Algorand is a layer-1 proof-of-stake blockchain whose native token is ALGO. It uses a Pure Proof-of-Stake design, in which the chance of being picked to propose or vote on a block depends on the amount of ALGO an account holds. Its stated aim is to offer security, decentralization and speed together, with fast block finality, so apps can run directly on the base chain. It is not EVM-based: it has its own virtual machine and smart contract tooling, so Ethereum apps need bridges to connect.

ALGO is used to pay transaction fees, to stake or take part in governance, and as the base asset in many apps. Fees are small and predictable compared with busier networks, though exact settings can change over time. At the time of writing, DeFi TVL on Algorand is about $29.5M, so it is a smaller ecosystem than the biggest smart contract chains.

The dApps on Algorand lean toward staking and real-world assets. Réti Pooling, xALGO Liquid Staking and Messina Liquid Staking cover ALGO staking, while Tinyman and Pact offer swaps and liquidity pools, and Folks Finance Lending and DorkFi handle borrowing. Lofty tokenizes U.S. rental property shares, Meld Gold offers tokenised precious metals, and Fifa Collect brings official football collectibles to the chain. Many of the large exchanges on this page, such as Binance, Bitget and Gate, are multi-chain services rather than Algorand-native apps.

Frequently asked questions

What is Algorand?

Algorand is a proof-of-stake layer-1 blockchain built for decentralized applications and payments. It uses a Pure Proof-of-Stake consensus design, and its native token is ALGO. Developers build apps directly on the base chain instead of relying on a separate scaling layer.

Is Algorand EVM-compatible?

No. Algorand has its own virtual machine, and smart contracts are usually written in languages such as Python or TypeScript that compile to its bytecode. Ethereum-style Solidity contracts do not run on Algorand natively, though some projects connect the two through bridges and cross-chain messaging.

What is the ALGO token used for?

ALGO pays transaction fees, is staked to help secure the network, and is used for on-chain governance programs. Fees on Algorand are generally very small. Fees can change with network rules, so check a current source before you transact.

How can I stake ALGO?

Réti Pooling lets ALGO holders pool stake and delegate it to validators. xALGO Liquid Staking from Folks Finance gives you a tradable token while your ALGO earns staking rewards. Messina Liquid Staking and gALGO Liquid Governance are other options. Each has its own risks, so read how it works before depositing.

Which DeFi apps are available on Algorand?

Tinyman and Pact are automated market maker DEXes on Algorand for swaps and liquidity pools. Folks Finance Lending and DorkFi handle borrowing and lending. At the time of writing, total DeFi TVL on Algorand is about $29.5M, which is modest next to the largest chains.

Does Algorand have real-world asset or NFT projects?

Yes. Lofty sells fractional shares in U.S. rental properties, and Meld Gold issues tokenised gold and silver on Algorand and XRPL. Fifa Collect, FIFA's official digital collectibles platform, also launched on Algorand. These carry issuer, custody and regulatory risks on top of normal crypto risk.

Are there gambling-style apps on Algorand, and are there age limits?

Alpha Arcade is a prediction market, and Tardly is a no-loss lottery funded by staking yield. You must be 18 or older, or 21 or older where local law requires, and you should confirm that online gambling or prediction markets are legal where you live before taking part.

What is the largest dApp on Algorand by TVL?
