Balanced Review 2026: Cross-Chain DeFi App and bnUSD

Balanced is a DeFi app that began as a community-run protocol on ICON and is now a privately owned, multi-chain interface for trading, earning and borrowing. It has a long record of shipping, but the shift away from community ownership is the main thing to weigh.

Good

Our verdict on Balanced

6.5/10

Balanced suits experienced DeFi users who want to borrow bnUSD, swap across chains or reach tokenised stocks from one app, and who accept that the team now controls the product. Its strengths are the wide chain coverage, intent-based trades and a long delivery record. The main caveat is that community governance is gone and the blog publishes no fees or audits, so check those details and size positions carefully, especially borrowed ones.

What is Balanced?

Balanced is a DeFi app that lets users trade, earn and borrow crypto across many blockchains. It began on ICON, where it was known for the bnUSD stablecoin, a collateral-backed token minted by borrowing against deposited assets, alongside a DEX and liquidity pools.

The project has changed a lot since then. Through 2024 and 2025 it connected to chains such as Injective, Sui, Stellar, Solana, Optimism, Avalanche, Polygon and Sonic, and it added intent-based cross-chain trades. In late 2025 it retired governance and moved from community ownership to a privately owned interface. Balanced v2 went live in April 2026 across 12 blockchains.

More recent posts describe a widget-based home page and a plan to become a design-focused DeFi aggregator. Another post says Balanced connects to Robinhood Chain and offers access to 24+ Robinhood Stock Tokens. The older Savings Rate and liquidity pool rewards were wound down in March 2026.

The team does not publish fees, audit reports or team details on its blog, so this review rests on the product updates and the recap posts.

How Balanced works

Balanced started as a protocol on ICON where users could post collateral, borrow the bnUSD stablecoin, swap assets and provide liquidity. bnUSD is a collateral-backed stablecoin. If your collateral falls too far in value, it can be liquidated to protect the system. The blog says the peg is supported by a Stability Fund, the Savings Rate, liquidations and redemptions.

Over 2024 and 2025 the team connected Balanced to other blockchains one by one, including Injective, Sui, Stellar, Solana, Optimism, Avalanche and Polygon. Users could then borrow bnUSD or trade from their own chain instead of moving assets to ICON first. In late 2024 it added intent-based trades, where a user states what they want to swap and the system arranges the cross-chain steps.

In 2025 the project pivoted from a community-owned protocol to a privately owned frontend. Governance was retired, and Balanced v2 launched in April 2026 with earning, borrowing and trading across 12 blockchains. A widget-based home page followed, and a connection to Robinhood Chain added access to tokenised stocks.

7 features

Key features

01

Cross-chain bnUSD loans

Users can borrow the bnUSD stablecoin against supported collateral on connected chains, not only on ICON. The blog mentions six collateral types at one stage of the roadmap.

02

Intent-based trading

Swaps are expressed as intents and fulfilled across chains, which the team says takes around 30 seconds. This avoids manually bridging assets before trading.

03

Balanced v2 multi-chain app

Balanced v2 brings earning, borrowing and trading into one app across 12 blockchains. It also adds a money-market design intended to be direct and easy to use.

04

Peg-keeping mechanisms

The blog describes a Stability Fund, the Savings Rate, liquidations and redemptions as the tools that keep bnUSD near its target price.

05

Widget-based Home page

A widget-based Home page was introduced, with a stated roadmap to become a design-focused DeFi aggregator.

06

Robinhood Chain access

Balanced connects to Robinhood Chain and lists access to 24+ Robinhood Stock Tokens for trading, earning and borrowing.

07

Cross-chain token support

BALN and sICX were made available across chains without wrapper tokens. Later, BALN holders were offered a migration to SODA.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Long track record: the project began on ICON and has shipped regular, documented updates through 2024, 2025 and 2026.
  • Broad chain coverage, with support for borrowing, trading and transfers across about a dozen blockchains.
  • Intent-based trades aim to make cross-chain swaps quicker, with the team citing roughly 30 seconds.
  • bnUSD comes with a documented set of peg-keeping tools: Stability Fund, Savings Rate, liquidations and redemptions.
  • The team publishes roadmaps, yearly recaps and educational posts, including a long write-up on money-market design.
  • Frank communication about the end of governance and rewards, with dated announcements.

