Messina Liquid Staking Review 2026: mALGO on Algorand

Messina Liquid Staking lets Algorand users stake ALGO for mALGO, a liquid token that tracks governance rewards. It is a small, niche product tied to the wider Messina bridge, and its fees and audits are not clearly published.

By the DappsAtlas editorial team · Updated

Our verdict on Messina Liquid Staking

5.5/10

Messina Liquid Staking suits Algorand holders who want governance-linked rewards while keeping a liquid token they can reuse in DeFi. Its main strength is the straightforward ALGO-to-mALGO model, backed by a wider Wormhole-based bridge suite. The main caveat is transparency and scale: TVL is about $1.2 million, audits are not confirmed, and fees are not published. Start small and verify the details in the documentation first.

What is Messina Liquid Staking?

Messina Liquid Staking is the Algorand staking product from Messina.one, a project that also runs a cross-chain bridge. Users stake ALGO and receive mALGO, which accrues Algorand governance rewards while staying liquid.

The project describes itself as an omnichain toolkit built on top of Wormhole. Its roadmap covers a token bridge, an NFT bridge, liquid governance on Algorand, cross-chain swaps, public bridge liquidity pools and a future token launch with governance voting. The site footer names STRATA FORGE LTD.

The product is small. Tracked TVL is about $1.22 million, down 1.7% over seven days, and it has been listed since September 2023. No native token is live and no audits appear in the tracked data.

How Messina Liquid Staking works

You deposit ALGO into Messina's staking contracts and receive mALGO. The mALGO token represents your staked ALGO and accrues Algorand governance rewards, according to the project.

Because mALGO is a normal token on Algorand, you can hold it, trade it or deposit it into other DeFi protocols to try to earn additional yield. Messina says you can unstake at any time, which means returning mALGO to get ALGO back.

Messina is also a cross-chain project. Its bridge is built on the Wormhole messaging layer and moves assets between Algorand and several other chains, using unified liquidity pools. The liquid staking product is the Algorand-specific part of that wider suite.

6 features

Key features

01

ALGO to mALGO staking

Deposit ALGO and receive mALGO, a token that represents the staked position and accrues rewards.

02

Governance reward accrual

The staking product is aimed at Algorand governance rewards, so holders can take part without locking their tokens away.

03

Composable liquid token

Because mALGO stays liquid, it can be put to work in other Algorand DeFi protocols to try to earn extra yield.

04

Companion cross-chain bridge

Messina operates a Wormhole-based token bridge and NFT bridge that move native assets 1:1 between supported chains.

05

Account abstraction tools

The site describes smart accounts, social logins and gasless transactions through paymasters as part of its onboarding approach.

06

Destination gas airdrop

The site says Messina can detect low balances on a destination chain and airdrop the native token so a transfer is not stuck.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Liquid token (mALGO) means staked ALGO is not locked and can be used in Algorand DeFi
  • Targets Algorand governance rewards rather than a generic staking return
  • Part of a wider bridge ecosystem built on Wormhole's open-source messaging layer
  • Non-custodial and self-custodied design as described by the project
  • Live since 2023, giving it a multi-year operating history

Watch out for

  • TVL is small at about $1.22 million, so liquidity for mALGO is likely limited
  • No audits are listed in the tracked data, and the homepage does not name the auditors it refers to
  • The team behind the protocol is not named beyond a company name in the footer
  • Fees and the share of rewards taken by the protocol are not published on the homepage
  • Several roadmap items, including the token launch, public pools and swaps, are still marked as upcoming
  • Reliance on the Wormhole messaging layer adds bridge and dependency risk for the cross-chain side

Messina Liquid Staking fees

Messina does not publish a fee schedule for liquid staking on its homepage. Any protocol fee taken from staking rewards, and how mALGO's value is calculated against ALGO, would be shown on the staking page or in the documentation.

You will also pay normal Algorand network transaction fees, and any DeFi protocol where you use mALGO will have its own costs. The bridge side advertises low-cost transfers but gives no figures.

Is Messina Liquid Staking safe?

The project describes itself as simple, decentralized and self-custodied, and says its bridge relies on Wormhole's messaging layer. The homepage shows an 'Audited by' heading, but the tracked data lists no audits and the auditors are not named, so audit status should be verified in the documentation.

Risks include smart-contract bugs, depegging of mALGO from ALGO if redemption is stressed, and dependency on Wormhole for the bridge side. Small TVL can mean thin liquidity. The operating company is named only as STRATA FORGE LTD, and licensing or regulatory status is not published. A community thread shows users hitting eligibility issues with governance voting, so check how rewards and snapshots work before relying on them.

6 steps

How to get started with Messina Liquid Staking

  1. 1

Read the liquid staking page and documentation to understand how mALGO is issued and redeemed.

  2. 2

Set up an Algorand wallet that supports connecting to web apps and fund it with ALGO.

  3. 3

Connect the wallet on the Messina liquid staking page.

  4. 4

Start with a small amount of ALGO and receive mALGO in return.

  5. 5

Check how rewards show up in your mALGO balance and the redemption options.

  6. 6

Only move mALGO into other Algorand DeFi protocols after reviewing the risks of each one.

Who Messina Liquid Staking is for

This is for Algorand users who already hold ALGO, want to earn governance rewards without locking funds, and are comfortable with small, early-stage DeFi protocols. It is less suited to people who need deep liquidity, published audits or a clear fee schedule before committing capital.

Messina Liquid Staking FAQs

What is mALGO?

mALGO is the liquid token Messina issues when you stake ALGO. It represents your staked position and accrues Algorand governance rewards, while staying transferable so it can be used elsewhere in Algorand DeFi.

Can I unstake ALGO from Messina at any time?

Messina says users can unstake at any time. The homepage does not describe the mechanics, such as delays or limits, so check the in-app and documentation details before staking large amounts.

Which blockchain does Messina Liquid Staking use?

Messina Liquid Staking runs on Algorand. The wider Messina project also operates a bridge built on Wormhole that connects Algorand with chains such as Ethereum, Polygon, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Base, Optimism and BNB Chain.

Is Messina audited?

The tracked data lists no audits, and the homepage has an 'Audited by' heading without naming auditors. It also says the system is built on Wormhole's open-source messaging layer. Treat the audit status as unconfirmed until you can verify it in the documentation.

Does Messina have its own token?

The tracked data shows no token for the protocol. The homepage roadmap lists a Messina token launch and governance voting as a future phase, so a token may come later but is not live according to public information.

What does it cost to use Messina Liquid Staking?

The homepage does not publish a fee schedule for liquid staking. Users should check the staking page and documentation for any protocol fee on rewards, plus normal Algorand network fees.
