Stellar DEX Review 2026: A Protocol-Level Exchange on Stellar

Stellar DEX is the exchange function built into the Stellar network itself, letting users trade and convert assets through Offer operations. It suits low-cost swaps and cross-currency payments more than complex trading.

Our verdict on Stellar DEX

7.2/10

Stellar DEX suits users and developers who want cheap, fast conversions and cross-currency payments on a network built for moving money. Its main strength is that exchange is native to the protocol, with offers, AMM pools and path payments at an average cost under $0.001. The caveat is that it has no official trading interface, no listed audits and modest TVL of about $14.1M, so you rely on third-party apps and on each asset's issuer.

What is Stellar DEX?

Stellar DEX is the decentralized exchange that is part of the Stellar network. It lets users trade and convert assets with the network's Offer operations. The official site is the Stellar developer portal, since the DEX is a protocol function rather than a separate app.

DefiLlama tracks it on the Stellar chain with about $14.1M in TVL, down 6.4% over the past seven days, and no token and no listed audits. The tracker has listed it since June 2025.

Its focus is payments and asset conversion. The network pairs fast settlement with very low costs and ties into ramp providers such as MoneyGram, Bitso and Ramp Network, so it fits cross-border and local-currency use cases better than speculative trading.

How Stellar DEX works

The Stellar network includes a decentralized exchange as part of its protocol. A user submits an Offer operation to buy or sell one asset for another at a chosen price, and the network matches compatible offers. Every account and asset already lives on the same ledger, so no separate exchange deployment is needed.

Since Protocol 18, the same Layer 1 DEX also supports automated market maker pools. In a pool, users deposit two assets and the pool prices trades from its balances. Path payments can route through offers and pools to convert one asset into another, so a payment can arrive in a different currency than it was sent.

Transactions finalize when each ledger closes, about every five seconds, under the Stellar Consensus Protocol. This protocol relies on trusted validators rather than mining or staking.

7 features

Key features

01

Protocol-level exchange

Trades and conversions happen through Offer operations that are part of the Stellar protocol, rather than a separately deployed exchange contract.

02

Path payments

Path payments convert assets in transit, so senders and recipients can use different currencies in one payment.

03

Built-in AMM pools

Protocol 18, launched in 2021, added automated market maker functionality to the Layer 1 DEX alongside offers.

04

Fast finality

Ledgers close in about five seconds and transactions are final when they do, which suits payments and quick swaps.

05

Very low network cost

The homepage lists an average transaction cost below $0.001, which makes small trades and conversions practical.

06

Issuer asset controls

Authorization, freeze and clawback controls are set by the issuer and follow the asset, which matters for regulated stablecoins and tokenized real-world assets.

07

Wider liquidity access

Liquidity can also be reached through other DEXs, AMMs and aggregators on Stellar and across other networks.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Built into the network protocol, so no separate exchange contract needs to be trusted
  • Settlement in about five seconds with an average transaction cost below $0.001
  • Path payments let senders and recipients use different currencies
  • Includes both an order book and AMM functionality at Layer 1
  • Connects to fiat ramps and local payment providers across many regions
  • Protocol-level uptime is listed at 99.998% over the network's lifetime

Watch out for

  • No dedicated front end: you need a third-party wallet or app to trade, and the experience varies by app
  • No audits are listed for the DEX itself, and any reviews of the protocol are not published as a single report
  • TVL of about $14.1M is modest and fell 6.4% over seven days, so liquidity in some pairs may be thin
  • Trading fees for offers and AMM pools are not stated in the sources, so costs depend on the venue and pair
  • Less tooling and fewer advanced trading features than the largest smart-contract DEX ecosystems
  • Issuer controls such as freeze and clawback on some assets are a counterparty risk for holders

Stellar DEX fees

The sources do not publish a trading fee schedule for the Stellar DEX. The homepage states an average network transaction cost below $0.001, which is the main fixed cost of placing an offer or making a swap.

Any additional fee, such as a pool fee or an app or wallet markup, is set by the specific venue or interface you use. You would see it in that app before confirming a trade. Spreads and slippage also depend on how deep the order book or pool is for the pair.

Is Stellar DEX safe?

The DEX runs as part of the Stellar protocol, so there is no separate DEX contract to audit and no custody by an exchange operator. Users keep their own keys. The tracker lists no audits for it, and the sources do not describe a bug bounty or incident history for the DEX specifically.

The main risks sit in the assets and the apps. Issuers can set authorization, freeze and clawback controls on their assets, so holders depend on the issuer. Wallets and trading front ends are separate software with their own security. Check the asset issuer, start with small amounts, and confirm the legal status of trading crypto where you live.

6 steps

How to get started with Stellar DEX

  1. 1

Choose a wallet that supports Stellar and set up an account, keeping the recovery phrase offline.

  2. 2

Fund the account with XLM to cover the network reserve and transaction costs, for example through an on-ramp.

  3. 3

Add trustlines for the assets you want to hold, since Stellar assets must be enabled on an account first.

  4. 4

Open a Stellar-compatible trading app or wallet swap feature and pick the pair to trade.

  5. 5

Review the quoted price, route and any app fee, then submit the offer or swap.

  6. 6

Check the asset issuer and its controls before holding anything beyond a short time.

Who Stellar DEX is for

It suits people who send or convert stablecoins and local-currency assets, developers building payment or ramp products on Stellar, and traders who want low-cost swaps on a fast-settling network. It is less suited to users who want advanced derivatives or the deepest liquidity across many pairs.

Stellar DEX FAQs

What is the Stellar DEX?

It is a decentralized exchange built into the Stellar protocol. Users place Offer operations to trade and convert assets directly on the network, with no separate exchange contract required. Since Protocol 18 in 2021 it has also included automated market maker functionality.

How much does it cost to trade on the Stellar DEX?

The homepage lists an average transaction cost below $0.001 and settlement of about five seconds. Any fee charged by a specific AMM pool or wallet is set by that venue, and the sources do not publish a single DEX fee schedule.

Does the Stellar DEX have its own token?

No. DefiLlama lists no token for it. The network has its own native asset, XLM, which is used for network operations, but the DEX is a protocol feature rather than a separate product with its own token.

Where do I trade on it?

Stellar publishes developer documentation at the official site, but there is no single consumer trading page there. Most users reach the DEX through Stellar-compatible wallets and trading apps that read the network order book and pools.

What are path payments?

Path payments convert one asset into another along the way, so a sender can pay in one currency while the recipient receives another. The network finds a route through available offers and pools to complete the conversion.

Is the Stellar DEX safe?

No audits are listed for it on the tracker, and it is not a standalone smart contract. It is part of the network protocol, which the homepage says has 99.998% lifetime uptime. Assets traded on it carry their own issuer risk, so check each asset before buying.