Watch out for

  • Community governance has been retired, so users no longer have a say in the protocol and depend on the private team's decisions.
  • The legacy Savings Rate and liquidity pool rewards ended, so older yield opportunities are gone and the current return structure is less clear.
  • Fee levels, audit reports and team details are not set out on the blog, so users have to check them in the app and documentation.
  • Borrowing bnUSD against collateral carries liquidation risk, and a stablecoin peg can slip in stressed markets.
  • Spreading across 12 or more chains adds bridge and cross-chain messaging risk that a single-chain app would not have.
  • The product has changed direction several times in two years, which makes older guides and third-party write-ups unreliable.

Balanced fees

Balanced does not publish a fee schedule on its blog. Trading fees, borrowing costs and any origination or redemption charges are not stated in the posts, so they would be shown in the app and its how-to documentation before you confirm a transaction.

You should also expect network gas on each connected chain. Cross-chain trades may include solver or routing costs that the blog does not break out. Compare the quoted output of a swap with the market price before you confirm.

Is Balanced safe?

Balanced does not publish audit reports, a bug bounty or a security summary on its blog, so users should look for those in the app and documentation before depositing. Core risks are smart-contract bugs, bnUSD depegging, liquidation of borrowed positions, and the extra messaging and bridging risk that comes with a multi-chain setup.

The move from community-owned protocol to privately owned interface changes the trust model. Governance was retired and BALN holders were offered a migration to SODA, so users rely on the team rather than on token-holder votes. The blog does not describe a regulatory status or a licence for the app. Check what is available in your jurisdiction, especially for tokenised stocks. No hack or exploit is mentioned in the posts reviewed here.

6 steps

How to get started with Balanced

  1. 1

Open the official Balanced app from the link on the project's blog and check you are on the right site.

  2. 2

Read the How-to and Demo pages to learn how swaps, borrowing and the Savings Rate work in v2.

  3. 3

Connect a wallet that supports one of the connected chains, such as Solana, Sui, Stellar, Avalanche or an EVM chain.

  4. 4

Start with a small swap to see the quoted fees and how long an intent-based trade takes.

  5. 5

If you want to borrow bnUSD, read how liquidation works, choose a conservative collateral ratio and watch the position.

  6. 6

Check the forum and blog for current announcements, since rewards and token details have changed more than once.

Who Balanced is for

Balanced is for DeFi users who are comfortable with wallets, collateral ratios and liquidation risk, and who want one interface across several chains. It also suits long-time ICON and BALN holders following the project's changes. Complete beginners and anyone who wants community governance should look more carefully before using it.

Balanced FAQs

What is Balanced?

Balanced is a DeFi app for trading, earning and borrowing crypto across many blockchains. It began on ICON, where users could stake ICX, borrow bnUSD, swap assets and supply liquidity, and it now connects to about a dozen chains.

What is bnUSD?

bnUSD is Balanced's stablecoin, which users borrow against collateral. The project says its peg is supported by a Stability Fund, the Savings Rate, liquidations and redemptions.

Which blockchains does Balanced support?

The blog lists ICON, Avalanche, Injective, Sui, Stellar, Solana, Optimism, Polygon, Sonic and Robinhood Chain among the connections. Balanced v2 is described as covering 12 blockchains, and the blog does not list them all in one place.

Is Balanced still governed by BALN holders?

In late 2025 the team announced that governance was being retired and that Balanced was moving from a community-owned protocol to a privately owned interface. BALN holders were offered a migration to SODA. Check the official announcement before acting on any BALN holdings.

How do cross-chain trades work on Balanced?

Balanced announced intent-based trades, which let users swap across chains in roughly 30 seconds according to the team. You state the swap you want and the system fills it, so you do not bridge manually.

Does Balanced still pay rewards?

The blog says the legacy Savings Rate and liquidity pools would stop earning rewards in March 2026. Current earning options are in the Balanced v2 app, and the blog does not give rates, so check them there.

Is Balanced safe?

Balanced does not publish an audit list or a risk summary on its blog. Treat it as smart-contract software with liquidation, peg and cross-chain risks, and only commit funds you can afford to lose.
