Puffer Stake Review 2026: Liquid Restaking on Ethereum

Puffer Stake is an Ethereum-native liquid restaking protocol that issues pufETH for staked ETH. It has institutional partnerships and a security-focused pitch, but it carries restaking risks and public sources list no audits.

Our verdict on Puffer Stake

7.0/10

Puffer Stake suits ETH holders who understand restaking and want pufETH exposure to staking, EigenLayer and Puffer rewards, with a team that is pushing into institutional infrastructure. Its main strength is a broad product set and named partners. The main caveat is risk: restaking adds slashing and contract exposure, DefiLlama lists no audits, TVL is modest and falling, and the UniFi Vault transition means you should read current notices before depositing.

What is Puffer Stake?

Puffer Stake is the liquid restaking arm of Puffer Finance, a protocol on Ethereum. Users stake ETH and receive pufETH, which earns Ethereum staking rewards plus EigenLayer and Puffer restaking rewards. DefiLlama lists it under Liquid Restaking since February 2024, with about $23.9 million in TVL.

Puffer has grown into a wider Ethereum infrastructure project. Its homepage lists UniFi, a based rollup, Puffer Preconf for fast confirmations, and Puffer Institutional. It also announces partnerships with Anchorage Digital for custody and Google Cloud for infrastructure, and a seed round of $5.5M is mentioned.

The homepage currently carries a notice that a new UniFi Vault is being prepared and that holders in the existing vault should withdraw. That points to ongoing change, so readers should check current product status. DefiLlama lists no audits, even though the homepage has an audited-by section, so verify audit reports in the docs.

How Puffer Stake works

Puffer takes ETH from users and stakes it on Ethereum, then gives back pufETH as a receipt. The ETH earns normal proof-of-stake rewards. Because it is also restaked through EigenLayer, it can earn extra rewards for securing additional services.

Restaking means validators accept extra duties in return for extra rewards, and also extra risk, including penalties if they misbehave. Puffer says its design uses tools such as time locks, validator bond modules and hardware-secured guardians, with the claim that several layers must fail before user funds move. These are the project's own statements and we have not verified them.

Beyond staking, Puffer builds UniFi, a based rollup, and Puffer Preconf, which gives fast transaction confirmations backed by Ethereum staking security. The liquid restaking product is the base for these other parts.

02

Secure-Signer tooling

Public reporting describes Secure-Signer, a remote signing tool backed by an Ethereum Foundation grant that uses Intel SGX to help prevent slashable offenses.

03

UniFi based rollup

The homepage describes a based rollup on Ethereum offering instant L1 withdrawals and sub-second transactions.

04

Puffer Preconf

A preconfirmation service built on EigenLayer that aims to give sub-second transaction confirmations for based rollups.

05

Institutional offering

Infrastructure for institutional Ethereum staking, with a partnership with Anchorage Digital for custody and settlement on UniFi.

06

Validator option

Users can also run a validator through Puffer, as the homepage offers a stake or run-a-validator option.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Native Ethereum liquid restaking with a liquid token, pufETH, for staked ETH
  • Institutional links, including Anchorage Digital custody and Google Cloud infrastructure, as stated by the project
  • Secure-Signer tooling backed by an Ethereum Foundation grant, per public reporting
  • A wider product set including UniFi rollup and Preconf
  • Governance through the PUFFER token and vePUFFER, with a public DAO forum

Watch out for

  • DefiLlama lists no audits for the protocol, and the homepage names auditors only through logos that are not readable in the text we have
  • Restaking adds extra risks on top of ordinary staking, including slashing and smart-contract exposure
  • TVL fell 10.7% over seven days, and the current TVL is modest for a restaking protocol
  • The homepage asks users to withdraw from the existing UniFi Vault ahead of a new one, which signals product changes in progress
  • Fees, APY and withdrawal terms are not published publicly and load dynamically on the site
  • Yield is partly tied to points and token incentives, which can change

Puffer Stake fees

Fee levels are not stated publicly. The homepage shows APY and total ETH staked as live figures that did not load in the text we have, so current yield and any protocol fee are not confirmed here.

Before staking, check the app and docs for the current APY, any protocol or performance fee, withdrawal options and Ethereum gas costs, which apply to every on-chain transaction.

Is Puffer Stake safe?

DefiLlama lists zero audits for Puffer Stake. The homepage has an audited-by section and security partners, but the names are not in the text we have, so readers should confirm audit reports in the official docs. Puffer says security is its core focus and describes layered defenses, but these are the project's own claims.

Restaking carries smart-contract, operator and slashing risk on top of ordinary staking, and pufETH can trade away from the value of the underlying ETH. The homepage asks holders in the existing UniFi Vault to withdraw, so follow the official guidance. No hack or shutdown appears. Beware of fake claim pages and phishing around the PUFFER airdrop.

6 steps

How to get started with Puffer Stake

  1. 1

Read the Puffer docs and the restaking risk explanations before depositing.

  2. 2

Confirm you are on the official website and not a copy, and beware of fake airdrop or claim pages.

  3. 3

Connect an Ethereum wallet and check the live APY and any fees in the app.

  4. 4

Stake ETH to receive pufETH, keeping some ETH for gas.

  5. 5

Review the notice about the UniFi Vault if you hold assets there, and follow the withdrawal guidance.

  6. 6

Monitor your position and the withdrawal options, and keep to an amount you can afford to lock up or lose.

Who Puffer Stake is for

Puffer Stake is for ETH holders who already understand liquid staking and are comfortable taking on restaking risk for additional rewards. It also suits users following Ethereum infrastructure and based rollups. Beginners who want the simplest staking option may prefer plain liquid staking.

Puffer Stake FAQs

What is Puffer Stake?

Puffer is an Ethereum liquid restaking protocol. Users stake ETH and receive pufETH, which earns Ethereum staking rewards plus EigenLayer and Puffer restaking rewards, according to the homepage.

What is pufETH?

pufETH is the liquid token you receive when you stake ETH on Puffer. It represents your staked position and can be held while the underlying ETH earns rewards. Before mainnet, DefiLlama says it mirrored the yield of wstETH and accumulated points.

Does Puffer have a token?

Puffer has a token called PUFFER. Public reporting mentions an airdrop claim portal and say that after claiming, holders can stake and take part in governance through vePUFFER. Check eligibility only through the official site.

Is Puffer Stake safe?

No. Restaking adds exposure to smart-contract bugs, validator and operator failures and slashing risk beyond normal staking. Puffer's own materials describe restaking as additional rewards alongside additional risks.

What other products does Puffer offer?

Besides liquid restaking, the homepage lists UniFi, a based rollup; Puffer Preconf, a preconfirmation service built on EigenLayer; and Puffer Institutional, which targets institutional staking infrastructure.

What is the UniFi Vault notice?

The homepage shows a notice that a new UniFi Vault is being prepared and asks holders in the existing vault to withdraw their assets. Read the notice on the official site before depositing in any vault.
