or who want a cheaper route to running a validator. Its main strength is the combination of lending, sAVAX and Ignite in one place since 2021. The main caveat is the standard DeFi exposure: smart-contract bugs, liquidations, sAVAX depegs and dependence on one chain. Fees are not listed on the homepage, so check rates in the app and read the audits before depositing.

What is Benqi?

Benqi is a DeFi platform on Avalanche that combines a non-custodial lending market with liquid staking. Third-party sources say it launched in 2021 and was built by an international team of software developers. Its two core products are the BENQI Liquidity Market for lending and borrowing and BENQI Liquid Staking, which issues the sAVAX token.

Beyond those, the site promotes Ignite, which lets people run an Avalanche validator for a weekly cost starting from 8 AVAX instead of locking 2,000 AVAX, and Node Voting, where users delegate Miles to a validator and earn AVAX rewards. The QI token is the native governance asset.

Benqi has also run joint liquidity incentives with other Avalanche projects, such as KyberSwap and Yeti Finance, to deepen sAVAX markets. Its homepage links to documentation, audits, GitHub and analytics dashboards, but does not publish licensing or named team details.

How Benqi works

Benqi runs two main protocols on Avalanche. The lending market works as a pool: depositors supply assets and earn interest, while borrowers post collateral and take loans against it. One third-party description says borrowing is over-collateralized, and the homepage says interest rates are dynamic.

The liquid staking protocol takes AVAX and issues sAVAX in return. The AVAX is staked on the network, and sAVAX accrues the staking rewards, so each sAVAX becomes redeemable for more AVAX over time. Because sAVAX is a normal token, it can be used as collateral, in DEX pools or in other DeFi apps instead of sitting locked.

The QI token governs the ecosystem. According to a third-party write-up, holders vote on BENQI Improvement Proposals, and community guides describe staking QI for veQI to vote. Ignite and Node Voting add a validator-bootstrapping layer for Avalanche.

6 features

Key features

01

Lending and borrowing

Supply crypto assets to earn interest and QI rewards, or borrow against a portfolio. Rates are dynamic, based on market conditions.

02

Liquid staking with sAVAX

Stake AVAX to receive sAVAX, a yield-bearing token that stays liquid while the underlying AVAX earns Avalanche staking rewards.

03

Ignite validator access

Run an Avalanche validator starting from 8 AVAX per week, without locking the full 2,000 AVAX requirement upfront.

04

Node voting

Users can use Miles to vote for a validator and earn AVAX rewards from delegation.

05

QI governance token

QI is the native token. A third-party write-up says it is used to vote on BENQI Improvement Proposals, and veQI appears in community guides.

06

DeFi composability

sAVAX can be used as collateral, in DEX pools or across other Avalanche DeFi apps, with liquidity incentive programs run with partners such as KyberSwap and Yeti Finance in 2022.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Combines lending, borrowing and liquid staking in one Avalanche-focused platform.
  • sAVAX stays liquid and can be used as collateral or in DEX pools while earning staking rewards.
  • Non-custodial design: users keep control of assets through smart contracts.
  • Ignite lowers the AVAX needed to run a validator, with weekly pricing starting from 8 AVAX.
  • Documentation, audits, GitHub and analytics are linked from the homepage.
  • Live since 2021, giving it a multi-year operating history.

Watch out for

  • Smart-contract risk applies to the lending markets, the liquid staking contracts and the sAVAX token, as with any DeFi protocol.
  • Concentrated on Avalanche, so activity and liquidity depend heavily on one chain's health.
  • The QI token trades at a small market cap, and one third-party report flags holder concentration among its concerns.
  • The homepage does not publish specific fee figures, so the cost of borrowing or staking has to be checked in the app.
  • sAVAX carries depeg and liquidity risk when used as collateral or in DEX pools, especially in volatile markets.
  • The team is described only as an international group of developers; no named team or audit details appear on its homepage.

Benqi fees

Benqi does not publish a fee schedule on its homepage. Lending and borrowing rates are described as dynamic, so they move with supply and demand in each market. Users see current rates in the app before they supply or borrow.

Liquid staking returns come through the sAVAX exchange rate, which reflects Avalanche staking rewards. Any protocol fee on those rewards, plus Avalanche network gas fees and Ignite's weekly cost, should be checked in the app and the documentation before committing funds.

Is Benqi safe?

Benqi is non-custodial, so funds sit in smart contracts rather than with a company, which removes exchange-style custody risk but adds contract risk. The homepage says it is backed by security firms, auditors and custodians and links to an audits page, but the specific auditors and findings are not summarised in the text, so readers should read the reports directly.

Other risks include liquidation of borrowing positions, sAVAX price deviation from its underlying value, and dependence on Avalanche. One third-party rating site gives the QI token a mid-level score and flags concerns such as holder concentration. Benqi does not publish a regulatory licence. Check that the service is lawful where you live and never commit more than you can afford to lose.

6 steps

How to get started with Benqi

  1. 1

Set up an Avalanche-compatible wallet and fund it with AVAX for gas and staking.

  2. 2

Open the Benqi app from the official website and connect the wallet, checking the address carefully to avoid imitations.

  3. 3

To stake, deposit AVAX in Liquid Staking and receive sAVAX.

  4. 4

To lend, supply an asset in the lending market and review the supply rate and QI rewards shown.

  5. 5

To borrow, enable supplied assets as collateral, then borrow while keeping a safe buffer against liquidation.

  6. 6

Read the audits and documentation linked from the site, and monitor positions regularly.

Who Benqi is for

Benqi is for Avalanche users who hold AVAX and want yield without giving up liquidity, and for borrowers comfortable managing collateral ratios. It also suits people who want to support Avalanche validation through Ignite. Beginners should start small and learn how liquidation works first.

Benqi FAQs

What is Benqi?

Benqi is a DeFi platform on Avalanche. It offers lending and borrowing markets, liquid staking of AVAX via the sAVAX token, and Ignite, a service for running validators without locking 2,000 AVAX upfront. It is non-custodial, meaning users interact through smart contracts.

What is sAVAX?

Staking AVAX on Benqi returns sAVAX, a yield-bearing token that accrues Avalanche staking rewards, so its value grows against AVAX over time. It can be used as collateral, in DEX pools or elsewhere in DeFi, and can be exchanged back for AVAX plus rewards through the unstake function.

What is the QI token used for?

QI is Benqi's native token. Per a third-party write-up, it is used to vote on BENQI Improvement Proposals, and the community has described staking QI to receive veQI for voting. Lenders and borrowers can also earn QI rewards on the lending markets, according to the homepage.

How does borrowing on Benqi work?

Borrowing is over-collateralized, per one third-party description. Users supply assets as collateral and borrow against them. If collateral value falls too far relative to the debt, positions can be liquidated, so borrowers need to watch their ratios.

Is Benqi safe?

No DeFi protocol is risk-free. Benqi links to audits from its homepage, but lending and staking contracts can still have bugs, and sAVAX can trade away from its fair value. Only use funds you can afford to lose and check the audit reports yourself.

What is Benqi Ignite?

Ignite lets users run an Avalanche validator for a weekly cost starting from 8 AVAX, instead of locking 2,000 AVAX upfront, according to the homepage. Details on terms are in the documentation.
