Stellar is a layer-1 blockchain focused on payments and asset issuance, with the aim of making low-cost cross-border transfers possible. It reaches agreement through the Stellar Consensus Protocol, a federated Byzantine agreement design in which validators choose whom they trust, rather than relying on mining or a large staking set. It is not an EVM chain. Smart contracts run on Soroban, Stellar's WebAssembly-based contract platform, so apps are built specifically for the network.

The native token is XLM. It pays network fees, which are very small, and it also works as a bridge asset in the network's built-in markets. Many people use Stellar mostly for stablecoins and tokenized assets, and fees for those transfers are still paid in XLM. At the time of writing, DeFi TVL on Stellar is about $214.5M, which is modest next to the largest chains.

The ecosystem is known for payments and practical finance more than for speculative apps. Blend Pools V2 is the largest native DeFi protocol, offering isolated lending pools. Stellar DEX, Stellar AMM, Sushi Stellar, Aqua and Phoenix DeFi Hub handle swaps and liquidity. DeFindex provides stablecoin yield vaults for wallets and fintech apps, and PagCrypto connects crypto wallets to Brazilian payment rails. Multi-chain names such as Upshift, Spectra V2 and Defa by InvoiceMate add yield and real-world asset products, and exchanges like Poloniex and CEX.IO support Stellar assets.

Frequently asked questions

What is Stellar and what is it used for?

Stellar is a layer-1 blockchain built mainly for moving money and tokenized assets, such as cross-border payments and stablecoins. Its token is XLM, which pays network fees. It also supports smart contracts through Soroban, which has made room for lending, swaps and yield apps.

Is Stellar an EVM chain?

No. Stellar is not EVM-compatible. Smart contracts run on Soroban and are written for WebAssembly, commonly in Rust, so Ethereum apps need to be rebuilt for Stellar rather than copied over. Some multi-chain projects, such as Spectra V2 and Upshift, run on both Stellar and EVM chains.

What is XLM used for?

Stellar transaction fees are paid in XLM and are very small compared with many other networks. Some apps also use stablecoins for the value being moved, but the network fee itself is still paid in XLM. Individual dApps can add their own swap or service fees on top, so check each app's fee page.

Which dApps are popular on Stellar?

On this site, the Stellar-native DeFi list includes Blend Pools V2 and Blend Pools for lending, Stellar DEX, Stellar AMM, Sushi Stellar, Aqua and Phoenix DeFi Hub for swaps and liquidity, and DeFindex for stablecoin yield vaults. Upshift, Spectra V2 and Defa by InvoiceMate also support Stellar alongside other chains.

Why do some big exchanges appear on a Stellar page?

The TVL figure on a chain page can be inflated by exchanges and bridges that list Stellar among many networks. Binance, Bitget and Gate, for example, report large multi-chain totals that are not Stellar DeFi deposits. At the time of writing, Stellar's DeFi TVL is about $214.5M, and Blend Pools V2 accounts for a large share of it.

Are Stellar dApps safe to use?

Lending and yield apps carry smart contract, oracle and market risks, and stablecoin-based products can lose their peg. Blend Pools V2 has a reported 2026 oracle exploit noted in our data, which is a good reminder to read recent incident reports before depositing. Start with small amounts, understand the withdrawal terms, and never put in money you cannot afford to lose.

What is the largest dApp on Stellar by TVL?

Binance CEX is the largest dApp on Stellar by total value locked, with $127B across all the chains it supports. It is followed by Bitget ($5.93B) and Gate ($5.91B). TVL figures come from DefiLlama and change daily.

Which dApp on Stellar has the highest DappsAtlas score?

Gate has the highest score at 7.7/10, ahead of Bitget (7.6) and USDT0 (7.5). Scores weigh security, ease of use, fees and features, and are based only on facts we could verify.

How many dApps are on Stellar?

DappsAtlas tracks 50 dApps on Stellar. Of these, 50 have a full review and 25 report value locked, $145B in total, counting value on every chain they support.

What are the most common types of dApps on Stellar?

DEXes (9), Centralized Exchanges (8) and Cross Chain Bridge (5) are the largest categories on Stellar, by number of projects.

Which dApps on Stellar grew the most this week?

Among dApps with at least $1M locked, USDT0 had the biggest 7-day TVL gain (+7.4%) and CEX.IO the biggest drop (−21.2%). Combined TVL moved −5.2% over the same seven days.

What is the average score for dApps on Stellar?

The 43 rated dApps on Stellar average 6.3 out of 10. Of these, 0 score 8 or higher and 4 score below 5.
